Nuclear power plants in Korea stores approximately 3,800 drums of paraffin solidification products. Due to the lack of homogeneity, these solidification products are not allowed to be disposed of. There is therefore a need for the separation of paraffin from the solidification products. This work developed an equipment for a selective separation of paraffin from the solidification product using the vacuum evaporation and condensational recovery method in a closed system. The equipment mainly consists of a vacuum evaporator and a condensational deposition recovery chamber. Nonisothermal vacuum TGAs, kinetic analyses and kinetic predictions were conducted to set appropriate operation conditions. Its basic operability under the established conditions was first confirmed using pure paraffin solid. Simulated paraffin solidification product fixing dried boric acid waste including nonradioactive Co and Cs were then fabricated and tested for the capability of selective separation of paraffin from the simulated waste. Paraffin was selectively separated without entertainment of Co and Cs. It was confirmed that the developed equipment could separate and recover paraffin in the form of nonradioactive waste.
300V DC Feed System for Internet Data Center
Du-Hwan Kim,Taesik Yu,Hyosung Kim,Hyungsoo Mok,Kyung-Seok Park 전력전자학회 2011 ICPE(ISPE)논문집 Vol.2011 No.5
Internet Data Centers (IDC), as essential facilities for modern IT industry, typically have scores of ㎿ of concentrated electric loads. Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) are necessary for the power feed system of IDCs because of stable power requirement. Thus, conventional AC power feed systems of IDCs have three cascaded power conversion stages such as (AC-DC), (DCAC), and (AC-DC), which results in very low conversion efficiency. On the contrary, DC power feed systems need just a single power conversion stage (AC-DC) supplying AC mains power to DC server loads, which gives comparatively high conversion efficiency and reliability [5]. This paper compares the efficiencies between 220V AC power feed system and 300V DC power feed system on equal load conditions which were established in Mok-Dong IDC of Korea Telecom Co. Ltd. (KT). Experimental results show that the total operation efficiency of the 300V DC power feed system is around 15% higher than that of the 220V AC power feed system.

An isolate of Odontoglossum ringspot virus (ORSV) was identified from Cymbidium var. 'Grace Kelly' showing ringspot symptom on the floral and leaf parts, and was denoted as cymbidium ringspot isolate (ORSV-CR). In ultrathin sections of leaf tissue from diseased Cymbidium plants, clusters of virus particles were observed in the vacuole and cytoplasm. In the Western blot hybridization, the virus strongly reacted with ORSV-specific antiserum indistinguishable from ORSV, suggesting that the vims is serologically identical with ORSV. ORSV-CR sap was inoculated onto 20 species belonging to 12 genera. Systemic infection occurred in Cymbidium sp., Nicotiana benthamiana and N. clevelandii, the host of which was found to be different from that of ORSV-Cy, the Korean strain of ORSV. The analysis of coat protein (CP) gene showed that ORSV-CR was highly homologous to the known isolates of ORSV, with over 95.6% identity in amino acid level. Phylogenetic tree analysis of CP showed that ORSV-CR was clustered with the known ORSV isolates, suggesting that ORSV is a very stable tobamovirus.
First Report of Zucchini yellow mosaic virus on Hollyhock (Althaea rosea)
Park, Won-Mok,Park, Seung-Kook,Yoon, Ju-Yeon,Ryu, Ki-Hyun,Park, Jang-Kyung The Korean Society of Plant Pathology 2002 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.18 No.3
This study was conducted to determine the causal virus that naturally infected hollyhock (Althaea rosea) plant showing mild mosaic symptom in 1999. Flexuous virus particles were found in the cytoplasm of plant tissue from infected hollyhock under transmissible electron microscopy. A virus from the genus Potyvirus under the family Potyviridae was isolated and was maintained on Chenopodium quinoa for three passages. Chlorotic local legions were used to inoculate 20 species of indicator plants. The virus infected all the tested cucurbit plants, but failed to infect Nicotiana benthamiana. Based on the host range test and RT-PCR analysis, the potyvirus was identified as a strain of Zucchini yellow mosaic virus-A (ZYMV-A), one of the major pathogens of cucurbits. Infectivity analysis showed that ZYMV-A induced faster systemic symptom than ZYMV-Cu on squash and other cucurbit plants, suggesting that ZYMV-A was a more severe strain. To better characterize ZYMV-A, Western blot assay was carried rout to the coat protein (CP) of the virus using ZYMV-specific antiserum with ZYMV-Cu and other potyviruses. The CP of the virus reacted strongly with the antiserum against ZYMV, and other tested antisera did not react with the CP of ZYMV-A. Results strongly suggest that the potyvirus infecting hollyhock was a novel strain of ZYMV. This is the first report on ZYMV as the causal virus infecting hollyhock in Korea.

OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: The cysteinyl leukotriene receptor 2 (CYSLTR2) gene on chromosome 13q14.12–q21.1 encodes a receptor for CYSLTs, potent biological mediators in the pathogenesis of asthma, particularly that associated with aspirin intolerance (AIA). In an effort to discover additional polymorphism(s), the variant(s) of which have been implicated in asthma and aspirin intolerance, we scrutinized genetic polymorphisms of the CYSLTR2 gene, and evaluated this locus as a potential candidate for asthma. RESULTS: DNA sequencing in 24 Koreans of the 5-kb region of the CYSLTR2 gene, including the ∼1500-bp promoter region, revealed four sequence variants: one in the 5&vprime;-flanking region (c.−819T>G), two in the 3&vprime;-flanking region (c.2078C>T and c.2534A>G), and one downstream of the gene (c.2545+297A>G). The SNP frequencies were 0.499 (c.−819T>G), 0.351 (c.2078C>T), 0.429 (c.2534A>G), and 0.088 (c.2545+297A>G), and five haplotypes were constructed. The SNPs and haplotypes were not associated with risk of asthma development, but were significantly associated with aspirin intolerance. The frequencies of rare alleles on c.−819T>G, c.2078C>T, and c.2534A>G were higher in subjects with AIA than in subjects with aspirin-tolerant asthma (P=0.013–0.031). Asthmatics who had rare alleles for c.−819T>G, c.2078C>T or c.2534A>G exhibited a more pronounced fall in FEV1 after aspirin provocation than did those who carried the common allele (P=0.03–0.009). Asthmatics carrying ht2 (TTGA) also showed a more pronounced decrease in FEV1% after aspirin provocation than those carrying ht1 (GCGA) (P=0.006). These associations were even stronger when combined with LTC4S polymorphisms (−444A>C [c.−444A>C]) gene. CONCLUSION: CYSLTR2 polymorphisms are associated with aspirin intolerance in asthmatics.

In the Chromosome-Centric Human Proteome Project (C-HPP), false positive identification by peptide spectrum matches (PSMs) after database searches is a major issue for proteogenomic studies using liquid-chromatography and mass-spectrometry-based large proteomic profiling. Here we developed a simple strategy for protein identification, with a controlled false discovery rate (FDR) at the protein level, using an integrated proteomic pipeline (IPP) that consists of four engrailed steps as follows. First, using three different search engines, SEQUEST, MASCOT, and MS-GF +, individual proteomic searches were performed against the neXtProt database. Second, the search results from the PSMs were combined using statistical evaluation tools including DTASelect and Percolator. Third, the peptide search scores were converted into E-scores normalized using an in-house program. Last, Proteinlnferencer was used to filter the proteins containing two or more peptides with a controlled FDR of 1.0% at the protein level. Finally, we compared the performance of the IPP to a conventional proteomic pipeline (CPP) for protein identification using a controlled FDR of <1% at the protein level. Using the IPP, a total of 5756 proteins (vs 4453 using the CPP) including 477 alternative splicing variants (vs 182 using the CPP) were identified from human hippocampal tissue. In addition, a total of 10 missing proteins (vs 7 using the CPP) were identified with two or more unique peptides, and their tryptic peptides were validated using MS/MS spectral pattern from a repository database or their corresponding synthetic peptides. This study shows that the IPP effectively improved the identification of proteins, including alternative splicing variants and missing proteins, in human hippocampal tissues for the C-HPP.
A copper matrix composite reinforced with in situ TiB2 nanoparticle was successfully fabricated by tubulent in-situ mixing process. The microstructure, mechanical and electrical properties of the in situ composite were investigated. The results showed that the in situ formed TiB2 particles, in which size varying from about 50nm to 200nm, exhibited a homogenous dispersion in the copper matrix. It is shown that the interface between the nanoscale particles and the matrix was clean without a transitional layer. Because of the reinforcement, the hardness and Young’s Modulus of the composite improved with increment of cooling rate. Moreover, the in situ Cu-TiB2 composite exhibited higher electrical conductivity with increasing of cooling rate.
