Pollens gathered by bees at an apiary at Daegu district were identified with light microscope and scanning electro microscope for effective establishment of honey plant plantations for year-round honey production. Pollen loads were collected from bees from March to October at one week interval, ten loads at each collecting time, a load from a colony. Pollens from fifty-four species were collected and 34 species were identified and 20 species unidentified, which would be identified later. Most of the pollen loads were composed with one species. However, a few loads were composed with up to four species. Pollens of 37 species were collected just one time. Pollens from just one species were not collected at any time. In July pollens from many species, up to six species at July 15 and 20, were collected. Pollens of four species, Erigeron annuus, Lagerstroemia indica, Koelreuteria paniculata, Evodia daniellii, were collected up to one month. As the latter two species were known as good honey producing plants, these two species proved to be good pollen producing plants. The former two species were known as poor honey producing plants, the importance of these two species should be reevaluated.

The styles of management of university forests in Korea were reviewed for better management of the Taegu University forest. The average areas of university forests for private universities and national universities were 1,159ha and 3,693ha, respectively. Management and average stock volume were quite different among universities, reflecting the established period, past management and enthusiasm of the personnel. The university forests of Seoul National University were established about 70 years ago and have been manged by more than 40 personnel. Those of Kangwon National University also have a long history and some forests have over 350㎥/ha. Forests of private universities have been managed somewhat poorly because of low investment. However all forests have been used for students' field practice because of low investment. However all forests have been used for students' field practice and professors' research purposes. The forest of Taegu University was established in 1986 with 307.6 ha of the Younggwang Foundation's own forest and 507.6 ha of rented forest from Seungju-gun, Kyungbukdo. As most of the area is covered with young oaks, the average stock volume is less than 3㎥/ha. Only 25 hectares are covered with korean white pine and larch and the average stock volume of the area is 6.3㎥/ha. A total of 20 hectares was reforested in 1986 and 1987, five hectares with korean white pine and five hectares with larch in each of these years. Another 50 hectares, 25 hectares of conifers mentioned above and 25 hectares of oaks, were thinned and pruned. For the better management of the University forest, four proposals were made: 1. Increase the stock volume by tending natural oaks. 2. Appoint personnel in charge, construct buildings for management and students' field practice, and establish transportation. 3. Start basic research on soil and ecology in the forest for long term research projects. 4. Establish another university forest on the Kyungsan campus and another conifer forest in northern Kyungbuk-do or Kangwon-do.

Tree isozyme studies in Korea were reviewed. Isozymes have been studied in many fields such as genetics of isozymes, linkage, identification of clones, estimation of selfing frequency in seed orchards, relationships between isozyme variables and important traits, population genetics and comparison of pupulations, identification of species and grouping of species, utilization in biotechnology. In order to expand the use of isozyme in forestry, more isozymes should be analyzed and close cooperation among researchers are needed. In the future, more serious utilization of isozymes is expected in seed orchards and biotechnology studies.

경상북도 경산시에 위치한 대구대학교 수목원에 있는 매실나무에 방화하는 꿀벌의 수를 3월 18일부터 4월 1일까지 조사하였다. 조사한 나무는 16년생 8본과 4년생 4본이었다. 16년생은 주로 꽃을 감상하는 '설중매'라는 품종 4본과 열매를 목적으로 한 품종 4본이었다. 설중매는 다른 품종에 비해 나무의 크기가 작고 꽃의 수도 적었다. 개화기간 중 3월 20일 7시부터 19시까지 꽃을 방화한 벌의 수를 조사한 결과, 기온이 12℃로 오른 11시부터 방화하기 시작하여 16시까지 계속되었다. 설중매를 개화가 다소 빨랐으며(3월 18일 ~ 3월 27일), 다른 품종은 다소 늦었다(3월 20일 ~ 4월 1일). 설중매는 꽃의 수가 훨씬 적음에도 불구하고 방화한 꿀벌의 수는 약 2배 많아, 꿀벌은 설중매를 선호하는 것으로 나타났다. 4년생 매실나무에 방화한 꿀벌이 16년생에 비하여 더 많았는데, 4년생이 양봉장에서 더 가까워서이거나, 16년생은 능선을 넘어 위치한 때문일 것이다. 매실나무의 개화기간에 꿀벌에 대한 경쟁식물로는 회양목, 개암나무, 산수유 등으로 조사되었다. 월동을 끝낸 늙은 꿀벌이 새 꿀벌을 양성하는 이 시기에 개화하는 매실나무는 귀중한 밀원식물인 것으로 확인되었다. Studies on foraging activity of honey bees at flowers of Prunus mume were investigated in order to evaluate the species as honey plants from March 18 to April 1 in 2003 at the arboretum in Daegu University. Cultivar 'Seoljungmae(Cherry in the snow)' bloomed a little earlier and more bees visited this cultivar., though this cultivar. was smaller and had less flowers. Distance from the apiary or(and) the ridge between trees and the apiary seems to discourage bees to visit flowers, as more bees visited smaller trees which located nearer and same direction of the slope with the apiary. Prunus mume was proved as a good honey plant species at early spring for over-wintered old bees to rear new bees.

As an example of strategies for continuous development of beekeeping industry in Korea, year-round honey production with establishing honey plants plantations on forests was carried out and the results were promising, 19 spieces were chosen and plantations were established on the campus of Daegu University this spring. Honey was harvested 7 times, from April to September, and honey from black locust shared 22.5%. This share was much lower than 70% of beekeepers who keep bees without establishing honey plant plantations. Though considering very poor harvest from black locust this year, production of 77.5% of honey from other honey plants are promising, because more blooming would be expected from plantations established this year.
