        Children’s Rights, PTSD and Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap

        Although one of Agatha Christie’s most famous plays The Mousetrap has been loved and continually performed for close to three-quarters of a century, scholarly research on the play is limited. The lack of academic interest might be an inevitable devaluation of the play claiming sentimental popularity or the commercial orientation associated with the play. Despite these claims, Christie’s social commentary and awareness of messages about social issues are tangible. Like an imperceptible mousetrap, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can trap the mind of a person who has experienced trauma. When Agatha Christie published her play The Mousetrap in 1952, PTSD was called shell-shock and primarily associated with invisible war trauma. Today PTSD is also associated with other traumas such as child abuse. The application of PTSD to childhood trauma emphasizes the need for children’s rights legislation and competent mental health and social services for victims of childhood abuse symbolized in Christie’s play as three blind mice. This article aims to provide an empathetic understanding of the abstract concepts of PTSD and child abuse and focuses on putting a 21st-century face on the 1950s play by approaching it as a commentary on failed social services by focusing on elements of child protection as provided by child welfare systems, legal systems, and school systems. It connects the effects of PTSD in childhood trauma to the play’s plot and emphasizes the need for children’s rights legislation and competent mental health and social services for victims of childhood abuse today.

        The Business of Theatre in Caroline London: The Tamer Tamed and the King’s Men

        This paper delves into the relationships between the three divisions of the business of theatre associated with the 1633 King’s Men production of The Tamer Tamed. A connection between the revival and revision of Fletcher’s Jacobean text, The Tamer Tamed, and the preferences of the various types of audiences are shown as a reaction initiated by the playing troupe’s finances, stemming from a combination of public theatre performances, private theatre performances, and patronage. The moderating effect of censorship by the Master of Revels and the anti-Catholic leanings of London Puritans during Charles I’s reign are also interwoven into the discussion. To examine the business of theatre in this period, the roles of production, consumption, and supervision can be considered through the interactions of three distinct groups: producers (acting companies and playwrights), consumers (noble patrons and public audience), and supervisors (Master of Revels, court, and church).

        Two Wives in the Faded American Dream: Death of a Salesman and The Subject Was Roses

        Both Death of a Salesman and The Subject Was Roses are set in the post-war 1940s and present middle-aged homemakers in crisis. They each include representations of a generation of women who were caught in a fading American family dream from the perspectives of the late 1940s and the mid-1960s in America. Often the female wife character has been approached by playwrights and academics as a supporting role who is a housewife residing in the private space defined by family. She is often shown as a mentally unbalanced entity or the cause of a husband’s failure. Focusing on the private space of the housewife in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman(1949) and in Frank Gilroy’s The Subject Was Roses(1964), this article compares the wife characters from the two plays that were written fifteen years apart to demonstrate a cultural continuance of the exclusion of women from opportunities to obtain the American Dream through their own efforts and an emerging societal transition in the 1960s to the awakening awareness of a woman’s possibilities of personal achievement.

        골다공증이 있는 고령의 환자에서 Scarf 중족골 절골술을 이용한 무지 외반증의 치료

        Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the radiological and clinical outcomes of scarf osteotomy for hallux valgus (HV) deformity in elderly patient with osteoporosis. Materials and Methods: A total of 58 elderly patients (mean age, 72.6 years) underwent scarf osteotomy for HV deformity between 2008 and 2015. The mean follow-up period was 24.4 months. Of the 58 patients, 42 were diagnosed with osteoporosis and 16 were diagnosed as normal. The radiological and clinical outcomes were assessed preoperatively, postoperatively, and at final follow-up, including HV angle, intermetatarsal (IM) angle, American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score, patient satisfaction, visual analogue scale (VAS), and complication. Results: There was no significant difference in HV angle and IM angle between the osteoporosis group and normal bone mineral densitometry group at all time points, preoperative, postoperative, and final follow-up. Moreover, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups with respect to the AOFAS score and VAS evaluations. In the osteoporosis group, the mean HV angle improved from $36.7^{\circ}$ preoperatively to $11.3^{\circ}$ at the time of final follow-up, and the mean IM angle improved from $13.2^{\circ}$ to $5.7^{\circ}$. The mean AOFAS score improved from 52.6 preoperatively to 89.1 at the time of final follow-up. With respect to satisfaction, 83.4% of patients were very satisfied or satisfied. There were no serious complications, and all cases showed complete union at the osteotomy site. Conclusion: We believed that scarf osteotomy is a safe, effective procedure for the correction of elderly patients with osteoporosis.

        CSB (Confined Socket Bolt) 전단연결재의 전단 성능 평가

        This study evaluated a shear capacity of confined socket-bolt (CSB) shear connector developed for utilizing cast in placed pile (CIP) as apermanent underground wall. The push-out tests were performed in the specimens with different CIP types, CSB shear connector types, , andconcrete compressive strengths of concrete pile, and with or without waterproofing at interfaces between CIP and underground wall. Test results showedthat the specimens with a H-shaped pile were fractured in the CSB shear connector, while the fracture concentrated in the concrete part of the specimenswith a reinforced concrete pile was alleviated as the compressive strength of the concrete pile increased, resulting in the severe fracture of CSB shearconnector. The maximum shear capacities of the specimens with high strength bolts and reinforcing bars used as CSB shear connector were approximately1.22 and 1.20 times higher than those of the specimens with a H-shaped pile, respectively, and 1.10 and 1.16 times higher than those of the specimenswith a reinforced concrete pile, respectively. Meanwhile, the maximum shear capacity was not significantly affected by the embedding length of theCSB shear connector and overlapping length of reinforcing bar. The predicted shear capacities calculated from the KDS standards were lower thanthe measured values of all specimens tested in this study. 이 연구에서는 흙막이용 CIP(cast in placed pile)를 영구적인 지하외벽으로 활용하기 위해 제시한 CSB(confined socket bolt) 전단연결재의 전단 성능을 평가하였다. CSB 전단 성능 평가를 위한 푸쉬아웃(push-out) 실험의 주요 변수는 CIP의 종류, CSB 전단연결재 종류, ,무근 콘크리트, 방수재 및 철근콘크리트 말뚝의 압축강도로 설정하였다. 실험결과, H-형강 말뚝 실험체들의 파괴모드는 모두 CSB 전단연결재파단에 의해 지배되었다. 철근콘크리트 말뚝 실험체들의 파괴모드는 철근콘크리트 말뚝의 압축강도가 증가할수록 콘크리트의 파괴보다 CSB 전단연결재의 파단에 의해 지배되었다. 고강도 볼트 및 이형철근의 CSB 전단연결재 실험체의 최대 내력은 일반강도 볼트의 CSB 전단연결재 실험체에비해 H-형강 말뚝의 경우 약 1.22배 및 1.20배 높았으며, 철근콘크리트 말뚝의 경우 약 1.10배 및 1.16배 높았다. 그리고 푸쉬아웃 실험에서 최대 내력은 CSB 전단연결재의 길이 및 철근 중첩에 대한 영향이 미미하였다. KDS 기준에 의해 산정된 전단내력은 실험결과를 안전측으로 평가하였다.

        A Korean Farcical Reconstruction of Hamlet’s Story: Hamlet Cantabile

        In 2015, The Asian Shakespeare Intercultural Archive was established. The archive is supported by several government and academic institutions, as well as contributions from East and Southeast Asian theatre companies. The purpose of the archive is to provide educational and research resources for intercultural and Shakespeare performances. The Asian Shakespeare Intercultural Archive website currently provides information on over 62 productions in East and Southeast Asia, with plans to add productions in the future. The initiatives sponsored by the Asian Shakespeare Intercultural Archive are directed by teams of international scholars, practitioners, translators, and technical staff. Hamlet Cantabile is among the productions archived on the website for the Asian Shakespeare Intercultural Archive. The project emphasizes the production and the educational resources available on the website for the Asian Shakespeare Intercultural Archive. The production centered on a Korean adaptation of Hamlet by Willliam Shakespeare written and performed by director Bae Yosup and the Tuida Performance Group. As the term cantabile suggests, Tuida’s Hamlet Cantabile presented a novel interpretation of Shakespeare’s tragedy as a najang or farcical tale told by comedians in an easy-flowing manner. This study focuses on the Korean nanjang style of storytelling employed by a troupe of clowns contemplating the tragic events of Hamlet’s life. The distinct acting style of Performance Group Tuida using movement as mediation (communication), voice work (using full voice), uncanny melodies, puppets, and masks, brings the familiar Shakespeare tragedy with a Korean flavor. This study examines how Tuida incorporated past and present Korean culture into the Shakespeare inspired production by concentrating on the highlights from the production and the educational resources available on the website for the Asian Shakespeare Intercultural Archive. Spirituality, nanjang, and puppetry are the three most prominent topics highlighted.
