Design of Terahertz Band Communication System with 1-bit ADC and Oversampling

Receivers with 1-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and time-domain oversampling have been investigated with the aim of reducing power consumption for terahertz band communication. However, existing implementations have failed to reach the theoretical bound on spectral efficiency (SE) while also warranting error-rate performance. Currently, there are conventional approaches using designs such as run-length-limited (RLL) sequences along with a deep learning (DL)-based approaches that are aimed at improving BER performance. This paper presents a comprehensive design framework for comparison through generalized system model and problem formulation. Furthermore, a DL-based solution approach is proposed and compared side by side with an existing method and shows over 1 dB gain in Block Error Rate performance at comparable SE and lower complexity of decoding. The proposed method allows effective trade-off between error rate and SE so that information rates near the limit defined by Shamai can be implemented, e.g., 80% of the limit, which exceeds the capacity that has been ever achieved by the existing works, to the best of our knowledge.
