Comparison of physicochemical pretreatments of banana peels for bioethanol production
Sócrates Palacios,Héctor A. Ruiz,Rodolfo Ramos-Gonzalez,José Martínez,Elda Segura,Miguel Aguilar,Antonio Aguilera,Georgina Michelena,Cristóbal Aguilar,Anna Ilyina 한국식품과학회 2017 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.26 No.4
Pretreatments with different concentrations of sulfuric acid (0, 0.5, and 1% v/v) and temperatures (28 and 121 C at 103 kPa in an autoclave) were performed on banana peels (BP) milled by mechanical grinding and grinding in a blender as well as without grinding. Cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, ash, and total and reducing sugar contents were evaluated. The highest yields of cellulose enzymatic hydrolysis (99%) were achieved with liquefied autoclaved BP treated with 0.5 and 1% acid after 48 h of hydrolysis. Ethanol production by Kluyveromyces marxianus fermentation was assayed using hydrolyzed BP at 10, 15, and 20% (w/w). The highest ethanol level (21 g/ L) was reached after 24 h of fermentation with 20% (w/w) BP. Kinetics of the consumption of reducing sugars under this fermentation condition demonstrates the presence of a lag period (about 8 h). Thus, BP are a good source for ethanol production.

A Mucuna pruriens protein concentrate was hydrolyzed with a digestive (pepsin–pancreatin) enzymatic system. The soluble portion of the hydrolysate was fractionated by ultrafiltration and the ultrafiltered peptide fraction (PF) with lower molecular weight was purified by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. The PF obtained were evaluated by testing the biological activity in vitro. Fractions showed that the ability to inhibit the angiotensin-converting enzyme had IC50 values that ranged from 2.7 to 6.2 μg/mL. Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity values ranged from 132.20 to 507.43 mM/mg. The inhibition of human platelet aggregation ranged from 1.59% to 11.11%, and the inhibition of cholesterol micellar solubility ranged from 0.24% to 0.47%. Hydrophobicity, size, and amino acid sequence could be factors in determining the biological activity of peptides contained in fractions. This is the first report that M. pruriens peptides act as antihypertensives, antioxidants, and inhibitors for human platelet aggregation and cholesterol micellar solubility in vitro.
Probing Quantum Confinement within Single Core–Multishell Nanowires

Theoretically core–multishell nanowires under a cross-section of hexagonal geometry should exhibit peculiar confinement effects. Using a hard X-ray nanobeam, here we show experimental evidence for carrier localization phenomena at the hexagon corners by combining synchrotron excited optical luminescence with simultaneous X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. Applied to single coaxial n-GaN/InGaN multiquantum-well/p-GaN nanowires, our experiment narrows the gap between optical microscopy and high-resolution X-ray imaging and calls for further studies on the underlying mechanisms of optoelectronic nanodevices.

Graphic Abstract
