Recently, there have been active researches regarding endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). In this study, fifteen small freshwater streams in Cholla-namdo province, South Korea were investigated with respect to the concentration of the endocrine disruptors - Bisphenol A (BPA), styrene monomer (SM), styrene dimer (SD), and styrene trimer (ST) by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Measured concentration of the target compounds in the sampled water ranged from <ND to 5.03 ng/mL, <ND to 0.1 ng/mL, <ND to 0.04 ng/mL, and ND to 0.45 ng/mL for BPA, SM, SD, and ST, respectively. The endocrine disruptors analysis of the water samples showed that the concentration of BPA and ST were much higher than the other two compounds. These results imply that the streams of Cholla-namdo province were contaminated by materials generated from decomposition of polystyrene (PS) chemically and physically.

Acute invasive fungal sinusitis is an aggressive and often fatal infection. It is characterized by tissue invasion and can frequently spread beyond the paranasal sinuses. When fungal disease extends to the skull base, surgical debridement can be challenging. Traditionally, external approaches have been used for the management of disease in these areas. But recent advances in endoscopic skull base surgery have emerged as a successful surgical modality allowing for minimally invasive approaches with decreased morbidity and comparable treatment outcomes. We report our institution’s experience with endoscopic debridement of invasive fungal sinusitis extending beyond the skull base, safely performed with successful treatment outcome.

본 연구에서는 2단계 발효를 통해 복분자 식초를 제조한 후 이에 대한 이화학적 성분 및 항산화 활성을 측정하였다. 복분자 식초의 알코올 발효 종료 후 알코올 함량은 11.78±0.03%이었고, 당도는 8.40±0.05 Brix이었으며, 초산발효 종료 후 알코올 함량은 0.16±0.03%이었고, 산도는 6.07±0.11%이었다. 복분자 식초의 주요 유기산은 acetic acid(4,641.59 mg%)와 citric acid(1,241.05 mg%)이었고, 복분자 식초의 총 폴리페놀, 총 플라보노이드 함량은 각각 38.01 mg/g, 17.91 mg/g이었다. 페놀화합물 중 ellagic acid 함량이 1,127.43ug/g으로 가장 많았으며, gallic acid의 함량은 962.44ug/g을 보였다. 복분자 식초의 DPPH 라디칼소거 활성과 환원력은 500ug/mL 농도에서 각각 60.3%, 0.50이었다. This study was performed to investigate the physicochemical properties and antioxidant activity of bokbunja (Black raspberry) vinegar by two step fermentation. The bokbunja vinegar was contained the highest amount of acetic acid (4,641.59 mg%) followed by citric acid (1,241.05 mg%) among the major organic acids in the vinegar. The total polyphenol and flavonoid contents in bokbunja vinegar were 38.0 mg/g and 17.8 mg/g, respectively. The ellagic acid and gallic acid contents in bokbunja vinegar were 1,127.43ug/g and 962.44ug/g, respectively. At concentration of 500ug/mL bokbunja vinegar, the DPPH radical scavenging activity and reducing power were 60.3% and 0.50, respectively.
ossible Relationship between AMPK and Apoptosis in HT-29 Colon Cancer Cells Treated with CLA

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), an essential fatty acid linoleic acids (LA), has been shown to suppress cancer cell proliferation and induce apoptosis in several cancer cells. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), a highly conserved protein in eukaryotes, function as an intrinsic regulator of mammalian cell cycle and primarily as a sensor of cellular energy level. In this study, we have examined the effect of CLA on apoptosis and the regulatory effect of AMPK and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) pathway in HT-29 colon cancer. Treatment of CLA (20∼320μM) for 24 h inhibited proliferation of cancer cells and increased chromatin condensation levels represented apoptotic death. These apoptotic effects seemed to be related to AMPK-COX-2 pathways. CLA strongly activated AMPK at the concentration of 40μM and above and in the same condition, COX-2 expression was decreased in cancer cells. ROS is a possible upstream signal of AMPK. CLA generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) at the concentration of 40μM and 160μM in HT-29 colon cancer cells. These observations suggest that AMPK has an important role in cancer cell apoptosis induced by CLA and further AMPK-COX-2 pathway may be a possible target in cancer control.
화장품 부작용 경험 유·무에 따른 화장품 전성분표시제에 대한 인식

This study was initiated to analyze the differences between the awareness through cosmetic ingredients according to the experiences of side effects to these cosmetics and the awareness through the full ingredient labeling system of cosmetics targeting female college students. For this survey from October 31, 2014 to November 19, 2014 the questionnaires were distributed to female college students, survey subjects, who were residents in Gwangju and 730 questionnaires were used for the final data of analysis. The difference in awareness of cosmetics ingredients has shown that people who have experienced side effects are more interested in the ingredients in the cosmetics. The difference is the amount of awareness when using the full ingredient labeling system of cosmetics. It was shown that those who experienced side effects have recognized more about the implementations on their skin with the use of the full ingredient labeling system of their cosmetics. Accordingly, it is safe to guess that, since the full ingredient labeling system of cosmetics was initiated, the level of perceiving the full ingredient labeling system of cosmetics has not been high so far, nor has it been used practically. It must be considered that if initiatives are taken to reorganize the system as a whole, then the full ingredient labeling system of cosmetics will be subject to a more practical and active use.

This study was initiated to find out the usage of cosmetics, the purchase behaviors, and the awareness of the Full Ingredient Labeling System of Cosmetics targeting female college students. First, the respondents who had more concerns about cosmetics, read the instructions in the handbook for the product and checked the date of manufacture more thoroughly. The second of which is that the more concerns the respondents had with regards to their choice of skin products, the more concerns they had about the ingredients found in the products. The third of which is that as the respondents who had on skin products and had more concerns, they were aware of the Full Ingredient Labeling System of Cosmetics and checked the ingredients in the cosmetics them self. This survey`s aim was to find out the differences between the usage of cosmetics, the purchase behaviors of the respondents, and their awareness of the Full Ingredient Labeling System of Cosmetics, on the basis of which, there is significance that this study makes it possible to provide fundamental data for constructing a practical system.
