Potentiation of Ceramide-Induced Apoptosis by p27kip1 Overexpression

The cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p27kip1 (p27) has been implicated in the regulation of cell cycle and apoptosis. Recently, we have demonstrated that ceramide induces apoptotic cell death associated with increase in the level of p27 in HL-60 cells. In the present study, we showed that overexpression of p27 increases ceramide-induced apoptotic cell death in HL-60 cells. Furthermore, overexpression of p27 accelerated DNA fragmentation, PARP cleavage and cytochrome c release induced by ceramide. In addition, ceramide induced Bax expression independent of p27. These findings indicate that enhanced effect on apoptosis by p27 is associated with mitochondrial signaling which involves cytochrome c release.

6-Exomethylene penam derivatives were tested as possible β-lactamase inhibitors. The in vitro β-lactamase inhibitory activities were determined by a spectrophotometric assay using Type Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ, Ⅳ and TEM β-lactamase. Their activities were compared with sulbactam, tazobactam and clavulanic acid. The 6-exomethylene sulfone derivatives were more potent than clavulanic acid and sulbactam against Type Ⅳ β-lactamase. The Z-isomers showed stronger activities than the E-isomers against TEM and Type Ⅳ β-lactamase.

Background: Accurate recognition of stroke victims by ambulance paramedics is necessary to ensure the rapid transfer of these patients to the hospital. We carried out a prospective study to characterize the cause of prehospital delays after stroke by the emergency medical service (EMS) and to determine the accuracy of identifying acute stroke by paramedics. Methods: All paramedics in the Busan Metropolitan 119 EMS were asked to record the clinical presentations and time intervals from symptom onset to various points along the patients’ prehospital course on the ambulance admission sheets for suspected stroke patients during a month (February 1, 2010 to February 28, 2010). Neurologists in twenty four hospitals reviewed the hospital records for the patients who were given a diagnosis of stroke or transient ischemic attack by the paramedics. Results: Of the EMS on-scene evaluations, the diagnosis of stroke by ambulance paramedics was correct for 79 of the 186(43%) patients. Positive predictive values for main suspected stroke symptoms were 95% in hemiparesis, 88% in speech disturbance and 44% in impaired consciousness. The prehospital personnel transferred the suspected stroke patients to each hospital at a mean of 25 minutes after the emergency 119 call. However, only 62% of the stroke patients called EMS within the first 2 hours of stroke. Conclusions: Public education for the need to seek EMS promptly after stroke as a medical emergency, and stroke-specific training for EMS personnel are essential so that stroke patients receive effective acute treatment.
Development of a 3MJ/750kVA SMES System

Research and development on superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) system have been done to realize efficient electric power management for several decades. Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI) has developed a 3MJ/750kVA SMES system to improve power quality in sensitive electric loads. It consists of an IGBT based power converter, NbTi mixed matrix Rutherford cable superconducting magnet, and a cryostat with HTS current leads. A computer code was developed to find the parameters of the SMES magnet which has minimum amount of superconductors for the same stored energy, and the 3MJ SMES magnet was designed based upon that. This paper describes the fabrication and experimental results of a 3MJ/750kVA SMES system.

For the development of a small-sized superconducting magnetic energy storage($\mu$SMES) system we designed, fabricated and tested a model coil consisting of five coils with different features. e.g. winding tensions. bore diameters and materials. cooling channels. The results show that even in the highly pre-stressed small coil the quench currents of the coils are degraded to about 70% of their coils critical current. The quench currents of the coils with natrow cooling channels are two times as high as that of the coil without spacers. The test results also indicate that the usual training effect depends on the winding tensions of the coils according to materials of the bobbin.
