A large time asymptotic solution for an unsteady heat conduction problem of a coated hot wire thermal conductivity measurement process was theoretically found. The solution revealed that the slope of wire temperature versus logarthmic time, which is used to evaluate the thermal conductivity, remains unchanged for large values of time even if a layer of coating is present on the hot wire. The significance of this result is that the thermal conductivity of an electrically conductive fluid can be measured with a coated hot wire using the same conversion relation as for a bare wire.

The characteristics of energy performance for total heat exchanger have been investigated under various conditions. In cooling operation the latent and enthalpy efficiency are affected by the difference of absolute humidity ratio between indoor and outdoor air. In addition to this the characteristics of absorbing material in the element affects the energy performance. Low dry bulb temperature of indoor air or high absolute humidity ratio in outdoor air give high latent and enthalpy efficiency even with the same temperature difference of dry bulb temperate between indoor and outdoor air.

Deposits discharged through the cleaning mainly were cement mortar, bitumen paintings and rust pieces, and fragments of perforation, stones and gravels. Deposits were more removed through swabbing pig cleaning rather than air scouring cleaning on the whole. However, air scouring cleaning were not influenced by the constraint conditions such as a change in the diameter or the presence of the valve in water mains compare to swabbing pig cleaning. So, it was thought that air scouring cleaning might be more favorable to water distribution network cleaning in the future. After the cleaning, water quality including residual chlorine and turbidity also was improved because of the removal of a significant amount of the deposits. Therefore, if the cleaning is continuously and regularly implemented in water mains, it is expected that it will help to recover the reliability and to preserve the health of water quality.

The design and manufacture of urban transportation applications has been necessarily complicated in order to improve its safety. Urban transportation systems have complex structures that consist of various electric, electronic, and mechanical components, and the maintenance costs generally take up approximately 60% of the total operational costs. Therefore, it is essential to establish a maintenance plan that takes into account both safety and cost. In considering safety and cost limitations, this research introduces an advanced reliability centered maintenance (RCM) planning method using computational techniques, and applies the method to a standard electric motor unit (EMU) subsystem. First, this research devises a maintenance cost function that can reflect the current operating conditions, and maintenance characteristics, of components by generating essential cost factors. Second, a reliability growth analysis (RGA) is performed, using the Army Material Systems Analysis Activity (AMSAA) model, to estimate reliability indexes such as failure rate, and mean time between failures (MTBF), of a standard EMU subsystem, and each individual component Third, two optimization processes are performed to ascertain the optimal maintenance reliability of each component in the standard EMU subsystem. Finally, this research presents the maintenance time of each component based on the optimal maintenance reliability provided by optimization processesand reliability indexes provided by the RGA method.
