        Effect of second hardening on floor response spectrum of a base-isolated nuclear power plant

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The floor response spectra are calculated by constructing a numerical model (APR1400) equipped with base isolators of a bilinear material and a Bouc-Wen material, respectively, in order to investigate the effect of the second hardening. The variations of the earthquakes are incorporated to the loads, and two different properties of the isolator materials are modeled. The second hardening behavior increases the stiffness of the isolator in the high strain regime and suppresses the displacement of the isolator. Therefore, the role of the base isolation device isolating the superstructure from the ground motion does not perform properly, which causes amplification of the floor response of the superstructure. In practice, the second hardening of the isolator material might need to be taken into account for designing the base isolation system.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The effect of variability in the isolation device and earthquake is evaluated. </LI> <LI> The variability in earthquake characteristics dominates the floor response spectrum. </LI> <LI> Bouc-Wen model is employed to consider the second hardening behavior of isolator. </LI> <LI> The second hardening behavior is evaluated at various PGA levels. </LI> </UL> </P>

        The effects of stacking sequence on the penetration-resistant behaviors of T800 carbon fiber composite plates under low-velocity impact loading

        Impact damages induced by a low-velocity impact load on carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite plates fabricated with various stacking sequences were studied experimentally. The impact responses of the CFRP composite plates were significantly affected by the laminate stacking sequences. Three types of specimens, specifically quasi-isotropic, unidirectional, and cross-ply, were tested by a constant impact carrying the same impact energy level. An impact load of 3.44 kg, corresponding to 23.62 J, was applied to the center of each plate supported at the boundaries. The unidirectional composite plate showed the worst impact resistance and broke completely into two parts; this was followed by the quasi-isotropic lay-up plate that was perforated by the impact. The cross-ply composite plate exhibited the best resistance to the low-velocity impact load; in this case, the impactor bounced back. Impact parameters such as the peak impact force and absorbed energy were evaluated and compared for the impact resistant characterization of the composites made by different stacking sequences.

      • Investigation on the resistance of steel-plate concrete walls under high-velocity impact

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this study, an influence of the front steel plate of the steel-plate concrete (SC) composite walls on the impact resistance performance is analytically derived, and verified by comparison with numerical analyses and experiment results. SC composite wall is remarkably superior in resistance against impacts compared to normal concrete because steel plates control and prevent fragmentation caused by the fracture of concrete material. An analytical criterion for estimating resistance capacity against impact loads is proposed by adding the effect of a front steel plate into the existing impact resistance equation of SC composite walls, and the criterion more accurately predicts the failure modes of SC composite walls in the impact tests. Finite element (FE) models are constructed to predict the impact response of SC composite walls numerically and verified with experiment results. The critical velocity is numerically derived using FE models by performing a large number of iterative simulations, and the proposed criterion including the effect of front steel plate is more accurate for estimating critical velocity than the formula that ignores the front steel plate. The proposed analytical and numerical procedures will be useful for assessing the critical velocities and failure modes of SC composite walls with better accuracy.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> We derive an analytical criterion including the effect of the front steel plate. </LI> <LI> Numerical models are verified in terms of the residual velocity of the projectile. </LI> <LI> The criterion is verified by comparing with experimental and numerical results. </LI> <LI> The effect of the front plate should be considered for accurate estimation. </LI> </UL> </P>

        민감도 분석에 의한 LHR 모형의 검증

        LHR(Landfill Hazard Ranking Model) was developed for assessing the relative hazard of landfills by using the method of value-structured approach. LHR consists of combining a multiattribute decision-making method with a qualitative risk assessment approach. A pairwise comparision method was applied to determine weights of landfill factors related. To prove the validity of weights allocation of landfill hazard evaluation factors, sensitivity analysis was applied. Firstly, the impact on landfill hazard score according to variations of weights of landfill hazard factors was analyzed. Secondly, the impact on landfill hazard score according to conditions change of landfill hazard factors was analyzed. As a result of sensitivity analysis, LHR composite scores are largely influenced by some factors following sequential order such as waste volume, proximity to sensitive environments, containment facilities, distance from drinking water supplies, and waste toxicity. The relative order of landfill hazard evaluated by LHR is not influenced by the weights change of individual factors. Therefore, LHR seems to be a credible model to determine priorities of landfill remediation based on the vulnerability of water resources.

        수자원 오염 특성에 의한 불량매립지 에비평가모형 정립

        To assess preliminarily the contamination potential of water resources including groundwater owing to the hydrogeological characteristics of landfill site and the potential impact to humans and animals through contamination of water resources by leachate, "Landfill Site Preliminary Assessment Model(LASPAS)" was contrived. LASPAS could help them proritization of remediation of landfil sites by the convenient and relatively simple evaluation method of landfill site features. LASPAS was designd to aliot numerical ratings to landfill site related factors undermentioned ; 1) hydrogeological factors such as hydraulic conductivity of aquifer, thickness of confining layer over aquifer, topographical slope, net recharge, and subsurface containment 2) water resources contamination factors of impacts on receptors such as proximity to drinking water supply, substitutability of drinking water supply, type of use of water resources, known impact on drinking water supply, and flood potential.

        가치구조화기법에 의한 매립지 유해성 등급화

LHR consists of combining a multiattribute decision-making method with a qualitative risk assessment approach. A pairwise comparision method was applied to determine weights of landfill site factors related. To determine the hazard of landfill site, hydrogeological factors, waste characteristics factors and receptors factors were evaluated by LHR. LHR can help decision-makers prioritization of remediation of landfill sites through the relatively convenient and concise evaluation method of landfill site features related. LHR focuses mainly on pathways of groundwater and surfacewater for evaluating landfill hazard to receptors including humans. To validiate the applicability of LHR, Nanjido Landfill site, Metropolitan Landfill site, and Hwasung Landfill site were evalulated.

        Background: Gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) is an enzyme mainly produced from the cells of the hepatobiliary tract. And, It has been introduced as a biomarker for oxidative stress by smoking as well as alcohol consumption. This study was performed to evaluate the association between smoking and serum GGT concentration Methods: The effect of cigarette smoking on serum activities of the enzyme, GGT was investigated using the data of the 5th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (5th KNHANES, 2010 to 2012); a cross-sectional survey in the general population of Korea. Results: We analyzed 11,670 subjects (age> 19 years) who had the data about smoking status and serum GGT levels. Subjects comprised 4,597 subjects who are cigarette smokers and 7,073 who do not smoke, which serves as control. The mean ± standard deviation (S.D) of serum GGT levels in cigarette smokers and non-smokers were 48.74± 69.35 U/L and 23.18± 24.03 U/L respectively, showing a significant increase in serum level of GGT (P<0.001) when compared with controls. GGT levels showed a significant positive correlation with amount of smoking (r=0.249, P<0.001). Cigarette smoking produced a significant increase in GGT activity irrespective of low to moderate alcohol consumption Conclusions: The levels of serum GGT was significantly associated with the status and amount of smoking. Smoking should be taken into account when assessing the signifi-cance of GGT activities.
