Purpose Early diagnosis and an improved survival rate have emerged as important issues for cancer survivors returning to work during the prime of their working life. This study investigated the attitudes of the general public towards cancer survivors returning to work in Korea and attempted to identify the factors influencing this negative attitude. Materials and Methods A general public perception survey regarding cancer survivors returning to work, targeting 2,000 individuals between 40-70 years of age, was conducted as face-to-face home visit. Results The public expressed a negative attitude towards cancer survivors returning to work, in terms of both perception and acceptance. Negative perception was higher among those in metropolitan areas compared with urban/rural areas (odds ratio [OR], 1.71), with monthly incomes < $2,000 compared with > $4,000 (OR, 1.54), and with patient care experience compared with those without (OR, 1.41). Negative acceptance was higher among those with monthly incomes < $2,000 compared with > $4,000 (OR, 1.71) and those with patient care experience compared with those without (OR, 1.54). The common factors between acceptance and perception that influenced negative attitude included area of residence, patient care experience, and monthly income. Conclusion This study identified negative attitudes towards cancer survivors returning to work in South Korea and the factors influencing the reintegration of cancer survivors into society. It is necessary to promote community awareness and intervention activities to enable access to community, social, and individual units for the social reintegration of cancer survivors.
Vol.18 No.1
Education is essential for specialists in charge terminal care of cancer patients. In the second 10-year plan to conquer cancer under the Cancer Control Act, the Korean government announced a plan to train more hospice and palliative care (HPC) specialists based on quantitative HPC expansion. Specifically, the government aims to develop e-learning programs to foster social workers in HPC, following those offered to doctors and nurses. In HPC, social workers have served a vital role in helping patients overcome psychological and social issues. As professionals, they have carried out their responsibilities and played their part in the field to help HPC to take root and be institutionalized in Korea. To date, it has been difficult to obtain practical knowledge and skills for social workers due to the lack of systematic training program. Development of an e-learning program for social workers, as proposed in this study, should strengthen social workers in charge of terminally-ill cancer patients in terms of their identity, expertise, and practical skills in clinical setting and improve their access to education. We also hope the program to be further developed by the government by introducing an education system that offers refresher courses to guarantee social workers' continued expertise through.
Vol.57 No.4
The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the mobility behavior of urban people. To prepare a prompt response to the post-COVID era and to improve city resilience for the next generation, this study seeks to understand the mobility changes and analyzes the factors that affected the change. This study assumes that mobility changes on weekdays, weekends, and internal and external mobility will occur differently due to COVID-19. The dependent variable is a difference in Living Population (LP) in 2020 compared to 2019, and the explanatory variables are factors in population density, car ownership density, land use, temperature, precipitation, and COVID-19-related policy factors, including the frequency of emergency texts, the number of confirmed cases, and daily press releases. Since the data are approximately one-day units for two years and 25 districts in Seoul, panel Generalized Least Squares was applied to control heterogeneity and time-series autocorrelation in the panel data. The result indicates that news frequency increases internal mobility and decreases external mobility regardless of weekdays or weekends, which means long-distance mobility was substituted by mobility in the nearby areas. The COVID-19-related policy factors are found to be effective in controlling urban mobility, and alternatives to provide COVID-19 information transparently should be considered at a more detailed level, depending on the measured taken by different districts to manage the post-COVID era changes.
