An isolated extramedullary relapse of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in the absence of marrow involvement is a rare event. It occurs most commonly in the central nervous system or the testes, but rarely in the breast. We recently experienced ALL in a patient with an isolated extramedullary relapse in the breast after allogeneic HSCT. The patient, a 32-year-old female was diagnosed with B-cell ALL. Cytogenetic analyses were normal and the RQ-PCR testing for BCR-ABL was negative. The patient achieved a complete remission after treatment with hyper CVAD chemotherapy. Also the patient underwent an allogeneic HSCT from a HLA full matched sibling. Neither a graft versus host disease nor an infection was developed during the follow up period. One year after the allogeneic HSCT, the patient complained about a painless, palpable nodule on the left breast. The ultrasonography revealed a 2.74x2.69x2.49 cm sized lobulated hetero- echogenous mass and the PET scan showed a strong FDG uptake mass in the left breast. Histologic examination revealed an infiltration of primitive cells found showing focal TdT and CD34 positive cells. However, the short tandem repeat PCR of bone marrow aspirates showed a complete chimerism. No leukemic lesions were identified in other sites such as the bone marrow or cerebrospinal fiuid. The patient was treated with localized radiotherapy (5000cGy) followed by chemotherapy with L-asparaginase containing regimen. She patient remained in complete chimerism during radiotherapy and chemotherapy. However, an intracranial hemorrhage was developed during the chemotherapy and the patient died 2 months after the extramedullary relapse. The breast could become one of the extramedullary relapse sites of ALL in adults. Further studies on risk factors, underlying mechanisms or therapeutic strategies of an extramedullary relapse are necessary.

L-ascorbic acid 2-phosphate (Asc-2P) acts as an antioxidant and a stimulator of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) production. Previously, we reported that depletion of growth factors such as fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-2, epidermal growth factor (EGF), FGF-4 and HGF during serial passage could induce autophagy, senescence and down-regulation of stemness (proliferation via FGF-2/-4 and differentiation via HGF). In this study, we investigated the proliferation and differentiation potential of BMSCs by FGF-2 and Asc-2P. Co-treatment with FGF-2 and Asc-2P induced optimal proliferation of BMSCs and increased the accumulation rate of BMSC numbers during a 2-month culture period. Moreover, differentiation potential was maintained by co-treatment with FGF-2 and Asc-2P via HGF expression. Adipogenic differentiation potential by FGF-2 and Asc-2P was dramatically suppressed by c-Met inhibitors (SU11274). These data suggest that co-treatment with FGF-2 and Asc-2P would be beneficial in obtaining BMSCs that possess 'stemness'' during long-term culture.

To elucidate the role of the evolutionarily conserved Tyr8 residue in rice Phi-class GSTF3, this amino acid was replaced with alanine and phenylalanine by site-directed mutagenesis, respectively. The replacement of Tyr8 with Ala significantly affected the catalytic activity and the kinetic parameters, whereas the substitutions of Tyr8 with Phe had almost no effect. The Y8A mutant resulted in approximately 90-100% decrease of the specific activity. Moreover, the Y8A mutant resulted approximately in 2-fold increase of $K_m$, approximately 60-80% decrease of $k_{cat}$, and approximately 6.5-fold decrease in $k_{cat}/K_m$. From the pH/log $k_{cat}/K_m$ plot, $pK_a$ values of the GSH in the wild-type enzyme-GSH complex, Y8A-GSH complex and Y8F-GSH complex were estimated to be approximately 6.8, 8.5 and 6.9, respectively. From these results, we suggest that the evolutionarily conserved Tyr8 residue in OsGSTF3 seems to influence the structural stability of the active site of OsGSTF3 rather than directly its catalytic activity.

Psoas muscle hemorrhage from hematologic malignancies is uncommon. Here, we report a case of huge iliopsoas muscle hematoma presenting as first manifestation of chronic myeloid leukemia. The patient, a 27-year-old man was admitted due to abdominal mass on left lower abdomen and swelling of the left thigh. Computed tomography showed a splenomegaly and a 26 cm sized iso-density hematoma of the left psoas muscle. Laboratory analysis showed the following results; white cell count 481,000/mm3, hemoglobin 6.9 mg/dL, platelet count 462,000/mm3, prothrombin time 14.6 sec, activated partial thromboplastin time 35.3 sec. Bone marrow examination showed a positive BCR-ABL/t (9; 22) (q34; q11) chromosomal translocation detected by FISH and RT-PCR and he was diagnosed as chronic myeloid leukemia in the chronic phase. He received leukapheresis 3 times and started nilotinib 600 mg/day. After 10 days of supportive observation of hematoma, the patient complained weakness of the quadriceps and sensory weakness from groin to knee. We made a diagnosis of psoas muscle hematoma compressing the femoral nerve and performed an operation to remove. Postoperatively, the patient rapidly recovered from the femoral neuropathy. After 4 months, he was maintained on nilotinib with mild sensory neuropathy. In summary, psoas muscle hemorrhage from hematologic malignancies are rare, but do occur. When such lesions are discovered, clinicians should be aware of the possibility of accompanying femoral neuropathy which needs prompt surgical intervention.

Background: Age is an adverse prognostic factor in lymphoma. In general, elderly patients` medical conditionis poor and they receive subsequently reduced dosages of chemotherapy agents. Therefore, we evaluated the treatment patterns and clinical outcomes in elderly patients with lymphoma in Wonju Severance Christian Hospital (WCH). Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of elderly patients (=65 years ) who were diagnosed with lymphoma at WCH from January 2010 to December 2013. For this study, we checked the treatment medication, dosage, frequency, response and survival. Results: A total of 55 patients were identified and were followed up for a median of 7(0-43) months. The median age was 71(65-89) years and there were 27 male and 28 female. fifty three patients presented with Non-Hodgkin`s lymphoma (94.6%) and 32 of them were diffuse large B cell lymphoma. Chemotherapy was performed in 46 (83.6%) patients. Eighteen patients went through full cycles and 6 patients received the full dose of chemotherapy. However, neither the cycle nor the mean dosage of chemotherapy made significant differences on responses. The median survival of patients with chemotherapy seemed to be longer than that of those with conservative care only, but it was not statistically significant (8 (0-43) months vs. 1.5 months (0- 40 months), p=0.281). Neither chemotherapy cycle, dosages, stage, LDH nor a bulky disease made any difference regarding survival, but a poor performance, the presence of an extranodal disease and T cell histology showed poor survival. Conclusion: Chemotherapy seemed to improve the survival in elderly lymphoma patients, but without clinical significance. However, this study included only 55 patients with heterogenous histology. Therefore, further prospectivetrials with a larger number of patients and a longer monitoring period are warranted to determine the best treatment strategy in elderly lymphoma patients.
E-H Mode Transition Properties of Cylindrical ICP Hg:Kr
Yang Jong-Kyung,Pack Kwang-Hyun,Lee Jong-Chan,Park Dae-Hee The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers 2005 KIEE International Transactions on Electrophysics Vol.5C No.3
In this paper, we designed a cylindrical type light source having an electromagnetic principle of inductively coupled plasma, and measured its electrical-optical properties. Using the transformer principle, an electrically equivalent circuit cylindrical type light source was analyzed. According to the parameters of electromagnetic induction, which were diameter of coil with cpO.3$\~$ 1.2mm, number of turns with 4$\~$ 12 turns, distance with 40$\~$ l20mm and RF power with 10$\~$ 150W, the electrical .md optical properties were measured. When the diameter of the coil was cp0.3mm, number of turns was 8 and distance was 40mm, and the maximum brightness of 29,730 cd/m$^{2}$ was shown with RF power l50W. The relationship between electromagnetic induction and plasma discharges was demonstrated using the mode transition from E-mode to H-mode
Ammonia-based plasma treatment of single-walled carbon nanotube thin films for bio-immobilization
Lee, Jaemin,Efremov, Alexander,Son, Ryeo Gang,Pack, Seung Pil,Lee, Hyun Woo,Kim, Kwangsoo,Kwon, Kwang-Ho Elsevier 2016 Carbon Vol.105 No.-

The bio-immobilization efficiency of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) thin films treated in NH3/Ar/N-2 inductively coupled plasmas with different Ar/N-2 gas mixing ratios was studied. The plasma parameters as well as the densities and fluxes of the plasma active species were controlled using both plasma diagnostics (Langmuir probes, optical emission spectroscopy) and modeling. The surface morphology of the SWCNT thin films was observed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The structural changes on the treated surfaces were detected by Raman spectroscopy. The changes in atomic composition for plasma-treated and pristine SWCNT film surfaces were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Fluorescence analysis of the plasma-functionalized SWCNT surfaces was performed with green fluorescent proteins (GFPs). It was found that the transition from NH3/Ar to NH3/N-2 gas system at other constant processing conditions resulted in increasing the CNT surface roughness, the degree of structural defects, the number of NH2-functional groups connected to the CNT surface and the bio-immobilization capability. It was proposed that all these effects are connected to the chemical etching and modification of SWCNTs due to the increased flux of NHx (x < 3) species. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd.
