Vol.30 No.-
In this study, for the self-portraits of the poets in the poetry literature in modern Korea, it was investigated that the certain elements of `self-portrait writing` exert a healing power and how the principle of healing works concretely. The poems quoted for discussing in this study are the self-portraits of Rho Cheonmyeong, Seo Jeongju, Yun Dongjoo, Han Hawoon, Park Yongrai, Choi Seungja, Lee Suyik, Lim Yeongjo, Lee Kyunglim, Shin Hyunlim and Park Doojin. The discussion is summarized as follows. When they try to establish the identity of themselves and discover their own significance of a being by reflecting who they are, how they are doing, and what they are doing, people, especially the youths, are apt to recognize themselves in comparison with the their own ideal characters. At this time, writing a poem helps them in organizing the confusing emotion and cognition and makes them observe themselves at a distance. In `self-portrait writing`, it is a start of healing to confess the key feelings which are accompanied when one faces one`s own problems through the self-confessing discourse. The principle of healing working at this time is catharsis. Although the concept of catharsis is being understood as a therapy effect, a kind of side effect rather than a meaning of a positive therapy activity in literary therapy now, the catharsis which is made in writing poems is a therapy activity of positive character. By letting out the inner feeling which has been repressed and not been expressed, one has a healing effect that one releases the anxiety and regains the stability. When using a metaphorical discourse through a metaphor and image, a poet comes to experience the sympathy with another being who has the same identity as his or hers. Meanwhile, though the metaphor has been known as a useful tool in empathizing with cognition and emotion aroused by a poem while a reader reads it, only when a poet experiences the sympathy between himself or herself and the world before the relationship with a reader, he or she can embody the experience as the metaphor. Therefore, creating the metaphor by discovering the identity between oneself and the world means that the sympathy works between the inner side of oneself and the world. The sympathy is a useful principle of healing which can solve a problem of personal identification, the discovery of self and that of identity as the integration of self and the world. In self-portrait writing, the principle that self-confessing discourse and metaphorical one interact and lead to the deep reflection on the self is insight and integration. When one imparts a meaning to pain and scar, and discontent and sadness, though one can`t change the situation of one`s own, however, one comes to gain an insight into the positive side of the situation newly, which changes the prospective of oneself. What makes the existing experience reinterpret is a key of all therapies. As the insight which is gained writing a poem is an emotional one which is followed by an emotional response rather than an intellectual insight which is understood with a simple mind, it can be said that its power to draw a change in attitude is bigger. If one discovers a positive meaning dwelt in oneself or comes to reinterpret the negative experience and situation of one`s own through insight, one comes to reach the integrative self acceptance that one recognizes and accepts oneself as it is.
