Using Agents and Robotic Soccer for Undergraduate Education
John Anderson,Jacky Baltes 한국과학기술원 인간친화 복지 로봇 시스템 연구센터 2005 International Journal of Assistive Robotics and Me Vol.6 No.2
Robotic soccer is a well-known challenge problem for artificial intelligence and robotics. Two well-known annual competitions, RoboCup and FIRA allow teams to compete in a number of different leagues distinguished by robot size and hardware restrictions. We have been using RoboCup soccer as a means of teaching applied artificial intelligence to undergraduates, and have found it to be a very motivating vehicle for encouraging undergraduate exploration in this area, as well as an effective means for teaching students about artificial intelligence, real-time systems, and software engineering. It is also, however, a domain whose complexity must be carefully managed in order to allow undergraduates to participate successfully. This paper describes our strategies for using robotic soccer for undergraduate education, and in particular the agent-based approach that we employ to make the domain manageable for students at this level.
Claviceps sp . 에서 Cytochrome P - 450 및 NADPH - Cytochrome c Reductase 정제 및 그 특성

Microsomes of Claviceps purpurea PRL 1980 had a maximum concentration of cytochrome P-450 of 40 pmole per ㎎ protein. Cytochrome P-450 and NADPH-cytochrome c reductase were purified from C. purpurea PRL 1980 microsomes to concentrations of 421 pmole per ㎎ protein and 387 pmole per min per mg protein, respectively. Activity was not reconstituted from these fractions, but NADPH-cytochrome c reductase increased agroclavine hydroxylase activity of C. purpurea PRL 1980 microsomes. The activity was not stimulated by rat liver microsomal NADPH-cytochrome c reductase. Claviceps sp. SD58 microsomal agroclavine hydroxylase had V_(max) of 3.3 pkat per ㎎ and K_m of 0.11 mM for agroclavine. Agroclavine bound to cytochrome P-450 from Claviceps sp. SD58 to give a type II spectrum. The absorbance maximum in the CO-reduced vs reduced difference spectrum of purified cytochrome P-450 from C. purpurea PRL 1980 and Claviceps sp. SD58 was at 449 ㎚.

Objective: To determine if there is correlation between intradiscal levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and early outcome measures in patients undergoing lumbar fusion for painful disc degeneration. Methods: Intervertebral disc tissue was separated into annulus fibrosus/nucleus pulposus and cultured separately in vitro in serum-free medium (Opti-MEM). Conditioned media was collected after 48 hours. The concentration of IL-6 was quantified using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Pearson correlation coefficients quantified relationships between IL-6 levels and pre- and postoperative visual analogue scale (VAS) back pain and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), as well as change in VAS/ODI. Results: Sixteen discs were harvested from 9 patients undergoing anterior lumbar interbody fusion (mean age, 47.4 years; range, 21–70 years). Mean preoperative and 6-month postoperative VAS were 8.1 and 3.7, respectively. Mean preoperative and postoperative ODI were 56.2 and 25.6, respectively. There were significant positive correlations between IL-6 expression and postoperative VAS (ρ=0.38, p=0.048) and ODI (ρ=0.44, p=0.02). No significant correlations were found between intradiscal IL-6 expression and preoperative VAS (ρ=-0.12, p=0.54). Trends were seen associating IL-6 expression and change in VAS/ODI (ρ=-0.35 p=0.067; ρ=-0.34, p=0.08, respectively). A trend associated IL-6 and preoperative ODI (ρ=0.36, p=0.063). Conclusion: The direct association between IL-6 expression and VAS/ODI suggests patients with elevated intradiscal cytokine expression may have worse early outcomes than those with lower expression of IL-6 after surgery for symptomatic disc degeneration.
Introductory Programming Workshop for Children Using Robotics
Jacky Baltes,John Anderson 한국과학기술원 인간친화 복지 로봇 시스템 연구센터 2005 International Journal of Assistive Robotics and Me Vol.6 No.2
Teaching programming concepts to children is a challenging task : to do so effectively requires both curriculum that is organized in a manner that assists children to learn the concepts involved easily, as well as making the content motivating and accessible. While many of the abstract concepts involved in programming are not easily grasped by children, physical metaphors have been used in the past to improve the learning process. Moreover, children are fascinated by the manipulation of physical objects and the creation of physical artifacts. We combine these ideas to use robotics to teach children both the elementary concepts involved in programming (e.g. control flow), as well as some concepts that are often difficult for university students to grasp (e.g. parallel processing). This paper overviews our techniques for accomplishing this through the design of a one-day workshop to introduce children to programming using robotics.
