Vol.- No.63

The purpose of this study is based on buddhist philosophy, studies in the relationship between love and buddhist practice from Kim Dongri’s 〈Won wang saeng ga〉 and Shen Congwen’s 〈Shan tuo〉, and how the novels reflect human’s desire in Nirvana. The second chapter studies the conflict relationship between love and practice from the “Buddhist philosophy and religious precept breaking”structure in these two novels, around the sensual desire and evil behavior. In which the sensitive appetite and evil respectively correspond to the ‘love from desire’ and ‘karma’ from the buddhist practice. First of all, taking the woman’s debut as an opportunity, the heroes of the two novels, respectively, was seized with a desire for the eyes, the body and some other object of the sense organs. Although in contrast with the implication of the 〈Won wang saeng ga〉, the expression of the 〈Shan tuo〉 is explicit, but the content of two novels are similar in the expression of the contradictions about sensual desire with “less desire” requirements from the buddhist practice and the practice about getting rid of the pain. In addition, Eumjang and Alternate Immortal broke the ring through evildoing. Compared with Eumjang who should obey the Ten Commandments, Alternate Immortal should Keep mouth, heart and body immaculate. However, they were in violation of the precepts, suffered pain. In this view, the discovery of the appetency from love and the evildoing impair or damage the buddhist practice separately, and cause the conflict of love and buddhist practice. Although there are many differences in the expression and character set etc between the two novels, but the two novels show the frustrations on the way to Nirvana through he sensual desire and evildoing. We can find a same character through the two novels that they all take the human nature as the center and yearn for nirvana. The love and spiritual practice in the novel is not only in conflict, but also in consistency in some areas. In the third chapter, it takes the love and spiritual practice from the 〈 Won wang saeng ga 〉 as a center to reveal that less desire and effort is the method make the love and spiritual practice together. It’s different with 〈Won wang saeng ga〉, 〈Shan tuo〉 makes the love instead of the spiritual practice. Because in contrast with the conflicts between love and spiritual practice, there are also some homogeneities with the object of “ending suffering”practice in love. However, one is about the practice which experienced the love, in the other the practice is realized by love. In light of this, 〈Won wang saeng ga〉 seek the breadth of Nirvana, and the 〈Shan tuo〉 shows that the earthly love is the Nirvana itself and advocates supremacy of earthly love.

Vol.0 No.53
