Sarcopenia, characterized by the progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass and function, poses a growing public health concern, predominantly affecting the elderly. Recent research has illuminated the pivotal role of the gut-muscle axis in sarcopenia's pathogenesis, suggesting a complex interplay between gut microbiota, metabolic pathways, and muscle health. This review offers a comprehensive examination of the emerging evidence on the gut-muscle axis, delineating its impact on muscle physiology and the onset of sarcopenia. We explore the bidirectional communication between the gut microbiota and skeletal muscles, emphasizing how alterations in gut microbiota composition and functionality can influence muscle metabolism, inflammation, and protein synthesis. Furthermore, the review highlights the mechanistic pathways, including microbial metabolites and gut-derived signals, that modulate muscle homeostasis. We also discuss the age-related changes in the gut microbiota and their corresponding effects on muscle biology. In addition, this review critically evaluates current and potential therapeutic strategies targeting the gut-muscle axis. These include dietary interventions, probiotics, prebiotics, and fecal microbiota transplantation, focusing on their efficacy in modulating the gut microbiota composition and ameliorating sarcopenia symptoms. By integrating insights from various studies, this review underscores the gut-muscle axis as a novel and promising target for therapeutic interventions in sarcopenia, paving the way for future research and clinical applications in managing its age-related conditions.

Objectives: This study aimed to examine the frequency of convenience food consumption at convenience stores (CVS) and the CVS usage patterns of middle and high school students as well as to understand students’ attitude toward sodium and sugar reduction. Methods: We used an online questionnaire for data collection. The questionnaire comprised five distinct categories: general characteristics, CVS usage, frequency of consumption according to convenience food menus at CVS, attitude toward sodium and sugar reduction, and adherence to dietary guidelines. Results: A total of 75 students from Seoul (14 middle school students and 61 high school students) participated in the study. Most respondents visit CVS 3-5 times a week. CVS are predominantly used during weekdays, mostly during lunch, and dinner. The students mostly checked the caloric content and expiration date as food labeling information. The participants were aware of the need to reduce their sugar and sodium intake. Among frequent CVS convenience food consumers, there was an increased consideration of the need to reduce their sugar and sodium consumption, despite their actual selection of foods with high sugar and sodium content. Additionally, they did not check the sugar and sodium levels indicated in food labeling. Further, the dietary action guide from the Ministry of Health and Welfare were poorly followed by most students. Conclusions: There is a need for nutrition education specifically addressing the sugar and sodium content of the convenience foods predominantly consumed by students. Additionally, educating students with frequent convenience food consumption to actively check the sugar and sodium information on food labels could help promote healthier food choices.

The present study was conducted on the disc brake systems of urban railway vehicles to investigate the effects of braking temperature on squeal noise. A finite element method-based analytical model was constructed to predict the generation of squeal noise through the analysis of complex eigenvalues. The reliability of the analytical model was confirmed by verification with experimental results obtained from a test vehicle on an urban railway track in Korea. The braking temperature of the brake system was applied to the analytical model to analyze the effects of braking temperature on squeal noise. This article proposes a brake pad shape to reduce the impact of squeal noise caused by nonuniform contact between the brake disc and the brake pad due to braking temperature. The results from the present study can be used to reduce squeal noise further.
