      • The comparative study in use of Non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs effects on bone mineral density between Rheumatoid arthritis and Osteoarthritis

( Sang Yeob Lee ),( Yong Jun Kim ),( Sang Hyeon Kang ),( Dong Yeol Lee ),( Duk Song Cho ),( Kyong Han Kim ),( Won Tae Chung ),( Sung Won Lee ) 대한내과학회 2011 대한내과학회 추계학술대회 Vol.2011 No.1

The NSAIDs and celecoxib in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis had been used for a long time. However, in vitro animal model, these drugs had been reported that inhibit PGE2 and suppressed the PGE2 production by osteoblasts is involved in the mechanism of bone resorption recently. so the influence of NSAIDs and celecoxib on the patient`s actual bone density was studied. We enrolled 445 patients (Rheumatoid arthritis 256, Osteoarthritis 189), and investigated an use of NSAIDs effects on bone mineral density. All patients included in the study of the patients receiving bisphosphonate. To evaluation of bone mineral density, the Hologic QDR dual energy x ray absorptiometry was regularly performed at intervals of one year, but one-year intervals to observe changes in bone mineral density thought to be too short observation period, two-year trend of change in bone mineral density measured. The NSAIDs administered in each of the patients and the NSAIDs have adverse effects on patients were treated on behalf of celecoxib. Both patients with rheumatoid arthritis, the average steroid prednisolone 10 mg / day was in use, the NSAIDs of the 140 people, the celecoxib was used the 116 patients. The patients with osteoarthritis did not use steroids, NSAIDs was used 106 patients, celecoxib was used 83 patients. In patients with rheumatoid arthritis, the average disease duration of 8 years, the average age is 70 years old and received treatment with NSAIDs or celecoxib period was an average of 4 years, in patients with degenerative arthritis, 7.8 years, 69 years old, was 3 years. During the observation period of the average change of the T-score showed increased in both groups. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis, lumbar portion of 0.11, hip portion 0.01, and patients with degenerative arthritis, lumbar portion 0.15, hip portion 0.06, were increased. Statistically in the groups with the administration of NSAIDs or celecoxib on bone mineral density did not affect. However, The use of bisposphonate was significant (p<0.05). In conclusion, the treatment of NSAIDs or celecoxib did not affect bone mineral density in rheumatoid arthritis patients or patients with degenerative arthritis.

        Electrode-Adaptive Thin-Film Integrated Logic Circuits

Lee, Byeong Hyeon,Cho, Kyung-Sang,Sohn, Ahrum,Hwang, Sungwoo,Lee, Sang Yeol Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers 2019 IEEE transactions on electron devices Vol.66 No.2

<P>Amorphous oxide-based thin-film logic circuits have been fabricated using only an n-type amorphous silicon–zinc–tin–oxide (a-SZTO) channel layer with different source/drain electrodes. Enhancement-mode thin-film transistors (TFTs) were fabricated with oxide electrodes. Depletion-mode TFTs were fabricated with metal electrode. Work functions were measured by Kelvin probemicroscopy. The barrier heights ( <TEX>$\Phi _{\textsf {B}}$</TEX>) between the a-SZTO channel layer and the electrode were measured to be 1.831, 2.341, and 2.339 eV for the Ti/Al electrode, Indium–silicon–oxide (ISO) electrode, and indium–tin–oxide (ITO) electrode, respectively. The physicalmechanism on the variation of sheet and contact resistances was investigated using a transmission line method, and the change in the resistances is closely related to <TEX>$\Phi _{\textsf {B}}$</TEX>. Inverters were fabricated, with different <TEX>$V_{\textsf {TH}}$</TEX> values adopted simply by using different contact characteristics between various electrodes and the semiconductor channel. High values of voltage gains in inverters were obtained: 12.33 (ISO) and 11.75 (ITO) at <TEX>$V_{\textsf {DD}}= 5$</TEX> V. Itwas also confirmed that more complicated n-type-based NAND and NOR thin-film circuits, implementedwith different electrodes, functioned as conventional logic circuits. This simple fabrication method of thin-film logic circuits opens the possibility of implementing next-generation stacked integrated circuit technology.</P>

      • Metal concentrations of Chinese herbal medicine products in the United States

        Lee, Sun-Dong,Shin, Heon-Tae,Park, Hae-Mo,Ko, Seong-Gyu,Kook, Yoon-Bum,Ryu, Jin-Yeol,Kim, Hyun-Do,Hu, Howard,Park, Sung-Kyun Kyung Hee Oriental Medicine Research Center 2010 Oriental pharmacy and experimental medicine Vol.10 No.4

We determined arsenic, lead, mercury and cadmium concentrations in Chinese herbal medicines sold in the United States by medical use parts. 54 kinds of herbal products including 9 medical use parts (radix, rhizoma, cortex, pericarpium, fructus, lignum, semen, folium, and herba) were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry for arsenic, lead and cadmium, and using mercury analyzer for mercury. Arsenic (median concentration, 0.25 mg/g), mercury (0.20 mg/g), lead (3.78 mg/g) and cadmium (0.39 mg/g) were detected in 71%, 54%, 35%, and 18% of 143 herbal medicine samples, respectively. A total of 27% and 12% of 143 products analyzed contained mercury and cadmium above the regulatory standards. Herba and folium (leaves of herbal plants) were the most contaminated parts from metals, whereas pericarpium, lignum and semen (outer layers and seeds) were less contaminated. This study suggests that metal contamination is different by medical use parts. Our findings provide further evidence that efforts to protect people using traditional remedies from metal intoxication should be made to enforce the regulatory standards.

In Vivo radioprotective effect of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer and identification of active ginsenosides

        Lee, Hae June,Kim, Se Ra,Kim, Jong Choon,Kang, Chang Mo,Lee, Yun Sil,Jo, Sung Kee,Kim, Tae Hwan,Jang, Jong Sik,Nah, Seung Yeol,Kim, Sung Ho Heyden & Son 2006 Phytotherapy research Vol.20 No.5

<P>This study evaluated the effect of water extracts of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer (PG), panaxadiol (PD), panaxatriol (PT), ginsenoside Rb1, Rb2, Rc, Rd, Re and Rg1 on jejunal crypt survival, endogenous spleen colony formation and apoptosis in jejunal crypt cells in gamma-irradiated mice. Jejunal crypts were protected by pretreatment with PG, Rc and Rd. Administration of PG, PD, Rd and Re prior to irradiation resulted in an increase in the formation of endogenous spleen colonies. The frequency of radiation-induced apoptosis in intestinal crypt cells was also reduced by pretreatment with PG, PD, Rb2, Rc, Rd, Re and Rg1. In experiments on the effects of the individual ginsenosides, the rank order of activity was Rc > Rd > Rg1 > Rb2 > Re > Rb1 on intestinal crypt survival assay, Re > Rb2 > Rd > Rg1 > Rb1 > Rc on the spleen colony formation assay, and Rg1 > Re > Rd > Rc > Rb2 > Rb1 on inhibiting the death of cells caused by apoptosis. The results indicated that Rc, Rd and Re may have a major radioprotective effect in mice irradiated with high and low doses of radiation. When the same experiments were performed using PD and PT, it was observed that most of the inhibitory effects came from PD rather than PT. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.</P>

( Sung Soo Kim ),( Min Soo Kang ),( Kyu Yeol Lee ),( Myung Jin Lee ),( Lih Wang ),( Hyo Jong Kim ) 대한슬관절학회 2012 대한슬관절학회지 Vol.24 No.3

Purpose: To evaluate the treatment results of intraarticular injection according to the frequency of hyaluronic acid with mesenchymal stem cells on the osteochondral defect of rabbits` medial femoral condyles. Materials and Methods: A 5 mm diameter and 4 mm depth osteochondral defect was made on the medial femoral condyles of 18 rabbits, divided into six groups. One week after osteochondral defect, group B was injected intraarticularly with hyaluronic acid (HA), group C with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), and group D, E and F with both HA and MSCs. Group E and F received second HA injection a week after. Further, group F received third HA injection in the third week. Results: In a macroscopic evaluation, groups B (6; range, 5-8), C (6; range, 6-7), D (7; range, 6-7), E (6.5; range, 6-8) and F (7.5; range, 6-8) showed statistically significant improvements in osteochondral defect healing, compared with that of group A (4; range, 3-5) (p=0.002). In histological evaluation, groups B (11.5; range, 11-13), C (13; range, 12-18), D (16; range, 13-18), E (17.5; range, 13-20), and F (19.5; range, 12-22) showed statistically significant differences in osteochondral defect healing, compared with group A (8; range, 6-9) (p=0.006). Conclusions: The intraarticular injections of MSCs or HA can play an effective role during the healing osteochondral defects in rabbits.

Efficient Intracytoplasmic Labeling of Human Umbilical Cord Blood Mesenchymal Stromal Cells with Ferumoxides

        Lee, Jae Kwon,Lee, Man Kyoung,Jin, Hye Jin,Kim, Dal-Soo,Yang, Yoon Sun,Oh, Wonil,Yang, Sung-Eun,Park, Tae Seok,Lee, Soo Yeol,Kim, Bum-Soo,Jeun, Sin-Soo Cognizant Communication Corp. 2007 CELL TRANSPLANTATION Vol.16 No.8

<P>Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are multipotent cells found in several adult tissues; they have the capacity to differentiate into mesodermal, ectodermal, and endodermal tissues in vitro. There have been several reports that MSCs have therapeutic effects in a variety of diseases. Therefore, using a cell labeling technique, monitoring their temporal and spatial migration in vivo, would be useful in the clinical setting. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)--tracking of superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO)-labeled cells--is a noninvasive technique for determining the location and migration of transplanted cells. In the present study, we evaluated the influence and toxicity of SPIO (ferumoxides) labeling on multiple differentiated MSCs. To evaluate the influence and toxicity of ferumoxides labeling on differentiation of MSCs, a variety of concentrations of ferumoxides were used for labeling MSCs. We found that the cytoplasm of adherent cells was effectively labeled at low concentrations of ferumoxides. Compared with unlabeled controls, the ferumoxides-labeled MSCs exhibited a similar proliferation rate and apoptotic progression. The labeled MSCs differentiated into osteoblasts and adipocytes in an identical fashion as the unlabeled cells. However, chondrogenesis and neurogenesis were inhibited at high concentrations of ferumoxides. Our results suggest the effective concentration for ferumoxides use in tracking MSCs.</P>

      • Reliable Multivalued Conductance States in TaO<i>x</i> Memristors through Oxygen Plasma-Assisted Electrode Deposition with in Situ-Biased Conductance State Transmission Electron Microscopy Analysis

        Lee, Myoung-Jae,Park, Gyeong-Su,Seo, David H.,Kwon, Sung Min,Lee, Hyeon-Jun,Kim, June-Seo,Jung, MinKyung,You, Chun-Yeol,Lee, Hyangsook,Kim, Hee-Goo,Pang, Su-Been,Seo, Sunae,Hwang, Hyunsang,Park, Sung American Chemical Society 2018 ACS APPLIED MATERIALS & INTERFACES Vol.10 No.35

<P>Transition metal oxide-based memristors have widely been proposed for applications toward artificial synapses. In general, memristors have two or more electrically switchable stable resistance states that device researchers see as an analogue to the ion channels found in biological synapses. The mechanism behind resistive switching in metal oxides has been divided into electrochemical metallization models and valence change models. The stability of the resistance states in the memristor vary widely depending on: oxide material, electrode material, deposition conditions, film thickness, and programming conditions. So far, it has been extremely challenging to obtain reliable memristors with more than two stable multivalued states along with endurances greater than ∼1000 cycles for each of those states. Using an oxygen plasma-assisted sputter deposition method of noble metal electrodes, we found that the metal-oxide interface could be deposited with substantially lower interface roughness observable at the nanometer scale. This markedly improved device reliability and function, allowing for a demonstration of memristors with four completely distinct levels from ∼6 × 10-6 to ∼4 × 10-8 S that were tested up to 104 cycles per level. Furthermore through a unique in situ transmission electron microscopy study, we were able to verify a redox reaction-type model to be dominant in our samples, leading to the higher degree of electrical state controllability. For solid-state synapse applications, the improvements to electrical properties will lead to simple device structures, with an overall power and area reduction of at least 1000 times when compared to SRAM.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

Roles of Aspartate 44 in Heme Stability and Oxygen Binding of Vitreoscilla Hemoglobin

Lee, Sang-Yeol The Korean Society for Applied Biological Chemistr 2010 Applied Biological Chemistry (Appl Biol Chem) Vol.53 No.6

Vitreoscilla hemoglobin (VHb) has been known to interact with various oxygenases and supply oxygen to oxygenase reactions. To investigate the possibility to generate engineered VHb's with increased/decreased oxygen affinities, two mutant VHb's for D44 (D44E and D44K) were generated and characterized using UV-visible/FTIR spectroscopy. Oxygen affinities of wild-type and mutant VHb's were determined. These data suggest that position 44 may be a promising target for engineering oxygen affinity of VHb.
