There have been several positive criteria for skin prick test, which has been most commonly used in the diagnosis of allergic diseases. Among them, comparing wheal size induced by allergen to that induced by histamine is logical for criteria of skin prick test positivity. We measured the wheal sizes induced by histamine and various causative allergens with five minutes interval, from 5 minutes to 40 minutes, and compared of the time which the wheal size of both reached at peak. The followings were the summary of the findings. 1. Maximal sizes of wheals induced by histamine reached at 12 minutes in average. 2. Maximal sizes of wheals induced by allergens reached at 15 minutes in average. 3. There was no statistical difference between the time of maximal size of wheal induced by histamine and causative allergen.

Probiotics consumption has become a necessity in diet to metabolic syndrome. In this study, in vitro effects of anti-metabolic syndrome were confirmed on the probiotic strain isolated from feces. Each of the strain upregulated the mRNA expressions on zo-1, claudin-1 and occludin related to intestinal tight junction in human epithelial colorectal cell. In particular, the lactiplantibacillus treatment groups significantly upregulated the erk1/2 and map expression related to cell proliferation. In addition, the strain showed that upregulation of ppar-α related to fatty acid oxidation and downregulation of glut-2 related to glucose uptake. Based on the results of this study, we are conducting in vivo experiments to verify the efficacy of the probiotics for alleviating metabolic syndrome.

이 논문에서는 Envisat ASAR, JERS-1 SAR 영상과 현장조사 자료를 이용하여 ridge-runnel구조 및 연흔이 잘 발달해 있는 태안 몽산포 조간대를 분석하였다. 도전재를 통한 실리콘 음극의 전기화학적 특성 향상에 관한 연구

This research analyzed the effect of SWCNT and Ketjen black conductive material on the performance of Pure Si electrodes in lithium-ion batteries. Silicon suffers from various problems due to large volume changes during cycling. This study measured the performance improvement of silicon electrodes by applying conductive materials of different types and analyzed the improvement mechanism through electrochemical methods. Silicon electrodes that use SWCNT conductive materials showed high initial capacity and efficiency, and the results of superior power characteristics compared to electrodes that use Ketjen black conductive materials were shown. It was confirmed that charge transfer resistance and electrode degradation were suppressed when using SWCNT conductive materials through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and trickle charge. As a result, this study emphasizes the importance of controlling the type and shape of conductive materials to achieve excellent electrode integrity and electrochemical properties of silicon anodes.

Patients undergoing maintenance dialysis show an increased susceptibility to tuberculosis because host immunity is decreased secondary to malnutrition, impaired cellular immunity, acidosis and etc. Extrapulmonary tuberculosis is more prevalent in patients with end stage renal disease than in normal subjects. Among the extrapulmonary tuberculosis in patients receiving hemodialysis, the diagnosis of tuberculous spondylitis is difficult because the symptoms are non specific and attributable to uremia, and the appearance of plain radiographs is often normal during the early phase of the disease. We experienced a case of tuberculous spondylitis in a hemodialysis patient. A 55 years old female admitted with fever, weight loss and back pain. Conventional radiograph of T-spine showed no definite abnormal finding. However, chest CT revealed heterogeneously enhancing soft tissue around the T8 vertebral body and T-spine MRI showed compatible finding to tuberculous spondylitis. She received radical excision of involved vertebra and confirmed tuberculous spondylitis with histologic finding from a surgical specimen. Following the administration of anti-tuberculosis medication(isoniazid, rifampin, pyraziamide, ethambutol) and radical excision, patient`s symptom and sign were improved. The patient is maintaining dialysis with anti-tuberculosis medication for 5 months.
Nuclear Localization and Functional Characteristics of Voltage-gated Potassium Channel Kv1.3

<P>It is widely known that ion channels are expressed in the plasma membrane. However, a few studies have suggested that several ion channels including voltage-gated K<SUP>+</SUP> (Kv) channels also exist in intracellular organelles where they are involved in the biochemical events associated with cell signaling. In the present study, Western blot analysis using fractionated protein clearly indicates that Kv1.3 channels are expressed in the nuclei of MCF7, A549, and SNU-484 cancer cells and human brain tissues. In addition, Kv1.3 is located in the plasma membrane and the nucleus of Jurkat T cells. Nuclear membrane hyperpolarization after treatment with margatoxin (MgTX), a specific blocker of Kv1.3 channels, provides evidence for functional channels at the nuclear membrane of A549 cells. MgTX-induced hyperpolarization is abolished in the nuclei of Kv1.3 silenced cells, and the effects of MgTX are dependent on the magnitude of the K<SUP>+</SUP> gradient across the nuclear membrane. Selective Kv1.3 blockers induce the phosphorylation of cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) and c-Fos activation. Moreover, Kv1.3 is shown to form a complex with the upstream binding factor 1 in the nucleus. Chromatin immunoprecipitation assay reveals that Sp1 transcription factor is directly bound to the promoter region of the Kv1.3 gene, and the Sp1 regulates Kv1.3 expression in the nucleus of A549 cells. These results demonstrate that Kv1.3 channels are primarily localized in the nucleus of several types of cancer cells and human brain tissues where they are capable of regulating nuclear membrane potential and activation of transcription factors, such as phosphorylated CREB and c-Fos.</P>
Assessing Vascular Changes Associated with Healthy Aging using 7T Magnetic Resonance Angiography

Aging is known to produce changes in the cerebral vasculature and circulation. We aimed to quantitatively assess age-related changes in the morphology of small perforating vessels, lenticulostriate arteries (LSAs). LSA images were acquired using ultra-high field 7-Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (7T MRI) from 24 young healthy volunteers (young group: YG) and 25 old healthy volunteers (old group: OG). Vessel-related factors such as curvature and tortuosity were analyzed using two-dimensional images. Our quantitative results demonstrated a fewer in their branches and a significantly more pronounced curvature in the OG compared to the YG. These findings were further confirmed qualitatively using image analysis. Our study findings show that MR angiography utilizing ultra-high field MRI can provide high-resolution images that can identify morphological characteristics of small perforating vessels. Based on these features, it is possible to document ageinduced changes in cerebral small vessels.
