지식의 `민주화`와 `문학사회학`의 등장 - 김현의 문학사회학과 『뿌리깊은 나무』의 연관성 -

오늘날 김현은 『문학과 지성』과 함께 기억되고 있지만, 이와 같은 기억은 `문예지`와 `종합지`를 자유롭게 넘나들었던 김현의 실제 활동에 미치지 못한다. 김현은 『뿌리깊은 나무』의 `한글 사용 방침`과 일치하는 한글관을 가지고 있었다. 『뿌리깊은 나무』는 한자어를 최대한 배제하고, (순우리말인) `한글`로 고치는 작업을 지속했고, 그것은 적절한 “토박이말” 용어를 찾아 번역하는 작업으로, `지식의 민주화`를 꾀했다. 김현 역시 한글 전용이 곧 `민주주의의 진전`이라 의미화하는 것은 마찬가지였다. 그러나 한글과 달리, `대중 문화`의 경우에는 `민주화`에의 기대와 `상품화`에의 우려라는 양가적 시선이 혼재되어 있었다. 『뿌리깊은 나무』는 스스로 `대중 매체`임을 자임했지만, 김현은 그에 동조하면서도 한편으론 문화계 내의 `상업주의의 침투`에 저항해야 한다고 주장했다. 김현의 이 모순에는, 기실 문학의 상품화 현상이 역사적이며 일시적인 것이라는 인식이 깔려 있다. 김현은 언젠가 문학상품화가 극복될 것이라 생각했지만, 한편으로는 현재의 문학 개념으로는 이를 설명할 수 없다고 생각해 매체론적 접근을 시도했다. 이와 같은 새로운 시도에는 1970년대의 여러 사회 현상들의 복합적 관계망을 제시하는 매체였던 『뿌리깊은 나무』가 유리했다 Today, We remember Kim Hyun with Munji(the Literature and Intelligence) but this memory is inferior to his real activities which were not only in literature magazines but also in all-around magazines. Kim Hyun`s aspect to `Hangeul` and the one of Deep Rooted Tree coincided. Deep Rooted Tree kept excluding Chinese writings in their columns as possible and changing the words to native Korean words. The translation of Deep Rooted Tree tried to promote `democratization of knowledge.` Kim Hyun also thought that using `Hangeul` could be enhancement of democracy, but about the mass culture, it is not easy to be justified. There are ambivalent stances to mass culture, the one is that it contributes to `democratization` and the other is worried about its commercialization phenomenon. Deep Rooted Tree fancied itself as one of mass media, and Kim Hyun agreeing about that on the other hand arguing to fight against commercialism. This contraction of Kim Hyun was set in thought that commercialization of literature is historical and temporary. Kim Hyun thought the commercialization of literature will be end someday but, the existing concept of literature could not handle the situation. This is why he used the theory of intermedia for explaining the literature. That was good for him Deep Rooted Tree is an all-around magazine which has advantages to understanding multiplex relationship about social phenomenons.

4월혁명과 세대론적 기획 : 1960년대 초 소설 속 남성 젠더 수행을 중심으로

이 글은 1960년대 초 ‘4월혁명’을 제재로 한 소설들과 동인지 『산문시대』를 대상으로, 혁명을 수행한 (혹은 그렇게 간주된) 남성 주체의 젠더 수행이 세대론적 전략에 의해 활용되는 방식을 분석했다. 혁명의 주체가 남성으로 상상되었다면 서사논리가 그것을 어떻게 정당화하고 있는지 밝혀야 4·19세대의 세대성이 규명될 수 있기 때문이다. 1960년대 초 소설에서는 ‘4·19세대’의 선행세대가 혁명을 그려내면서 기성세대를 초점인물로 삼을 경우에는 혁명을 경제적 무능력에서 비롯한 권태라는 심리적 계기에 한정해 다루어 공적 질서의 변동에 상대적으로 무관심했으며, 반면 대학생인 4·19세대를 초점화해 형상화할 때는 세대 간 갈등을 누그러뜨리고 연대를 시도했다. 그러나 4·19세대를 포섭하고자 하는 기성세대의 기획이 성공적이었다고 평가하기는 어렵다. 왜냐하면 『산문시대』에 나타난 것처럼 4·19세대는 기성세대를 거부하겠다고 선언해 자신들의 정체성을 확립하고 있기 때문이다. 기성세대가 이미 4·19세대의 출현을 요청하고 예비했기에, 이를 거부하는 4·19세대의 선언은 자신들의 문학사적 위상을 보다 공고히 하는 한편, 그 위상을 가능하게 했던 문학적 조건을 오히려 은폐하는 결과를 가져왔다. This paper aims to analyze how the generation identifying projects take advantage of male gender performance of subjects who did (or were regarded to) lead the April Revolution in early 1960’s fictions. If the subjects leading the April Revolution had been imagined as male gender, it can be explained that characteristics of ‘4·19generation’ by investigating the logic of narrative of fictions justifying male subjects. In the case that elder generation who had focused themselves described the revolution as the psychological opportunity for male characters, however in the case they had focused 4·19 generation, they regarded the conflict between generations as the fight between the father and the son, that made the conflict less serious. It made they try to band together 4·19 generation in their fictions, but that is not always successful. Because The Prose Age tells us 4·19 generation stated to reject to the elder generation and strengthen their identification. Although the elder generation request and prepare for the 4·19 generation, the rejection by 4·19 generation made themselves higher in literary history and hid the condition of their hegemony.
