        한국인 영어학습자의 영어능력과 어휘지식간의 상관관계

        신창원 한국언어과학회 2011 언어과학 Vol.18 No.3

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between adult Korean EFL learners' overall proficiency and their vocabulary knowledge by examining how the vocabulary knowledge that Korean learners have about English verbs is related to their overall English proficiency. For this study, data were collected from Korean EFL learners through a vocabulary knowledge test which focuses on semantic, morphological, and syntactic properties of English verbs and a TOEIC test. The results showed that there was a positive correlation between their vocabulary tests scores and TOEIC scores. It was also found that the syntactic part of the vocabulary test had the highest correlation with the TOEIC scores. In particular, the syntactic property of lexical knowledge was found to be the most important predictor of English proficiency. Based on these findings, it was argued that the qualitative/in-depth view of L2 lexical knowledge might be appropriate for explaining the interdependent nature of vocabulary knowledge and language proficiency, since this qualitative perspective sees lexical knowledge as consisting of various properties such as semantic, morphological, and syntactic features

심층적인 영어 어휘지식의 효율적인 측정방안 연구

        신창원 미래영어영문학회 2014 영어영문학 Vol.19 No.1

The purpose of this study is to explore an efficient way of measuring in-depth L2 English vocabulary knowledge, based on the ‘implicational hierarchy’ of various aspects of L2 vocabulary knowledge. To this end, data were collected from Korean EFL learners through a vocabulary knowledge test which was designed to assess L2 learners’ knowledge of meaning, morphological, and syntactic properties of English verbs. The results showed that there were significant differences in mean scores of three components of the vocabulary test, suggesting that there might be degrees of difficulty in learning the three aspects of vocabulary knowledge: [meaning > morphological knowledge > syntactic knowledge]. Furthermore, it was found that there might be some kind of implicational hierarchy of the three components. In other words, this finding might make it possible to assume that the acquisition of the most difficult aspect of vocabulary knowledge implies that of other easier aspects. Based on this assumption, a more efficient measure of in-depth L2 vocabulary knowledge was proposed.

예비영어교사의 글로벌-다문화 역량 강화를 위한 해외 교육 프로그램 모델

        신창원 미래영어영문학회 2018 영어영문학 Vol.23 No.3

Recently many teacher training institutes have implemented overseas experience programs to develop pre-service English teachers’ global-multicultural competence, which has been deemed to be one of the major standards for future English teaching profession. In this regard, the aim of this study is to propose one possible model for administering different types of overseas programs. For this, overseas programs including educational outreach programs and overseas practicums were analyzed to identify their strengths and weaknesses. The analysis of various programs implemented in GTU as well as other institutes revealed the following key points that should be considered in designing an effective and sustainable overseas education program: (1) online-based pre-program education and overseas education-related database construction, (2) pre-program education - overseas program - evaluation, and (3) sociocultural- based connections among overseas programs. Based on these factors, one possible guideline for managing each overseas program effectively was suggested, and its applicability was discussed.

ESP 교육을 위한 소규모 코퍼스 구축: 기계공학 관련 논문초록을 중심으로

신창원 서강대학교 언어정보연구소 2012 언어와 정보 사회 Vol.17 No.-

The purpose of this study is to explore some ways to use a small specialized corpus for effective ESP teaching. To this end, a specialized corpus of research article abstracts was compiled on the basis of research journals in the field of mechanical engineering. From this corpus, frequent words, keywords, and 2-, 3-, 4- word clusters were also extracted using corpus analysis programs like WordSmith Tools and AntConc. The analysis of the extracted words, keywords, and clusters shows that they have domain or genre-specfic features which are distinct from General English in terms of their frequency and meaning shown in the corpus. Consequently, it is considered that this specialized corpus can contribute to offering authentic language usage related to abstract writing in mechanical engineering. Finally, some pedagogical implications were also presented for ESP teachers.

Situational Factors Triggering Code-Switching in Oral and Written Language: A Case Study of Korean Speakers of English

신창원 중앙대학교 외국학연구소 2016 외국학연구 Vol.- No.36

The purpose of this study was to identify the situational factors affecting Korean speakers’ language choice of English or Korean in Korean–Korean conversations and written language. Based on interviews, observations, and document data collected from three female Korean speakers of English, the following situations which induce switching to English in Korean–Korean conversations and written language were identified: (1) situations that address daily American realities, systems, or concepts; (2) situations that involve subjects experienced or learned in the American context; (3) situations that serve a specific function in interactions, such as showing off, excluding a person, making a request or command, creating intimacy, and accommodating the interlocutor; and (4) situations that take place in private vs. public settings. Some limitations of this study are also noted.

영어교과서 관련 국내 연구 동향 분석

        신창원 미래영어영문학회 2022 영어영문학 Vol.27 No.3

The aims of this study are to examine the research trends of journal articles on elementary, middle, and high school English textbooks based on the 2015 revised national curriculum and to explore implications for future related research. To this end, 110 academic papers on English textbooks were collected using KCI(Korea Citation Index), and they were classified by school level, year of issue, language skills, research topics, and textbook components. According to the research results, English textbooks in elementary schools were studied the most, and the articles on English textbooks were published the most from 2019 to 2021, during which the 2015 national curriculum came into full force. Second, reading, vocabulary, culture, and integrated language skills were the most focused language skills in the articles on English textbooks. Thirdly, among seven research topics on English textbooks, most of the articles were found to be focused on content analysis. Thus, research on textbook selection, teaching methods, and teachers’ perception of textbooks needs to be conducted in the future. Lastly, the textbook components mainly studied were teaching and learning activities, continuity and systematicity, culture, vocabulary, and functions, so content topics, language forms, authenticity, and evaluation also need to be addressed in future research. Finally, the limitations of the study were discussed.

Minimal Pair Drills: Are They Always an Effective Way to Practice English Vowel Discrimination?

        신창원 현대영어교육학회 2011 현대영어교육 Vol.12 No.4

The present study attempted to re-evaluate the effectiveness of minimal pair drills, based on the concept of markedness or typological markedness, which was adopted by Eckman (1977, 1981a) to account for L2 phonology such as the relative degree of difficulty in L2 acquisition. To this end, the perceptual acquisition of English tense and lax vowels by Korean speakers of English was investigated to see how effective minimal pair drills are in perceiving the differences between similar L2 sounds. The notion of typological markedness made it possible to formulate the three different hypotheses about possible treatments for helping Korean learners identify L2 English tense-lax vowels: minimal pair stimulus, tense vowel (unmarked vowels) stimulus, and lax vowel (marked vowels) stimulus. The results showed that lax vowels were a more useful stimulus rather than the other two stimuli - minimal pair and tense vowels, suggesting that presenting only lax vowels or presenting lax vowels earlier might be a more effective way to improve Korean learners' ability to discriminate English tense-lax vowels than using the minimal pair drills, at least in a context in which Korean learners are taught to identify English tense and lax vowelsat a word-level.

영어과 국가교육과정 관련 국내 연구 동향 분석: 2009‧2015개정 교육과정을 중심으로

        신창원 미래영어영문학회 2023 영어영문학 Vol.28 No.3

This study investigated the research trends in the 2009 and 2015 National English Curricula through a meta-analysis of the articles published in major Korean ELT-related journals. To this end, 89 academic papers on the English curriculum were selected through the Korea Citation Index(KCI), and they were classified by year of issue, research topics, and research methods. The results of this study revealed that the publication of articles on the English curricula has increased every year since 2010, however, showing a surging increase of the articles from 2019 to 2021. The research topic that has been dealt with the most was an analysis of English textbooks, followed by curriculum development and implementation, and teachers’ expertise in English curriculum. The most frequently used research method was quantitative since the majority of the studies were based on counting the frequency of particular elements in English textbooks or calculating the means of survey results. Theoretical studies were also frequently used to deal with the topic of curriculum development and implementation. Finally, the limitations of the study and the implications for future related research were discussed.

Structural and Functional Features of Written Code-Switching by Korean Speakers of English

신창원 국제언어인문학회 2008 인문언어 Vol.10 No.-

This study investigated the alternate use of English by Korean speakers of English in informal Korean written texts to see (1) in what situations and for what purposes Korean adult speakers of English living in the United States, code-switch into English, in the context of their own personal writing in Korean, and (2) what are the linguistic or structural features of the alternate language forms that they might produce. For this study, data were collected from 4 Korean female adults living in a mid-sized southern city with different goals for residency in the United States. Personal documents and unstructured interview were employed as a data collection method. The results showed that the structural features of the written code-switching might be explained by the typological difference between Korean and English with respect to the head position in given phrases, in that the head position ‘head-initial’ or ‘head-final’ has been considered to be a crucial factor determining the basic word order of a given language. On the other hand, it was found that the participants' perceived reason for using English content words in the Korean informal texts or adopting English word order might be for bridging the gap between their native language and their American life. It was suggested that the functional feature of the alternate use of English and Korean might be followed from that fact that memos on the datebooks should be efficient and economical, i.e. easily recognized and quickly produced.
