≪Tang Huiyao(唐會要)≫ is a Huiyao-style(會要體) history compiled from various official documents collected from the middle Tang(唐) period. 40 volumes of ≪Huiyao(會要)≫ were originally compiled by Sumian(蘇冕), and later 40 volumes of ≪Xu Huiyao(續會要)≫ were created under the supervision of Cuixuan(崔鉉). The compilation was finished by Wangpu(王溥) who supplemented and then compiled 100 volumes of ≪Tang Huiyao≫ in the early Song(宋) Dynasty. In the last section of ≪Tang Huiyao≫, the circumstances of neighboring countries of Tang were described including the ancient Korean countries. The book contains information on Goguryeo(高句麗), Baekje(百濟), Silla(新羅), Balhae(渤海), and Tamra(耽羅). The volume is brief and it places different importance on each country introduction and history. In this study, a comparative study on various Chinese official histories(中國 正史) including ≪Tang Huiyao≫ and ≪Tongdian(通典)≫ was made. As a result, it is found that ≪Tang Huiyao≫ has more similarities with the contents of ≪Jiu Tangshu(舊唐書)≫ than in Chinese official histories up to ≪Suishu(隋書)≫. This is the result of reinforcing the contents of the data up to the mid-to-late Tang dynasty. Besides, it seems that various data obtained by Tang's History Center(史館) would have become references. Compared to ≪Tongdian≫, it mainly focuses on data collection and attempts to reflect the relationship between the ancient Korean countries and Tang as much as possible while summarizing the previously known contents.
