Potential Role of Sirtuin as a Therapeutic Target for Neurodegenerative Diseases
2009 Journal of Clinical Neurology Vol.5 No.3
The sirtuins (SIRTs) are protein-modifying enzymes that are distributed ubiquitously in all organisms. SIRT1 is a mammalian homologue of yeast nicotinamide-adenine-dinucleotide-dependent deacetylase silent information regulator 2 (known as Sir2), which is the best-characterized SIRT family member. It regulates longevity in several model organisms and is involved in several processes in mammalian cells including cell survival, differentiation, and metabolism. SIRT1 induction, either by SIRT-activating compounds such as resveratrol, or metabolic conditioning associated with caloric restriction, could have neuroprotective qualities and thus delay the neurodegenerative process, thereby promoting longevity. However, the precise mechanistic liaison between the activation of SIRT and extended healthy aging or delaying agerelated diseases in humans has yet to be established.
Vol.11 No.1
Crossed aphasia refers to disturbance of language following a right hemisphere lesion in right handed individuals.Although it is estimated to occur in 1% to 2% of all dextral aphasic, well documented cases of crossed aphasia continue to be rare. Moreover, it is also rare to see a Gerstmann's syndrome (left-right disorientation, finger agnosia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia) in right hemispheric lesion. In this paper, the author presents one case of crossed aphasia associated with Gerstmann syndrome in monolingual right handed patient. This case is found interesting to be reported because it is a extremely rare condition where a crossed aphasia and a Gerstmann syndrome are simultaneously seen in the same patient.
Vol.37 No.2
Air pollution is a growing global health concern estimated to contribute to as many as 4.2 million premature deaths worldwide per year. So it poses the greatest environmental risk to human health. A strong and rapidly expanding body of evidence links ambient air pollution to respiratory and cardiovascular conditions that eventually may also affect cognition in the elderly. Among various ambient air pollutants, particulate matter (PM) has been implicated as a chronic source of neuroinflammation and reactive oxygen species that produce neuropathology resulting in neurodevelopmental disorders and neurodegenerative disease. The current review will briefly discuss the clinical features and underlying mechanism of PM induced cognitive dysfunction, more specifically, dementia.
