This study compares social cognition abilities between normal children and children addicted to the Internet by Happe's Strange Stories Test, and examines the effects of Internet use habits, mental health, and intellectual development on social cognition abilities of children. The subjects were 40 fifth and sixth graders of an elementary school located in Gyeonggi Province. They were divided into two groups depending on the level of addiction to the Internet: the addicted group of 13 children and the normal group of 27 children. Major findings are as follows. First, addicted children showed a lower level of social cognition abilities than normal children. In the sub-domain of mental health, addicted children showed a lower level of pro-social behaviors and a higher level of problems in hyperactivity and peer relations than normal children. They also showed a lower level of attention in the sub-domain of intellectual development than normal children. Second, regarding the effect of Internet use habits on social cognition abilities, deviant behaviors and virtual interpersonal relationship had a significant influence on social cognition. Third, a significant relationship was found between behavioral problems and social cognition abilities. Fourth, no signifiant relationship was found between pro-social behaviors and social cognition. This study is of significance in that its findings contribute to in-depth understanding of children addicted to the Internet use.
