Primary Pulmonary Hypertension in a Maltese Dog

A 1-year-old castrated male Maltese dog (weighing 2.4 kg) was presented with primary complaints ofocasional coughing, dyspnea and exercise intolerance. Badiastolic regurgitant murmur, marked dilation of pulmonary artery, right ventricular eccentric hypertrophy withthickening of ventricular septum, severe tricuspid and pulmonic regurgitation (5.4 m/sec and 3.4 m/sec, respectively)and the absence of any congenital intracardiac shunting, obstructive pulmonary diseases and systemic diseases associatedwith right ventricular pressure overload or pulmonary hyperperfusion, the case was tentatively diagnosed as primarypulmonary hypertension. The dog was treated with furosemide, aspirin and oxygen supplementation. This case reportdescribed a rare case of primary pulmonary hypertension in a Maltese dog.

intolerance, especially after vigorous exercise. Physical examination revealed split S1 and grade III/VI diastolicregurgitant murmur at the left apex and base, respectively. ECG finding was normal sinus rhythm at rest, butsupraventricular tachycardia with bundle branch blocks after exercise. Thoracic radiography revealed dilated ascendingaorta with normal range of cardiac silhouette (VHS 10.2). Echocardiography revealed abnormal valvular structuresjust above the aortic valvular cusps causing aortic regurgitation with a reduction of left ventricular ejection fraction(LVEF). Based on those findings, the case was diagnosed as congenital aortic regurgitation caused by abnormal valvularstructures. The dog was managed with diltiazem and exercise restriction. This is a rare case of aortic deformity in dogs.
비구조 단백질 유전자 primer를 사용한 RT-PCR에 의한 인플루엔자 A형 바이러스의 검출

Influeza type A virus have been worldwide problematic in animals as well as in humans. In this study, the use of reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was described for detecting influenza virus type A. The primer of RT-PCR was designed from an nonstructural (NS) gene of Influenza A virus. By RT-PCR, a product with the size of 189 bp was detected only when influenza virus type A was used as template. No products could be detected with Influenza virus type B as well as other respiratory pathogens. The detection limit of the RT-PCR was up to 100.3TCID50 which is comparable to the sensitivity of cell culture method. The RT-PCR could detect the influenza A virus from nasal turbinates of the ferrets infected with influenza virus type A not type B.

목적: 저자들은 AO 분류 C3 원위 요골 골절에서 금속판을 이용한 내고정술 시 임상적 및 방사선학적 결과에 대해서 알고자 하였다. 대상 및 방법: 18예를 대상으로 하였고, 평균 추시 기간은 16개월이었다. 남자가 12명, 여자가 6명이었고, 평균 연령은 47.1세였다. AO 분류에서 C3.1이 9예, C3.2가 5예, C3.3가 4예였다. 임상적으로 Green & O`Brien`s score 및 Demerit Point system을 이용하였고, 방사선학적으로 수술 직후와 최종 추시의 요골 길이, 요골 경사각, 수장측 경사각, Sarmiento Criteria로 평가하였다. 결과: Green & O`Brien`s score에서 우수 5예, 양호 7예, 보통 6예였고, Demerit Point system에서는 우수 5예, 양호 6예, 보통 7예였다. 수술 직후 및 최종 추시상 비교에서 요골 길이, 요골 경사각 및 수장측 경사각의 변화는 통계학적 의의가 없었다. Sarmiento criteria로는 우수 8예, 양호 4예, 보통 6예였다. 결론: AO 분류 C3형의 골절에서 금속판 고정은 술 후 정복 소실이 거의 없는 견고한 고정을 할 수 있고 조기 재활이 가능한 좋은 치료 방법으로 생각한다. There was no significant difference of radiographic results between immediate post-operation and last follow-up, and Sarmiento`s Criteria showed 8 excellent, 4 good, and 6 fair. Conclusion: The open reduction and internal fixation with plate in AO type C3 distal radius is considered as a good treatment method that particularly benefits from fracture stable fixation without fixation loss and early rehabilitation.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Aflatoxins are naturally occurring carcinogens. Humans and animals, such as turkeys, are highly susceptible to aflatoxin-induced diseases. In this study, we investigated the inhibitory effects of 5 food additives on the growth and aflatoxin production in <I>Aspergillus flavus</I> ATCC 22546. Propionic acid completely inhibited fungal growth at a concentration of 0.5%. Furthermore, no fungal growth was observed when the growth medium was treated with 0.05% benzoic acid, 0.1% sorbic acid, 0.5% acetic acid, or 0.5% butyric acid. In comparison to propionic acid, other food additives showed weak antifungal activities. Propionic acid, butyric acid, benzoic acid, and sorbic acid also exhibited potent antiaflatoxigenic activities at a concentration of 0.1%. However, addition of 0.1% acetic acid did not inhibit aflatoxin production. At a concentration of 0.05%, propionic acid lost its antiaflatoxigenic activity, whereas at the same concentration, benzoic acid, butyric acid, and sorbic acid showed potent antiaflatoxigenic activities with a 95% inhibition of aflatoxin production. Benzoic acid drastically inhibited the expression of genes related to aflatoxin biosynthesis, whereas sorbic acid only inhibited the expression of a transcription gene, <I>yab</I>. Collectively, our results suggest that benzoic acid is promising alternative to propionic acid as food preservatives.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Food additives suppressed <I>Aspergillus flavus</I> growth and aflatoxin production. </LI> <LI> Benzoic acid showed strong inhibition on aflatoxin production at 0.05% level. </LI> <LI> Organic acids differently inhibited aflatoxin production by carbon skeleton numbers. </LI> <LI> Benzoic acid down-regulated strongly all genes involving in aflatoxin biosynthesis. </LI> </UL> </P>
CHAOTIC BEHVIOR OF MODIFED SMALE'S HORSESHOE MAP

Smale's Horseshoe map is a mathematical model describing chaotic behavior of dynamical systems. Here chaotic behavior of modified Smale's horseshoe map on R^3 is shown by using an approach that is an extension of that used for two-dimensional problem for the horseshoe map.
