The main goal of this work was to study the feasibility of using a low-density polyethylene (LDPE) as additive to improve the rheological properties of lithium lubricating greases. The combined effect that both soap and LDPE concentrations exerts on the rheology of lithium lubricating greases and its relationship with grease microstructure were studied according to an experimental design based on the response surface methodology (RSM). Different lubricating grease formulations were manufactured by modifying lithium 12-hydroxystereate and LDPE concentrations. Small-amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) and viscous flow measurements, as well as mechanical stability tests, were performed. In addition to these, environmental scanning electronic microscopy (ESEM) was used to determine grease microstructure. LDPE was found to be a useful additive to modify grease rheology, acting as filler in the entangled soap network. The values of both apparent viscosity and linear viscoelasticity functions increase with soap and LDPE concentration. However, the addition of LDPE distorts soapmicrostructural network, yielding greases with lower relative elastic characteristics.

Background Lipoid proteinosis (LP) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized bya hoarse voice, variable scarring, and infiltration of the skin and mucosa. This disease is associated with mutations of the gene encoding extracellular matrix protein 1 (ECM1). Case Report This was a clinical and molecular study of a new case of LP with a severe phenotype. A 35-year-old female born to nonconsanguineous parents developed dermatologicaland extracutaneous symptoms in her 9th month of life. The neurological abnormalities of thedisease began to appear at the age of 19 years. Computed tomography revealed cranial calcifications. Conclusions The diagnosis of LP was confirmed by histopathological findings and direct sequencing of ECM1. A new homozygous nonsense mutation was identified in exon 7 of ECM1, c.1076G>A (p.Trp359*). This mutation was not detected in 106 chromosomes of healthy individuals with a similar demographic origin. Microsatellite markers around ECM1 were used to construct the haplotype in both the parents and the patient. Reports on genotype-phenotype correlations in LP point to a milder phenotype in carriers of missense mutations in the Ecm1a isoform, whereas mutations in the Ecm1b isoform are thought to be associated with more severe phenotypes. The present findings in a Spanish patient carrying a truncating mutation in exon 7 revealed complete dermatological and neurological manifestations.
Development of a DNA-dosimeter system for monitoring the effects of solar-ultraviolet radiation

Solar radiation sustains and affects all life forms on Earth. In recent years, the increase in environmental levels of solar-UV radiation due to depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer, as a result of anthropogenic emission of destructive chemicals, has highlighted serious issues of social concern. This becomes still more dramatic in tropical and subtropical regions, where the intensity of solar radiation is higher. To better understand the impact of the harmful effects of solar-UV radiation on the DNA molecule, we developed a reliable biological monitoring system based on the exposure of plasmid DNA to artificial UV lamps and sunlight. The determination and quantification of different types of UV photoproducts were performed through the use of specific DNA repair enzymes and antibodies. As expected, a significant number of CPDs and 6-4PPs was observed when the DNA-dosimeter system was exposed to increasing doses of UVB radiation. Moreover, CPDs could also be clearly detected in plasmid DNA when this system was exposed to either UVA or directly to sunlight. Interestingly, although less abundant, 6-4PPs and oxidative DNA damage were also generated after exposure to both UVA and sunlight. These results confirm the genotoxic potential of sunlight, reveal that UVA may also produce CPDs and 6-4PPs directly in naked DNA and demonstrate the applicability of a DNA-dosimeter system for monitoring the biological effects of solar-UV radiation.
Bragg reflection of terahertz waves in plasmonic crystals

<P>We present experimental and theoretical studies on terahertz surface plasmon (TSP) propagation on slit and rectangular aperture arrays in an aluminum sheet. Terahertz waves are coupled onto the plasmonic structures via a parallel plate waveguide. Long-lasting oscillations are observed in the temporal pulse shape after propagating through the periodic structure, whose Fourier transformation into the frequency domain results in Bragg-resonance spectral features. We show that the interference between the incident wave and the radiation reflected from both the aperture array and the waveguide block is responsible for this Bragg-resonance behavior. The reflection coefficient for a single slit is deduced to be 0.017 +/- 0.002.</P>

Objective To find the safety of long-acting injectable antipsychotics (LAIs) compared to each other, and/or placebo in the treatment of schizophrenia (SCZ) and/or schizoaffective disorder (SZA).Methods We performed a systematic review and a network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the safety of LAIs versus other LAIs or placebo in adults diagnosed with SCZ or SZA. The primary outcomes were treatment emergent adverse events (TEAEs), serious treatment emergent adverse events (STEAEs), and deaths. The secondary outcomes included treatment discontinuations due to adverse events and all-cause discontinuations. Results Seventeen RCTs were included (n=7,908). There were no significant differences between LAIs and placebo in the risk of presenting TEAEs. LAIs had a significant lower risk of presenting STEAEs except for aripiprazole. No significant differences in deaths were found. LAIs showed a significant protective effect against all-cause discontinuation, except for haloperidol. Only aripiprazole had a significantly lower risk of treatment discontinuation due to adverse events. Conclusion We found no significant differences in the risk of presenting TEAEs between LAIs and placebo. The majority of LAIs had a significantly lower risk of presenting STEAEs than placebo. Development of international guidelines for the report of safety outcomes related to antipsychotics especially for LAIs in clinical trials could minimize report and interpretation biases and improve the accuracy of posterior meta-analysis.

<P>We present a wafer-scale array of resonant coaxial nanoapertures as a practical platform for surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRA). Coaxial nanoapertures with sub-10 nm gaps are fabricated via photolithography, atomic layer deposition of a sacrificial Al2O3 layer to define the nanogaps, and planarization via glancing-angle ion milling. At the zeroth-order Fabry-Pérot resonance condition, our coaxial apertures act as a “zero-mode resonator (ZMR)”, efficiently funneling as much as 34% of incident infrared (IR) light along 10 nm annular gaps. After removing Al2O3 in the gaps and inserting silk protein, we can couple the intense optical fields of the annular nanogap into the vibrational modes of protein molecules. From 7 nm gap ZMR devices coated with a 5 nm thick silk protein film, we observe high-contrast IR absorbance signals drastically suppressing 58% of the transmitted light and infer a strong IR absorption enhancement factor of 104∼105. These single nanometer gap ZMR devices can be mass-produced via batch processing and offer promising routes for broad applications of SEIRA.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>
