The contact wire made of copper or copper alloy is installed to keep a good current collection performance between a pantograph and catenary system. The tensioning device installed in a contact and messenger wire is required to have high reliability as a major component of the feeding facility which keeps constant tension of the wires regardless of temperature changes. The maintenance of the tensioning device is generally performed by the man power. In this paper, we propose a condition monitoring system for a spring tension device using sensor network and communication based on Internet of Thing. The proposed monitoring system is composed of a structure integrated with tensioning device by applying an ultrasonic sensor with minimum power consumption and communication device. It was able to monitor the dynamic state of the tensioning device according to temperature change n real time through the displacement of ultrasonic sensor.

In the electrical railway, the tension ascension of contact wire is essential to speed up of train and current collection performance of catenary largely depends on the tension. The tension variation rate of the tensioning device used in existing line limits within 5%, and the tension variation rate of the spring-type tensioning device installed at the section where tensioning length is short bounds within 15%. So it is urgent for us to localize it for high speed line, which the tension variation rate is limited within 3%. Therefore in this study, a pulley-type tensioning device for high speed line is developed. To verify the performance of developed device, a performance test, overload test and failure test is carried out under the code of the Kyung-Bu High Speed line. And it is secured durability performance through a fatigue test.

Even if tracks cross each other, a train has to maintain a good current collection. Where catenary cross each other, it is called a crossover. Based on the cause analysis for a breakdown accident of pantograph occurred in the crossover on Ansan-line, a theoretical background and recommendation for the installation rule of a crossover are presented in the paper.

Increasing tensions of contact wire and messenger wire are essential to construct a test-bed for catenary system in the 400km/h speed on Honam high-speed railway. Because heavy load is applied to a mast due to the increased the tensions of both wires it is required to investigate the strength of the foundation. Therefore in this study the maximum moment of an electric pole under the worst condition was calculated to investigate the strength of the pole foundation on the bridges. The maximum moment database table used in the construction of Kyungbu high-speed railway was referenced to derive the worst conditions and to review the composition of catenary system in the test-bed section. From the results of this study regarding assumptions and calculation process it will be possible to estimate the optimized strength of the pole foundations on the bridges which will be constructed in the future.

Overhead Line is divided by two systems which are OCS (Overhead Catenary Line) and R-Bar (Overhead Rigid Conductor system). R-Bar has an advantage of maintenance and economic aspect comparing with OCS. R-Bar in Korea has developed for the max. speed of 120 ㎞/h, but it is evaluated up to the max. speed of 250 ㎞/h in Europe. There are lots of mountains and underground sections in korea, it is really necessary to develop the R-Bar for a high-speed line. In the study, design parameters for the max. speed of 250 ㎞/h of R-Bar was proposed. A bracket space, stiffness, and especially an installation tolerance of contact wire height at a bracket were considered as a parameter, and a dynamic behavior between a contact wire and pantograph was predicted by evaluated FEM simulation tool. The installation tolerance and bracket space are more important for the high-speed system. The proposed parameters was decided very conservative. Because the aerodynamic characteristics of a pantograph in tunnel is more severe than an open route and the simulation tool is not considered the such kind of aerodynamic characteristics.

In a section of AC electric railway, a phase between the sections is different although voltage levels supplied from substations are the same. Therefore, section insulators have been installed to electrically divide between the sections. Two differenet types of section insulator, namely an overlap type and insulator type, are used. In Korean high-speed lines, overlap type section insulator has been adopted. And, insulator type is used in conventional line. The overlap type has the advantage of having no speed limit, but has the disadvantage of requiring long section length. However, the insulator type has the advantage of section length, but also has the disadvantage of having speed limit. In Korean conventional line, an insulator type one relies on the import and there is some problem with wear. In this study, we developed the insulator type section insulator which adopts Teflon tube insulation material. The Teflon material has advantage of the excellent electrical characteristics and wear-resistance characteristics for a longer expected life than that made of existing FRP. In order to compare wear characteristics between the materials, wear tests with reciprocal wear tester are performed. And dynamic behavior tests between the insulators and pantograph are also performed for showing its better dynamic characteristics.
