The effect of modification of the surface of a La<SUB>0.9</SUB>Ca<SUB>0.1</SUB>FeO<SUB>3</SUB> (LCF) membrane by the addition of a porous layer with an infiltrated catalyst on oxygen flux through the membrane in a CO/air gradient was investigated. Membranes with Pt and CeO<SUB>2</SUB> catalysts on the fuel (CO) side and La<SUB>0.8</SUB>Sr<SUB>0.2</SUB>FeO<SUB>3</SUB> (LSF) on the air-side exhibited oxygen permeation fluxes that were 91, 28, and 5.8 times greater at 873K, 973K, and 1073K, respectively, compared to a membrane with unmodified surfaces. The relative contributions of the bulk (R<SUB>b</SUB>) and surface (R<SUB>s</SUB>) resistances to the total resistance to oxygen ion flow (R<SUB>tot</SUB>) were accessed by measuring the oxygen flux as a function of the membrane thickness. R<SUB>s</SUB> was found to dominate R<SUB>tot</SUB>, demonstrating the importance of the surface processes.

Rapid methods for the detection and clinical treatment of human norovirus (HuNoV) are needed to control foodborne disease outbreaks, but reliable techniques that are fast and sensitive enough to detect small amounts of HuNoV in food and aquatic environments are not yet available. We explore the interactions between HuNoV and concanavalin A (Con A), which could facilitate the development of a sensitive detection tool for HuNoV. Biophysical studies including hydrogen/deuterium exchange (HDX) mass spectrometry and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) revealed that when the metal coordinated region of Con A, which spans Asp16 to His24, is converted to nine alanine residues (mCon A<SUP>MCR</SUP>), the affinity for HuNoV (GII.4) diminishes, demonstrating that this Ca<SUP>2+</SUP> and Mn<SUP>2+</SUP> coordinated region is responsible for the observed virus-protein interaction. The mutated carbohydrate binding region of Con A (mCon A<SUP>CBR</SUP>) does not affect binding affinity significantly, indicating that MCR of Con A is a major region of interaction to HuNoV (GII.4). The results further contribute to the development of a HuNoV concentration tool, Con A-immobilized polyacrylate beads (Con A-PAB), for rapid detection of genotypes from genogroups I and II (GI and GII). This method offers many advantages over currently available methods, including a short concentration time. HuNov (GI and GII) can be detected in just 15 min with 90% recovery through Con A-PAB application. In addition, this method can be used over a wide range of pH values (pH 3.0 - 10.0). Overall, this rapid and sensitive detection of HuNoV (GI and GII) will aid in the prevention of virus transmission pathways, and the method developed here may have applicability for other foodborne viral infections.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In human skin, melanocytes and their neighboring keratinocytes have a close functional interrelationship. Keratinocytes, which represent the prevalent cell type of human skin, regulate melanocytes through various mechanisms. Here, we use a keratinocyte and melanoma co-culture system to show for the first time that keratinocytes regulate the cell surface expression of N-cadherin through cell-cell contact. Compared to mono-cultured human melanoma A375 cells, which expressed high levels of N-cadherin, those co-cultured with the HaCaT human keratinocyte cell line showed reduced levels of N-cadherin. This reduction was most evident in areas of A375 cells that underwent cell-cell contact with the HaCaT cells, whereas HaCaT cell-derived extracellular matrix and conditioned medium both failed to reduce N-cadherin levels. The intracellular level of calcium in co-cultured A375 cells was lower than that in mono-cultured A375 cells, and treatment with a cell-permeant calcium chelator (BAPTA) reduced the N-cadherin level of mono-cultured A375 cells. Furthermore, co-culture with HaCaT cells reduced the expression levels of transient receptor potential cation channel (TRPC) 1, −3 and −6 in A375 cells, and siRNA-mediated multi-depletion of TRPC1, -3 and -6 reduced the N-cadherin level in these cells. Taken together, these data suggest that keratinocytes negatively regulate the N-cadherin levels of melanoma cells via cell-to-cell contact-mediated calcium regulation.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Human keratinocyte cells reduce the N-cadherin levels of co-cultured melanoma cells. </LI> <LI> Cell-to-cell contact is necessary for this keratinocyte-mediated N-cadherin reduction. </LI> <LI> Keratinocytes reduce intracellular calcium in co-cultured melanoma cells. </LI> <LI> Keratinocytes reduce the expression of TRPCs in contacting melanoma cells. </LI> </UL> </P>

Objective: This paper provides validation of R6 elastic-plastic J-estimation methods, via elastic-plastic finite element analyses for circumferentially cracked pipes under combined mechanical and thermal loads. Materials method: In the FE analyses, the relative magnitudes of the mechanical and thermal loads, types of thermal loads, the crack sizes and material hardening are systematically varied. Loading sequence effects for the mechanical and thermal loads are also considered. The FE elastic-plastic J values are compared with those derived using R6 elastic-plastic J-estimation methods. Results: It is shown that there are significant load order effects on elastic-plastic J for large secondary stress cases, but these are conservatively estimated using newly proposed methods in R6.
Microwave spectrum, structure and dipole moment of 3-fluorophenylacetylene (3FPA)

The 6-18 GHz rotational spectrum of 3-fluorophenylacetylene (3FPA) was measured by chirped-pulse Fourier-transform microwave (CP-FTMW) spectroscopy. Rotational constants and quartic centrifugal distortion constants based on a Watson-A reduction were determined with 89 transitions; A = 3383.73821 (33) MHz, B = 1180.97617 (16) MHz, C = 875.26172 (12) MHz, Δ<SUB>J</SUB> = 0.0382 (13) kHz, Δ<SUB>K</SUB> = 1.316 (21) kHz, δ<SUB>J</SUB> = 13.93 (56) Hz, and δ<SUB>K</SUB> = 180.3 (60) Hz. An additional 12-13 transitions for each of eight <SUP>13</SUP>C isotopic species and Stark effects to determine dipole moment components were observed by Balle-Flygare FTMW spectroscopy. Gas phase molecular structures of 3FPA were derived via the least-square fitting (r<SUB>0</SUB>) and substitution (r<SUB>s</SUB>) methods using the moments of inertia of the isotopic species. The ring geometry is discussed and compared with previous studies of structures of monosubstituted benzene and crystalline solid structures of 3FPA.

Physicochemicah microbiological and sensory characteristics of chicken thighs and wings of foreign and domestic origin were investigated to provide the basic information of quality. In comparison of the proximate analysis of compositions among the same part of different origin, AT(American thigh meats) showed the highest content in the crude protein and ash. KBW(domestic wing meats produced at A company) showed the lowest moisture contents, and the highest protein contents (P $lt; 0.001). In color, KAT(domestic thigh meats purchased at Korean traditional market) showed higher a value than the others but the lowest pH value. AT and AW( American wing meats) had the highest TBA values and the lowest level of total aerobic bacteria. In the descriptive analysis for raw meat, KBT(domestic thigh meats produced at A company) was given the highest acceptability score(P $lt; 0.05). The cooked American thigh and wing meats obtained the highest score in off-flavor and the lowest score in acceptability.

The utilization of CO2 for production of solar fuels/chemicals is gaining increasing importance due to worldwide fossil-fuel shortage and global warming. As a means to achieve this, we herein report on the synthesis and development of a graphene-based visible light active photocatalyst (CCG-BODIPY) which is chemically converted graphene (CCG) covalently bonded to a light harvesting BODIPY molecule (1-picolylamine-2-aminophenyl-3-oxy-phenyl-4,4'-difluoro-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-2,6-diethyl-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene-triazine). The photocatalyst-biocatalyst coupled system developed using CCG-BODIPY as photocatalyst functions in a highly efficient manner, leading to high NADH regeneration (54.02 +/- 0.61%), followed by its consumption in exclusive formic acid production (144.2 +/- 1.8 mmol) from CO2. The present research endeavour highlights the development and application of a graphene based photocatalyst for direct solar fuel formation from carbon dioxide.
Inner Warm Disk of ESO H<i>α</i>279a Revealed by NA i and CO Overtone Emission Lines

<P>We present an analysis of near-infrared, high-resolution spectroscopy toward the flat-spectrum young stellar object (YSO) ESO H alpha 279a (similar to 1.5M(circle dot)) in the Serpens star-forming region at a distance of 429 pc. Using the Immersion GRating INfrared Spectrometer (IGRINS; R approximate to 45,000), we detect emission lines originating from the accretion channel flow, jet, and inner disk. Specifically, we identify hydrogen Brackett series recombination, [Fe II], [Fe III], [Fe IV], Ca I, Na I, H-2, H2O, and CO overtone emission lines. By modeling five bands of CO overtone emission lines and the symmetric double-peaked line profile for Na I emission lines, we find that ESO H alpha 279a has an actively accreting Keplerian disk. From our Keplerian disk model, we find that Na I emission lines originate between 0.04 and 1.00 au, while the CO overtone emission lines are from the outer part of the disk, in the range between 0.22 and 3.00 au. The model reveals that the neutral atomic Na gas is a good tracer of the innermost region of the actively accreting disk. We derive a mass accretion rate of 2-10 x 10-7 Me yr(-1). from the measured Br gamma emission luminosity of 1.78(+/- 0.31) x 10(31) erg s(-1).</P>
