Carboxymethyl chitin(CM-chitin) was prepared by the reaction of alkali chitin with monochloroacetic acid in isopropyl alcohol. According to the pH variation, the adsorptivity of this chelating polymer to the alkali-earth metal ions such as Ca^(2+), Mg^(2+), Sr^(2+), Ba^(2+) ions was determined by batch method. The adsorption tendency of this chelating polymer to most metal ions was increased with the increase of pH. The highest degree of adsorption was observed toward Ca^(2+) ion among the alkali-earth metal ions. The selective adsorption property toward Ca^(2+) ion was examined in the mixed solution of Ca^(2+) and Mg^(2+) ions, and it was observed that CM-chitin showed excellent selectivity to Ca^(2+) ion than Mg^(2+) ion. Mg^(2+) ion bound to CM-chitin was released from CM-chitin molecule in the presence of Ca^(2+) ion owing to low equilibrium constant. In the adsorption experiment of Ca^(2+) and Mg^(2+) ions to the CM-chitin under coexistence of Na^+ and K^+ ions, it was observed that adsorptivity of only Ca^(2+) ion was not affected by these monovalent cations.
N - alkyl - n - acyl glucamines 의 합성에 관한 연구

The easily biodegradable nonionic surfactant of glucamide(N-alkyl-N-acyl glucamine) was synthesized by the two-step reaction. The first step was the amination between alkylamine and glucose in methanol. Then, alkyl glucamines were obtained by reduction using Ni catalyst under the high pressure with 86∼93% of reaction yield. The second step was the synthesis of glucamide from alkyl glucamine and fatty acid methyl ester in methanol under the alkali catalytic condition while refluxing the solvent. The reaction yield of this step was 84∼95% except the benzyl glucamine, which the reaction yield was 50∼70%. The molecular structure of four kinds of alkyl glucamine and 16 kinds of glucamide with different alkyl and acyl groups was studied by IR, MS and NMR.
N - Dodecanoyl , N - Methyl Glucamine ( GL-12 ) 과 음이온 계면활성제 혼합물의 상승효과에 관한 연구

Synergistic effects of GL-12/LAS and GL-12/SLES mixtures were studied by the measurements of surface tension, cmc and foaming ability of these systems at various mixing ratios. The composition of each surfactant at the air/water interface and in micelles was calculated based on the regular solution theory to find out the distribution of surfactants when they were mixed. The kinds and degree of interaction between the different surfactant molecules were explained through the β-parameter. In both GL-12/LAS and GL-12/SLES mixtures, GL-12 showed greater tendency for the adsorption at air/water interface and less tendency for the formation of mixed micelles in the solution compared to LAS or SLES. The foaming ability of solution was maximum when the molecular ratio of GL-12 to LAS or SLES at the air/water interface was 3:1. These results were explained based on the hexagonal packing model of surfactant molecules at the interface.

Alkyl polyglucosides (APG), so called natural nonionic surfactants, are prepared with glucose from corn starch and fatty alcohol from palm and/or coconut oil. When we studied on interfacial properties of APG, surface and interfacial tension, cmc, foaming and effectiveness, according to degree of polymerization of glucose unit (D.P.=1.2∼1.8) and alkyl chain length, the former hardly affects but the latter greatly affects on them. The order of detergency for fatty acid soils decreased as followings ; APG 0814 > APG 1214 > APG 10 > APG 0810 > APG 08, and the samples with lowest interfacial tension and maximum adsorption had a better detergency.
Chitosan 부분가수분해물과 PALA 와의 가교체의 담즙산염 흡착성에 관한 연구

Chitosan is the deacetylation product of chitin. Its binding with bile salt in intestine is reported to cause the lowering concentration of cholesterol in serum. In order to increase the bind with bile salt, chitosan was modified as follow. Hydrolyzed chitosan mixture were obtained by enzymatic hydrolysis with trichoderma reesei, and then Fraction C of them was crosslinked with polyallylamine (Mw=50,000) by glutaraldehyde. The weight percents of nitrogen of crosslinked polymers are 9.87% for Resin I, 9.34% for Resin II, 8.10% for Resin III. After cholic acid sodium salt and deoxycholic acid sodium salt were dissolved in tris (hydroxymethyl) aminomethane buffer (pH 7.5) respectively, Resin I, II, III were incubated in the solution for 1hr. As a result, Resin I, II, Ill were improved than chitosan itself. Especially Resin II exhibited the best binding result than other resin.

The solubilizing capacity of GL-12, LAS, SLES aqueous solutions and that of mixed surfactant systems were studied using sudan III, which is oil-siluble dye. The solubilizing capacity of mixed surfactant systems was greatly influenced by the mixing ratios. Generally, the solubilizing capacity increased as the composition of GL-12 in the mixed systems increased. From the effect of NaCl on the solubilizing capacity, it was found that the solubilizate is located near the palisade layer in the GL-12/LAS system, and the solubilizate is located inside the micellar core in the GL-12/SLES mixed system. These differences in the location of solubilizate inside micelles result from the difference of molecular structure between LAS and SLES.
4차 Ammonium 기를 가진 새로운 수용성 Chitosan 유도체의 제조 및 이들의 응집거동에 관한 연구

N-methyl, N-butyl and N,N-dibutyl chitosan derivatives were prepared by Schiff`s base formation and hydrogenation in aqueous media. Furthermore quaternization of the chitosan derivatives was performed in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone using methyl iodide to obtain water soluble cationic polyelectrolytes. It was confirmed that O-alkylation was occured as well as selective N-alkylation in these reactions. Chitosan and chitosan derivatives with quaternary ammonium iodide showed high flocculation power as the cationic flocculant. When tested on paper mill waste water, they showed high flocculation power, independing of pH range. The flocculation power was increased as the N-alkyl chain length was increased. Among them, N-butyl dimethyl chitosan ammonium iodide showed better flocculation power than chitosan. But, N,N-dibutyl-N-methyl chitosan ammonium iodide showed less flocculation power than chitosan itself.
