Short term unsteady wind loading on a low-rise building
Sterling, M.,Baker, C.J.,Hoxey, R.P. Techno-Press 2003 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.6 No.5
This paper presents an extensive analysis of the short term, unsteady wind loading on a low-rise building. The building is located in a rural environment and only the specific situation of wind flow orthogonal to the long face of the structure is considered. The data is analysed using conventional analysis and less traditional methods such as conditional sampling and wavelet analysis. The nature of the flow field over the building is found to be highly unsteady and complex. Fluctuating pressures on the windward wall are shown to a large extent to be caused by the fluctuations in the upstream flow, whereas extreme pressures on the roof are as a result of high intensity small scale flow structures. On the roof of the building a significant amount of energy is shown to exist at frequencies above 1 Hz.
The Rising Tides of Africa and China
Sterling Johnson,Won K. Paik,Chris G. Larsen 한국외국어대학교 국제지역연구센터 2011 International Area Studies Review Vol.14 No.3
Since the mid- 1980s, Chinese security analysts have debated China’s role in the changing international system. Sharp increases in Chinese military spending indicate that China plans to reshape the international economic and military balance of power. Much of China’s economic growth is the product of its investment in Africa. Some are concerned that Beijing’s more recent relations with Africa are part of its strategy to become the new global hegemony. A primary question is: wWhich choice will China make? We analyze three perspectives on Beijing’s role in African Affairs. The first view holds that China is fulfilling a long-term strategic commitment to Africa that is driven by Chinese economic interests, a commitment to transmit and transfer its own development assistance, and a desire to build effective cooperative partnerships among developing nation-states. The second view is that Chinese policy is to quickly exploit Africa’s natural resources, without, like their Western economic counterparts, paying much consideration to local developmental, environmental concerns or human rights issues. The third view emphasizes China’s African policy as part of a long-term strategy to displace the Western orientation of the continent by forging partnerships with African elites under the rubric of solidarity.

Postpartum weight retention and depressive symptoms have a high prevalence among low income women. This qualitative study describes low-income women's experiences of weight changes and depressive symptoms during the late postpartum period. Women (n = 25) who were either overweight or had depressive symptoms, or both, at 12 months postpartum participated in an ethnically-congruent focus group. Women's experiences indicated altered personal control related to retained postpartum weight and depressive feelings. Retained weight negatively affected self-esteem and family functioning. Depression left women feeling isolated yet reluctant to seek help. These findings could provide the basis for health promotion interventions relevant to this population.

Pressure and velocity fluctuations in the atmospheric boundary layer
Sterling, M.,Baker, C.J.,Quinn, A.D.,Hoxey, R.P. Techno-Press 2005 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.8 No.1
This paper presents an analysis of wind velocity and pressure data obtained in a rural environment with a view to identifying the vortex structures present within the flow and examining the relationship between pressure and dynamic pressure. The data is analysed using both conventional analysis and conditional sampling. A method examining the eigenvalues of a matrix formed by the addition of the square of the strain tensor and the square of the vorticity tensor is also investigated. This method illustrates that there are a number of vortex structures present in the flow. The work presented in this paper suggests that the extreme events occur as a result of the superposition of two independent mechanisms.
An investigation of the wind statistics and extreme gust events at a rural site
Sterling, M.,Baker, C.J.,Richards, P.J.,Hoxey, R.P.,Quinn, A.D. Techno-Press 2006 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.9 No.3
This paper presents an analysis of wind velocity measurements obtained from four ultrasonic anemometers arranged in a vertical formation. The anemometers were located in a rural environment with a view to providing detailed information on the flow statistics of the lower part of the atmospheric boundary layer, particularly for the extreme wind events that are important in loading calculations. The data is analysed using both conventional analysis and conditional sampling. The latter is combined with wavelet analysis in order to provide a detailed analysis of the energy/frequency relationship of the extreme events. The work presented in this paper suggests that on average the extreme events occur as a result of the superposition of two independent mechanisms - large scale events that scale on the atmospheric boundary layer thickness and small scale events a few tens of metres in size.
Training Early Childhood Educators for the Future
Alice Sterling Honig 한국유아교육학회 1997 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION Vol.2 No.1
This presentation focuses on future needs and ideas for training early childhood educators. Current emphases on cognitive preparation for success in schools and on developmentally appropriate practices with young children sometimes give short shrift to the importance of new ways of conceptualizing teacher education so that those who dedicate themselves to preparing young children for the next century will be more confidently prepared to do so. Nurturing teachers are wise in the ways of young children, thoroughly conversant with child development theories and knowledge, reflective and observant of the special nature and needs of each child. Creative trainers will help teachers of the future become skilled not only at classroom organization and management, but also adept at individualizing the curriculum, depending on each child‘s personal style, gifts, and interests, as well as flexible in working with families.

Purpose: This study aimed to describe the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in Indonesian children and adolescents. Methods: This was a meta-analysis of prevalence using the Hartung-Knapp-Sidik-Jonkman method with a random effects model. A prediction interval was used to estimate true effects. We searched PubMed, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Science Direct, Google Scholar, and 3 Indonesian databases (Indonesian Scientific Journal Database, Neliti, and Indonesia One Search). We included cross-sectional or case-control studies that provided data on the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency. We excluded case reports, case series, cohort studies, or studies outside Indonesia. We computed point prevalence by dividing the number of children with hypovitaminosis D by the total number of subjects in that study. This review was registered with PROSPERO (International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews) (CRD42022329814). Results: Of 1,397 manuscripts identified, 7 were included in this review. A total of 5,870 children were included in this meta-analysis, ranging in age from 6 months to 19 years. The prevalence of hypovitaminosis D in Indonesia was calculated as 33% (95% confidence interval [CI], 9–56) and was higher in females (60% [95% CI, 58–62]) than in males (40% [95% CI, 38–42]). Mean serum vitamin D level was 22.74 ng/mL (95% CI, 16.95–30.51) with a prediction interval of 15.96 ng/mL to 29.52 ng/mL. Conclusion: Vitamin D deficiency is a public health emergency in Indonesia. Strategies to detect and treat vitamin D deficiency in Indonesian children and adolescents should be implemented immediately.
