앰브로즈 비어스와 로베르 앙리코의 비교 연구: 소설 「치카모가」와 영화 <치카모가>에 나타난 그로테스크

미국 남북전쟁 중에 징집을 회피했던 대부분의 동시대 작가들과 달리 앰브로즈 비어스(1842~1914)는 북부 연방군 병사로 자원입대하여 전쟁이 발발해서 끝날 때 까지 전 기간 군에 몸을 담았다. 미국 문학사에서 비어스는 남북전쟁을 주제로 다룬 그의 많은 단편소설을 통해 거의 최초로 피비린내 나는 전투를 매우 사실적으로 묘사하였다. 그의 대표 단편소설 「치카모가」를 통해 비어스는 삶과 죽음, 순수와 경험, 공포와 웃음의 양가성이 존재하는 그로테스크의 생경한 세계를 뛰어나게 형상화하고 있다. 특히 「치카모가」는 표현주의 혹은 초현실주의 그림을 연상시키는 묘사가 두드러진다. 「치카모가」는 시대와 장르를 초월하여 많은 예술가들에 창조적 영감을 불러일으키고 있다는 점에서 주목할 만하다. 이는 「치카모가」에 영감을 받은 프랑스 영화감독 로베르 앙리코가 1962년에 발표한 <치카모가>라는 단편영화를 통해 살펴볼 수 있다. 앙리코는 「치카모가」의 생경한 세계, 즉 전율과 동시에 쓴 웃음을 불러일으키는 세계를 탁월하게 시각적으로 변형시키고 있다. 그로테스크의 정수를 담아낸 영화 <치카모가>는 ‘언어적 문학성의 확장’이라는 명제를 명백히 입증해 주고 있다. Unlike most of his contemporary writers who evaded the military service during the American Civil war, Ambrose Bierce voluntarily enlisted and served in the Army as a Union solider for the entire period of the war. For the first time in the history of American literature, Bierce realistically describes the bloody battle like a photograph through most of his short stories on the war. Furthermore, Bierce’s representative short story “Chickamauga” remarkably discloses the estranged world of the grotesque in which the ambivalence of life and death, innocence and experience, horror and laughter coexists. Transcending the bounds of periods and genres, “Chickamauga” has a great impact on lots of artists. This is manifested in a superb short film entitled Chickamauga in 1962 created by a French film director Robert Enrico. It is important that this film strikingly transforms Bierce’s estranged world of the grotesque reminiscent of the expressionist or surrealist painting, which provokes both horribleness and a bitter smile, into the visual representation. Enrico s film epitomizes the extension of verbal literacy as it eminently represents the essence of the grotesque in Bierce’s “Chickamauga.”

제 3 부 한국인의 가치관과 인성교육 : “대모신(大母神)”으로서 엘레나 윌리엄즈-윌리엄 칼로스 윌리엄즈의 예술적 상상력의 원천

윌리엄즈는 유년시절부터 일평생 그에게 지대한 영향을 끼쳐서 그가 여성의 타자성을 희석시켜 상호 융합할 수 있게 했고, 모성성의 본질을 보여준 어머니 엘레나(Elena Williams)를 롤 모델(role model)로 삼고 시적 상상력을 만개시켜 나갔다. “예술에 대한 그녀의 관심은 예술에 대한 나의 관심이 되었다”는 윌리엄즈의 천명은 그의 상상력에서 차지하는 엘레나의 심오한 영향력을 집약적으로 보여준다. 윌리엄즈의 작품에서 중심 모티프를 차지하는 어머니와 모성성에 비해 시인의 아버지 조지 (George Williams)와 부성성은 거의 언급되지 않거나 부정적으로 묘사되고 있다. 윌리엄즈의 작품에 재현되는 긴밀한 모자관계는 필연적으로 심리학이나 정신분석학과 불가분적인 상관성을 지니고 있다. “내게 어머니는 영웅적 인물, 시적 이상처럼 보였다”는 윌리엄즈의 언급에서 단적으로 드러나듯 엘레나는 시인에게 지속적으로 시적 영감을 불러일으킨 예술가로 각인되고 있다. 엘레나는 윌리엄즈에게 생물학적 혈연관계를 뛰어넘어 강렬한 미학적 유대감을 불러일으키기 때문에 엘레나는 노이만(Erich Neumann)이 말하는 "대모신"이라는 개념에 부합한다. 요컨대, “대모신” 이미지에는 일종의 원형적인 상, 영원한 상징, 우리모두가 어머니와 결합되어 있다는 정신적 문제들의 전조가 함축되어 있다. 윌리엄즈는 시와 산문을 통해 “대모신”으로서 엘레나의 이미지를 부각시킴으로써 남성중심주의적 시각의 한계를 초월하고 있다. 그래서 시인은 선형적이고 이원론적인 시각에서 벗어나 순환적이고 다원론적인 시각에 대한 비전을 가지게 되었다. 윌리엄즈의 시와 산문을 통해 “대모신”으로 표상되는 엘레나는 윌리엄즈의 창의적 상상력을 발현시켜 준영원한 뮤즈로 자리 잡고 있다. Throughout his entire life, Williams has strongly been influenced by his mother Elena. Originally born from Puerto Rico, Elena is inscribed as a strong emotional connectedness and an aesthetic kinship beyond blood ties, mother and son, in the works of Williams. As he states that “Her interest in art became my interest in art.” Elena becomes the avatar of maternity in Williams`` imagination. While Elena and maternity function as the positive and creative driving forces, Williams`` father George and paternity are rarely dealt with or usually described as negative attributes. The intimate mother-son relationship in Williams’ poetry and prose is indivisibly related to Psychology and Psychoanalysis. As his statement that “She seemed an heroic figure, a poetic ideal” plainly manifests, Elena is invariably inscribed as an artist who stimulates poetic inspiration to Williams. As she arouses the strong aesthetic bond transcending the biological blood ties with his son, Elena accords with the concept of the “Great Mother,” a term representing a partial aspect of the Archetypal Feminine coined by Erich Neumann. In short, the image of the “Great Mother” presupposes a highly developed speculative consciousness that we all are related to the Mother. Due to Elena, Williams is able to have the circular and pluralistic vision breaking from the linear and dualistic perspective. Throughout Williams`` entire poetry and prose, Elena signifying as the “Great Mother” acts as an eternal muse who provokes the poet’s creative imagination.
