Relationship between pollution and occurrence of particular group of yeast in Han River has not been investigated so far. In order to find a correlation between the degree of pollution and appearance of certain yeasts in the water, aquatic yeasts were isolated and the quality of the water was analayzed. The data of the analysis were compared statistically with the yeast flora. The following results were obtained: 1) Candida guilliermondii, Candida intermedia, Candida parapsilosis, Candida tropicalis, Hansenula anomala, Rhodotorula glutinis, Rhodotorula mucilaginosa, Rhodotorula texensis, Rhodotorula pallida, Torulopsis candida, Trichosporon cutaneum and Trichosporon pullulans were found. 2) A comparative analysis of water quality and the number of isolated yeasts showed that Candida parapsilosis, Candida tropicalis, Rhodotorula mucilaginosa and Rhodotorula texensis can be the index species for the pollution caused by domestic sewage and fecal disposals. 3) The analysis also showed that Candida parapsilosis and Candida tropicalis can be the index strains indicating the pollution caused by ammonia-nitrogen (NH₃-N), normal bacteria (Nor. bac.), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), fecal coli form, albuminoid-nitrogen (Alb-N), dissolved oxygen (DO), chloride (Cl^-) and coli form group (Col. form G.). The appearance of Candida parapsilosis, Candida tropicalis, Rhodotorula mucilaginosa and Rhodotorula texensis in the water is indicative of the high degree of BOD, Nor. bac., NH₃-N and Alb-N. Also, the occurrance of Candida parapsilosis and Candida tropicalis can be an index of the high value of DO, Cl^- and Col. form group. The abandance of fecal coli form is correlated with the appearance of three species, namely Candida porapsilosis, Candida tropicalis and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa. 4) It is considered that these yeasts isolated from the water can be utilized as the index species of yeasts for the pollution control of Han River.
