<P>We investigated the high-density CO adsorption phase formed on a Pt(111) surface when exposed to CO gas of pressure ranging from UHV to 100 mTorr using near-ambient-pressure (NAP)-XPS. Combined results from the NAP-XPS measurements and DFT calculations reveal the adsorption structure of CO molecules in the dense CO overlayer, which is stable under realistic conditions.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>We investigated the high-density CO adsorption phase formed on a Pt(111) surface when exposed to CO gas of pressure ranging from UHV to 100 mTorr with near-ambient-pressure (NAP)-XPS. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c4cp04318a'> </P>
Dynamic Response of Blade Surface Cavitation

In high speed turbopumps, cavitation occurs and often causes the flow instabilities such as cavitation surge and rotating cavitation. The occurrence of these cavitation instabilities is considered to relate to dynamic characteristics of the cavitation, which are modelled using a cavitation compliance and a mass flow gain factor. Various types of cavitation such as a blade surface cavitation, a tip leakage vortex cavitation, and a backflow vortex cavitation occur at the same time in the inducer and the dynamic characteristics of each cavitation have not been clarified yet in experiments. Focusing on the blade surface cavitation as one of fundamental cavitation, we investigated the dynamic characteristics of the blade surface cavitation on a flat plate hydrofoil in experiments in the present study.

<P>Catalytic CO oxidation over Pd(111) and Pd70Au30(111) surfaces was investigated by in situ spectroscopic observations to understand the alloying effect. The reaction behaviour on Pd70Au30(111) is greatly different from that on Pd(111). Pd monomer and dimer ensembles can act as active centers, whereas triangular-shaped trimers and larger ensembles are inactive.</P>
Measurement of atmospheric turbulence in a ground-to-low earth orbit optical link
Toyoshima, Morio,Kunimori, Hiroo,Jono, Takashi,Takayama, Yoshihisa,Arai, Katsuyoshi 통신위성우주산업연구회 2006 Joint Conference on Satellite Communications Vol.2006 No.-
Ground-to-satellite laser communication experiments between the optical ground station located in the Koganei ward of downtown Tokyo and the low earth orbit (LEO) satellite, Optical Inter-orbit Communications Engineering Test Satellite (OICETS), also known as "Kirari", were conducted in March and May, 2006. Optical communication links through the atmosphere are affected by the refractive index fluctuation in the atmosphere, making measurement and evaluation of atmospheric turbulence crucial issues. The Differential Image Motion Monitor (DIMM) method was used to estimate atmospheric coherence length, hence the seeing size as well, on the ground to satellite optical link. In the DIMM method, several beam spots are formed on the CCD, and the relative motions between the beam spots are calculated as the relative variance of the centers of the spots, which protects the telescope from the effects of vibrational noise and tracking error of the satellite. In contrast to stellar observation, an additional turbulence factor due to the fast movement of the telescope must be considered for ground to satellite optical links. We present the results of our measurements of atmospheric turbulence and estimate the parameters of the analytical model based on those measurements.
Sintering Properties of High-pressure Water Atomized SUS 316L Ultra Fine Powder
Toyoshima Hisataka,Kusunoki Minoru,Otsuka Isamu 한국분말야금학회 2006 한국분말야금학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2006 No.1
The MIM industry is currently focusing on parts that are used in automobiles and medical instruments. Many of the parts in these categories are very small and often not easy to machine because of its complex geometry. Therefore MIM is well suited for the production of these parts. We tested the sinterability of SUS316L ultra fine powders (3,4, 6, 8micron) produced by ATMIX high-pressure water-atomization, and it showed excellent results. A density of 97% theoretical was obtained by sintering at 1373K when using the ultra fine powder (3micron). Specifically, the finer the powder size, higher was the sintered density. The surface roughness and accuracy are also greatly improved with ATMIX ultra fine powder.

Optical communications in the presence of atmospheric turbulence are affected by the tubulence-induced optical scintillation. The optical scintillation makes the communication quality, i.e. bit error rate (BER), degrade. Because of the intrinsically narrow optical beam, the random pointing-jitter also generates additional signal fading on the communication signal. A broader optical beam could mitigate the signal fading, but would require greater transmitted power than that for the original beam to achieve the same required BER. In this paper, the average BER is derived from the probability density function (PDF) of the optical signal in the presence of atmospheric turbulence and random pointing-jitter. The joint PDF, of the lognormal PDF caused by atmospheric turbulence and the beta PDF of the random pointing-jitter, is derived by using the characteristic function of each PDF. It is shown that an optimum beam divergence of the transmitting laser beam exists, and the optimum value changes slightly with the atmospheric conditions. The beam divergence angle should be about 7 times larger than the random pointing-jitter of the optical tracking system. An example of the optimum link estimates for the tracking and communication channels are shown for a ground-to-satellite optical communication link.

SrBi2Ta2O9-Bi2SiO5 (SBT-BSO) thin lms have been prepared on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrate by pulsed laser deposition at low temperature, 300 to 450 C . We succeeded in crystallizing SBT at 350 C and P-E hysterisis loops of SBT-BSO thin lm were observed and the curve was almost the same as that of SBT. Binding state of BSO has been investigated by XPS spectra, Raman spectra and AFM. As a result it is conrmed that the binding state of BSO in ceramics is dierent from that in lms prepared by PLD. Moreover we tried to anneal SBT and SBT-BSO thin lms in high pressure O2 atmosphere, and succeeded in improve ferroelectric properties about SBT.
