全寅初 연세대학교 대학원 1977 延世論叢 Vol.14 No.1
In this article, Chinese myth was treated as an origin of Chinese Fiction. In connection with this idea, some attempt has been made to systemize the fiction of ancient China. For this purpose, the investigator has studied the aspect of linking moths and novels in chronological order, from Lu Hsu¨n's Brief History of Chinese Fiction to the present. And then some attempt has been made to establish the relationship between myths, legends, and novels, and their concepts. Next step was to clarify the contents of myths which could be regarded as an origin of the fiction which could be considered as a representative work of myths. Such representative work of myths is Shan Hai Ching, Mu Tien Tzu Chuan and The Ch'u Elegies and the myths of Ch'u, the last of which was subdivided into Heaven and Earth, Nature, spooks, and the myths of heroes. In classifying Chinese myths according to their contents, no systematic classification has been done so far. Therefore, even in such works as Shen An-ping's Alphabet of Chinese Myths, Yuan Kha's Ancient Myths of China, Mori Yasu Taro's Study of Ancient Chinese Myths, no mention has been made in this connection. This may be because of the fact that Chinese myths have not been studied too long, and that no scholars have attempted arrangement and classification of myths in connection with fiction. It does not mean that nobody has attempted in this endeavor. For one, Chang Kwang Chih's Classification of Shang and Chou Myths could be cited. In this article, he made a systematic classification. Although aware of other efforts in this direction, the research has attempted the classification into three categories: The Myth of Creation of Heaven and Earth, the Myth of Creation of all things, arid the Myths Of the Heroes. The rationale for this classification is that even the myths, which are human creations, are created from the creation of the cosmos, that all things are created based upon this foundation, and that all these things are at the mercy of the heroes. These contents of the myths are the common factors. In conclusion, it is difficult to clarify the points when an origin or a source of a thing is to be clarified. It is the conjecture of the researcher that the creation of myths is a means to explain the cosmos, heaven and earth, all things, and even the existence of human beings. Therefore, the more developed the myth is, the more humanized it is. A lot of studies have been made in terms of history or cultural anthropology, but a shortage of studios have been found in terms of literary understanding. The ancient myth of China is suitable for being an origin of fiction, as is indicated in this article. This is a concrete attempt and thesis that Chinese myths could be understood from the point of view of the history of fiction.
