        Yield Response of Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] to High Temperature Condition in a Temperature Gradient Chamber

        Recently, abnormal weather conditions, such as extreme high temperatures and droughts, have increased in frequency due to climate change, there has accordingly been growing concern regarding the detrimental effects on field crop, including soybean. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the effects of increased temperatures on soybean growth and yield using a temperature gradient chamber (TGC). Two major types of soybean cultivar, a medium- seed cultivar such as Daepung-2 and a large-seed cultivar such as Daechan, were used and four temperature treatments, aT+1℃ (ambient temperature+1℃), aT+2℃ (ambient temperature+2℃), aT+3℃ (ambient temperature+3℃) and aT+4℃ (ambient temperature+4℃) were established to examine the growth response and seed yield of each cultivar. Seed yield showed a higher correlation with seed weight (r=0.713***) and an increase in temperature affected seed yield by reducing the single seed weight. In particular, the seed growth rate of the large-seed cultivar (Daechan) increased at high temperature, resulting in a reduction in the number of days for full maturity. Our results accordingly indicate that large-seed cultivar, such as Daechan, is potentially vulnerable to high temperature stress. The results of this study can be used as basic data in the development of cultivation technology to reduce the damage caused by elevated temperatures. Also, further research is required to evaluate the response of each process contributing to seed yield production under high temperatures.

      • Classification of maturity group in 100 Korea soybean varieties

        This study was carried out to classify Korean soybean varieties based maturity group. One hundred (100) domestic soybean varieties ( 56 for fermentation, 26 for sprouting, 17 for mixed with rice) were used and seeding date was scheduled at April 30. This experiment carried out at Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute, NICE situated at Miryang from 2005 to 2006. Classification of maturity group in 100 soybeans was followed by Kweon et al's method (1974) The main difference between this experiment and that of Kweon et al's method (1974) were the planting region and planting date. This experiment was conducted on April 30 at Miryang while Kweon et al. was conducted on May 23 in Seoul. Results of maturity grouping of Korean soybean varieties showed that Keunol, which was represented among 3 varieties, belonged to Group 0, Seonnok and Danmi in GroupⅡ, Shinrok in GroupⅢ, Seonyu, represented by 17 cultivars, in GroupⅣ, Taekwang, having 44 cultivars in GroupⅤ, Daewon, represented by 25 cultivars in GroupⅥ, and Kwangdu and Keumdu in GroupⅦ.

        Application of Perfluoropolymethylisopropyl Ether to Long Wearing Lipstick

        lt has been used chat fluorinated compounds could be applied to Make-up products. lt is that fluorinated compounds are hydropliobiciry, lipopliobiciry and lioinophobicitv. These fluorinated compounds are reported ro form a highly prorecrive and effective film againsr most aggressive chemical and physical agents. In this study we made a success to formulate the new type of lipstick using perfluoropolymerhylisopropylether (PPIH, MW- 650. commercial name - Fomblin HC/01 by Ausimont Co.) with low-molecular weight which is long wearing and comfortable (excellent) to use. This PPIE was adsorbed more than 90% in this experinient and formed the well-balanced gei nerworks even if the selected PP1E is 100% volutile ar room remperarure. On the basis of the adsorprion of FPIE, we developed rlie new type lipstick, whicli was highly-lip feeling and had long wearing and non coloration. And these cliaracreristics were verified by acrual consumer test.

        High incidence of subsequent re-operation following treatments for medial meniscus tears combined with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: second-look arthroscopic study

        Background: The Multicenter Orthopaedic Outcomes Network (MOON) group recently reported that medial meniscus (MM) repairs are associated with more frequent re-operations when compared to lateral meniscus (LM) repairs. The purpose of this study was to compare the meniscal healing and the incidence of subsequent reoperation of medial and lateral meniscal tears that occurred concurrently with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent second-look arthroscopy after primary ACL reconstruction (ACLR) between June 2005 to December 2016. The healing of meniscal tears following repair or left in situ, and re-tear following partial meniscectomy, were evaluated via second-look arthroscopy and compared between medial and lateral meniscus. Moreover, the incidence of subsequent meniscal re-operation after the index ACLR were investigated and compared between medial and lateral meniscus. Subsequent meniscal re-operation was performed in cases of the following three symptomatic meniscus tears: re-tears at the meniscectomy site; new tears; and failed healing of repaired or left in situ meniscus. Results: There were 148 meniscal tears in 121 patients at index ACLR. There were 62 MM tears, 38 LM tears, and 24 bilateral meniscus tears. At second-look arthroscopy, the “successful healing” rate for tears following repair was higher in LM tears (91.2%) compared to MM tears (80.0%), although it was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). No significant differences were observed in the healing of left in situ tears or re-tear of meniscectomy site between medial and lateral meniscus. Patients with MM tears combined with ACL injuries had a higher incidence of subsequent meniscal re-operation compared to patients with LM tears (25.6% vs 16.1%, p = 0.025). Conclusions: There was a trend for the successful healing rate to be higher in LM repairs than MM repairs. Subsequent meniscal re-operations after ACLR were more frequent in patients with medial meniscal tears concurrently with ACL injuries in comparison to patients with lateral meniscal tears.         Soybean Ecological Response and Seed Quality According to Altitude and Seeding Dates

        This experiment was carried out to examine ecological response and soybean quality as affected by environmental cultivation for producing high seed quality in domestic soybean variety. The results are as follows: Under equal cumulative temperature condition, soybean plants grown in Muju showed longer days to flowering, which was an effect of the long day-length on high latitudes, and longer duration of reproductive stage as a result of low temperature within that period. Considering apparent seed quality, 100 seed weight of soybeans grown in Muju was heavier than Miryang. Ratio of seed crack and disease-damaged seeds was lower in Muju, and these parameters decreases as planting was delayed. The protein contents did not show significant difference in terms of altitude and planting date, however, crude oil contents were higher in Miryang. An opposite trend was observed in C18:1 and C18:3. In the fatty acid composition, the proportion of C18:1 decreased as seeding date was delayed, and was higher in Miryang. Opposite observations were obtained from C18:3. The anthocyanin contents were highest on June 10 planting and higher in Muju than in Miryang. Isoflavone content was higher as seeding date was delayed and is similar accross seeding dates in Muju. As a summary, for high seed quality production the optimum planting date was June 10, and Muju was more suitable region than Miryang.

        An NMR Study on the Conformation of Substance P in Acidic Bicelles

        The conformation of a neuropeptide, substance P (SP), in isotropic (q = 0.5) acidic bicelles was investigated using two-dimensional NMR techniques. By the nuclear Overhauser effect (NOE) cross peaks between SP and long-chain lipid molecules SP was probed to bind on the flat surface of the disc-like bicelles. Structural analysis of NMR data indicated that the helical conformation of SP extended to the C-terminal region of Leu10 as well as in the mid-region from Pro4 to Phe8. As compared with the conformations of SP bound on the sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) or the dodecylphosphocholine (DPC) micelles with curved surfaces, the surface curvature of the membrane mimics was found to be one of the major factors inducing the biologically relevant conformation of SP. The negative surface charge of the membrane is also a key factor inducing both the binding of SP on the membrane and its biologically active structure.

      • Development of a Versatile Amplifier for Electrostatic Tactile Stimulation

        In this study, we developed an electrostatic tactile stimulator based on audio power amplifier. This stimulator consisted of a PC, amplifier, and power unit. PC generates stimulation parameters, which are stimulus waveform, frequency and time. The amplifier amplifies stimulation signal to evoke an electrostatic sensation. The power unit converts 220 VAC to 300 VDC to supply powers to an audio power amplifier. To verify the developed stimulator, we performed human perception experiments on the index finger with electro encephalogram (EEG). Also, perception responses were recorded in range of various frequencies (5-300 Hz). From the results, activation changes with different stimulation frequencies, and the event-related potential (ERP) of all subjects were measured after stimulation. Furthermore, stimulation parameters such as stimulation waveform, strength, and time were controlled easily without additional devices. Thus, it is widely used in various tactile sensations studies.

        Durability Properties of High Volume Mineral Admixture Cement Composite

        <P> Cement is used to make cement composite, produces a large amount of CO<SUB>2</SUB> (870 kg/ton) during manufacturing. Hence, an approach to effectively reduce CO<SUB>2</SUB> emissions in the concrete industry is to reduce the amount of cement by increasing the amount of a mineral admixture such as blast furnace slag powder or fly ash. Here, we optimized the high volume mineral admixture binder composition by investigating the strength properties of a cement mortar made using binders with various admixtures and inorganic stimulus agents. We used a cement composite mix with a water/binder ratio of 26 % or 46 % to evaluate the compressive strength and durability of the cement composite with increasing amounts of admixture. The cement composite mixture with an inorganic stimulus agent showed outstanding chloride penetration resistance over all curing times and a durability factor of 90 % or more to freezing and thawing. A higher carbonation resistance was found when increasing the curing time for the high volume mineral admixture compositions with an inorganic stimulus agent added due to faster curing, resulting in a dense inner concrete structure. Consequently, when using an inorganic stimulus agent with a sufficiently long curing period, high volumes of the admixture can be used to produce concrete with suitable properties for various applications. </P>
