Anomalous positions of thc gallbladder are infrequent radiographic and surgical findings. The left-sided gallbladder in the absence of situs inversus is one of the rarest anomaly of this organ. The pre-operative diagnosis may be difficult to establish radiographically because unusual gallbladder orientations are not common and the relationship to the liver is often indeterminable. The authors experienced a case of left sided gallbladder and present the case with brief review of the literatures.

Paragangliomas are rare tumors that arise from the extraadrenal chromaffin cells. We report here on a case of retroperitoneal paraganglioma in a 24-year-old young man. Abdomen CT and magnetic resonance imaging showed a hypervascular mass near the left ureter. He had not felt paroxysmal palpitation and his vital signs were within the normal range. An exploratory laparotomy revealed a 7.2×5.5 cm sized mass below the jejunum and near the aorta, and this mass had adhesion to the left ureter. It was histologically diagnosed with a paraganglioma after the surgical resection. Although there was an increase of blood pressure on palpation during surgery, the postoperative course was uneventful. When we consider the unusual locations and the associated operative risk, we should take care to rule out the possibility of a functional paraganglioma in the preoperative differential diagnosis of an abdominal mass.

Objectives: The epidermal growth factor receptor(EGFR) family has been increasingly recognized as an important component in the control of normal cell proliferation and the pathogenesis of cancer. To confirm the usefulness of epidermal growth factor receptor as a tumor marker, we initiated this study. Materials and Methods: EGFR was measured by immunohistochemical staining using EGFR antibody. It was performed on section from paraffin blocks of 65 thyroid tissue including 33 paillary carcinoma, 11 follicular carcinoma, 11 nodular hyperplasia, 5 follicular adenoma and 5 normal thyroid tissue. We evaluated morphologic characteristic of various thyroid neoplasms, and the relationship between EGFR and other prognostic factors in papillary thyroid carcinomas. Results: The expression of EGFR was commonly found in neoplasms of thyroid, with trend for stronger staining in the more malignant tumor(p=0.000). Also the expression of EGFR in papillary thyroid cancer related to tumor characters including tumor size(p=0.042), extent(p=0.024) and prognostic features including AMES scores(p=0.019). The strong EGFR staining in papillary carcinoma was significantly associated with tumor recurrence(p=0.003). Conclusions: EGFR may have a role in the regulation of normal and neoplastic thyroid cell growth. EGFR status may help predict the clinical course of patients with malignant thyroid neoplasms. However, the study of more cases will be needed for significance of the information about the EGFR as an independent prognostic factor.

Purpose: We examined the expressions of claudin-4 and E-cadherin, which are known as cell adhesion-associated proteins, in stomach cancer. The relationship of their expression with the clinicopathologic factors was examined to investigate the roles of these proteins in the invasion or metastasis of stomach adenocarcinoma. Methods: The expressions of claudin-4 and E-cadherin were examined in 73 cases of adenocarcinoma of the stomach by performing immunohistochemical staining. Results: The expressions of claudin-4 and E-cadherin in the stomach adenocarcinoma were both correlated with the histologic grade, the T-stage and nodal metastasis, respectively (P<0.05). The expression of claudin-4 was significantly associated with the expression of E-cadherin. Conclusion: Our data suggests that claudin-4 and E-cadherin are involved in the processes of histologic differentiation, invasion and metastasis of stomach adenocarcinoma.
