A major focus in the expert systems research is to represent the knowledge base so that it can facilitate various inference engines, such as knowledge acquisition, intelligent tutoring and problem solving. We propose the MINERVA expert system shell that is the refinement of the NEOMYCIN based on the experience of the ODYSSEUS apprenticeship learning program. Explicit representation and opportunistic control of strategy knowledge allows the knowledge base to be used to the knowledge acquisition system, in addition to the problem solving engine. The declarative and side effect free representation of meta rules make it easy for the system to run the meta rules in reverse. This capability improves the performance of the apprenticeship learning program. The opportunistic control of strategy knowledge can improve the performance of the problem solver due to effective invocations. Experiment shows that the use of the explicit control mechanism increases the performance by around 16%. The incorporation of a maintenance system enables the system to generate more detailed explanations, detect inconsistency and retract hypotheses.

While three subjects were running on treadmill at five different speeds, their heart beat interval times were measured and analyzed. From the analysis, we discovered some relation- ships between workload and cardiac response, especially cardiac arrhythmia. Using these relationships, a physioligical model for estimating workload was developed. Although pulse rate has been considered as a good measure of physical load, this study shows that it is highly subject dependent and therefore unsuitable for task evalution. It is recommended to use range of heart beat interval times rather than pulse rate in the evaluation of light work.
