When free-ranging birds are accidentally killed or die, there may be greater potential for their associated ticks to detach, seek alternate hosts, and become established. We examined 711 carcasses of 95 avian species for ticks at a stopover island of migratory birds in the Republic of Korea where only Ixodes nipponensis and I. persulcatus were previously reported from local mammals and vegetation. A total of 16 ticks, I. turdus and Haemaphysalis flava, were collected from 8 fresh carcasses belonging to 5 avian species. Despite their known abundance on migratory birds and mainland Korea, these species had not colonized the isolated insular ecosystem possibly due to the low abundance and diversity of local hosts. The results imply that increasing human impact, such as the anthropogenic mortality of migratory birds and the introduction of non-native mammalian hosts, will increase the potential invasion and colonization risk of ticks. This finding also suggests that tick surveillance consisting of fresh carcasses of dead migratory birds may provide additional information, often ignored in surveillance of ticks on live birds, for the potential introduction of non-native ticks and associated pathogens affecting animal and human health.
Anti-haemolytic, anti-cytotoxicity and anti-inflammatory activities of sulfated alginates
최창용,최수경,최동현,나재운 한국공업화학회 2014 한국공업화학회 연구논문 초록집 Vol.2014 No.1
Sulfated alginate were prepared from native alginate have been shown to exhibit a variety of biological activities. We prepared sulfated alginates using different molecular weight alginates as well as by varying sulfur feeding ratio. Increase in sulfation was confirmed with FT-IR, Proton NMR, ICP-AES, EA and GPC techniques. Four samples such as HMWF (high molecular weight fucoidan), S-LLMWA-4.0(sulfated low molecular weight alginate), LLMWA(very low molecular weight alginate) and LLMWF(very low molecular weight fucoidan) showed non-haemolytic and non-cytotoxicity activities. Thus results indicate that prepared sulfated alginate can be applied for any clinical applications.
An Empirical Study on Unemployment and Life Satisfaction of 26 Transition Countries
최창용,우혜영 국제개발협력학회 2019 국제개발협력연구 Vol.11 No.3
Purpose: Utilizing three waves of the Life in Transition Survey (LiTS) conducted in 2006, 2010, and 2016, this study investigates the correlation between unemployment and life satisfaction in 26 post-socialist countries. Originality: This research contributes to the previous literature by considering the context of transition countries. The result gives evident of the socialist legacy in the life satisfaction of their citizens in regards of unemployment. Methodology: We regressed life satisfaction on its determinants such as macroeconomic variables, individual social characteristics, and public service satisfaction. We also applied country and year fixed effects to address common time trends across 26 countries. Result: First, the nonpecuniary mental cost (a cost from non-monetary pressure) is larger than the pecuniary cost (a mental cost comes from loss of income) to an unemployed person. However, at the societal level, the ratio between pecuniary and nonpecuniary costs is reversed. Second, during the economic recession in 2010, the psychological loss decreased in these countries. Third, we found that the quality of public service in everyday life can be helpful to mitigate the detrimental impact of unemployment, especially for the low- and middle-income groups. Conclusion and Implication: The subjective well-being cost of unemployment should be understood in the context of socio-economic change in the society. In transition countries, policies to enhance the everyday public service quality for wide range of citizens, including elderlies and females, are needed to reduce the detrimental effect of unemployment.
체제전환국 대상 지식공유사업(KSP) 분석과 개발협력 시사점
최창용,이미연,백진영 국제개발협력학회 2020 국제개발협력연구 Vol.12 No.2
Purpose: This study analyzes the main contents and characteristics of the Knowledge Sharing Proprams executed for the transition countries since 2004. Originality: The KSP project is evolving into a development cooperation project for establishing medium- and long-term economic cooperation and mutually sustainable development with partner countries while emphasizing the importance of knowledge sharing and system. In this regard, this research is meaningful in exploring the theoretical and practical implications of the KSP project. Methodology: The KSP has provided more than 400 policy consultation projects such as institution and governance systems and capacity development projects for the transition countries. This study conducted an analysis those policy projects since 2004 by policy demand area and cooperation strategy depending on their development stage, factor driven, efficiency driven and innovation driven economy. Result: Policy advisory strategies in line with the development stage are assessed to have contributed to the establishment of the public management system of the target countries. development is required with customized policy advice that actively reflects the policy demand of the target countries. On top of that, it is necessary to come up with more objective evaluation criteria on the effectiveness of policy advice on top of the customized policy consultations responding to demands from the client countries. Conclusions and Implication: The experience of the KSP project for the countries that have shifted from socialist planned economy to open market economy is used as a development cooperation model to predict development demand in advance, strengthen the capacity of bureaucrats and policy-making groups. It is expected that the KSP will be utilized for North Korea when economics development cooperation for North Korea is realized.
