• Structural Empowerment, Human Capital, and Organizational Innovation Capability: Focusing on Fit with Internal Workplace Contexts

        ChanHyuk Shin,DuckJung Shin 한국경영학회 2023 한국경영학회 통합학술발표논문집 Vol.2023 No.8

Building on workplace empowerment and human capital resource theory, we examine the role of human capital in the creation of organizational innovation capability through structural empowerment. We further propose the internal dynamic environment and strategic importance of human capital moderate the indirect effect of human capital in the relationship between structural empowerment and innovation capability. With a sample of 437 manufacturing firms representing 28,455 managers and employees from 2007 to 2019 in South Korea, we found that structural empowerment positively affects innovation capability via human capital. Moreover, we found that when structural empowerment is underpinned by a high internal dynamic environment or under high strategic importance of human capital, the indirect effect of structural empowerment on innovation capability.

      • From Employee-experienced Multiculturalism-enhancing HR Practices to MNEs’ Competitive Advantage: A Strategic Human Capital Resource Emergence Framework

        ChanHyuk Shin,DuckJung Shin 한국경영학회 2023 한국경영학회 통합학술발표논문집 Vol.2023 No.8

The performance effect of multiculturalism has attracted considerable research attention; however, the literature on multiculturalism has focused on micro-level outcomes, limiting our understanding of the meso-level source of competitive advantage. Building upon a strategic human capital resources emergence framework and multilevel approach, we suggest that employees’ experience of multiculturalism-enhancing HR practices creates multicultural individuals, leading to MNEs’ competitive advantage. Further, we examine the emergence-enabling mechanisms that facilitate multicultural individuals to improve competitive advantage by eliciting collective interactions. Specifically, we underline three distinct emergence enablers that facilitate the positive influences of multicultural-enhancing practices on competitive advantage by shaping the direction, concertedness, and adaptability of collective interactions: (1) the cultural experiences of top management team members (direction); (2) the importance of foreign languages within an organization (concertedness); and (3) the CQ-promoting practice (adaptability). With a sample of 471 MNEs in 24 manufacturing sectors representing 33,741 managers and employees from 2006 to 2015 in South Korea, we find that an employee’s experience of multiculturalism-enhancing HR practice positively related to competitive advantage. In addition, all three emergence enablers amplified the positive effects.

Size and morphological analyses of ultrasonicated hydrogen-producing granules using a simple method

        Shin, Seung Gu,Ahn, Yongtae,Park, Chanhyuk,Choi, Yun-Kyu,Cho, Hong-Mok,Cho, Si-Kyung Elsevier 2019 International journal of hydrogen energy Vol.44 No.4

Abstract

In this study, a quick and robust method using automated image analysis was suggested to analyze the size and the shape of biological granules. To verify this method, 6917 hydrogen (H2)-producing granule samples were scrutinized without any special equipment, and the results were statistically (ANOVA, t-test) interpreted at 95% confidence level to examine the effects of low-strength (LS) ultrasonication and effluent recirculation on the granular size and morphology. The fluctuations of both the size and roundness were identified even under same operating conditions. Both LS ultrasonication and effluent recirculation led to a 14% larger mean granular size. In contrast, LS ultrasonication but not recirculation significantly affected the roundness of H2-producing granules. The findings of this study successfully demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed methodology, which can be a useful tool to analyze different types of biogranules.

Highlights

A simple method to estimate granular morphology was suggested and demonstrated.

6917 H2-producing granules were scrutinized by the new method.

The results were statistically (ANOVA, t-test) interpreted at 95% confidence level.

Both low-strength ultrasonication and recirculation led to larger H2 granules.

Ultrasonication alone significantly affected the roundness of H2 granules.

The Effect of Paternalistic Leadership on Affective Commitment and Organizational Citizenship Behavior: Evidence from Chinese Employees

        김예진,신찬혁,YeJin Kim,Chanhyuk Shin Korean Regional Science Association 2024 지역연구 Vol.40 No.1

Our study investigates the impact of paternalistic leadership on organizational citizenship behavior in the Chinese context. First, we explore whether the benevolent, moral, and authoritative dimensions of paternalistic leadership positively influence organizational citizenship behavior. Second, we examine the mediating role of affective commitment. Third, we investigate whether power distance orientation and follower's age moderate the paternalistic leadership-affective commitment-organizational citizenship behavior mechanism. The results confirm the positive effects of the three sub-dimensions. We also confirm power distance orientation and follower's age moderate the effect of benevolent and moral aspects of paternalistic leadership. These underscore the importance of a dimensional analysis of paternalistic leadership. Theoretical and practical implications are also suggested.

Effects of changes in temperature on treatment performance and energy recovery at mainstream anaerobic ceramic membrane bioreactor for food waste recycling wastewater treatment

        Cho, Kyungjin,Jeong, Yeongmi,Seo, Kyu Won,Lee, Seockheon,Smith, Adam L.,Shin, Seung Gu,Cho, Si-Kyung,Park, Chanhyuk Elsevier 2018 Bioresource technology Vol.256 No.-

Abstract

An anaerobic ceramic membrane bioreactor (AnCMBR) has been attracted as an alternative technology to co-manage various organic substrates. This AnCMBR study investigated process performance and microbial community structure at decreasing temperatures to evaluate the potential of AnCMBR treatment for co-managing domestic wastewater (DWW) and food waste-recycling wastewater (FRW). As a result, the water flux (≥6.9 LMH) and organic removal efficiency (≥98.0%) were maintained above 25 °C. The trend of methane production in the AnCMBR was similar except for at 15 °C. At 15 °C, the archaeal community structure did not shifted, whereas the bacterial community structure was changed. Various major archaeal species were identified as the mesophilic methanogens which unable to grow at 15 °C. Our results suggest that the AnCMBR can be applied to co-manage DWW and FRW above 20 °C. Future improvements including psychrophilic methanogen inoculation and process optimization would make co-manage DWW and FRW at lower temperature climates.

Highlights

Low-temperature anaerobic ceramic membrane bioreactor was evaluated.

AnCMBR for treating a dilute FRW and domestic wastewater mixture.

AnCMBR was successfully applied at ambient temperature for co-managing DWW and FRW.

Microbial community structure was shifted by the temperature changes.

Methanogenic activity was inhibited at 15 °C in AnCMBR treatment.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]
