This paper aims to explore Young Hill Kang’s East Goes West with thematic inquiries of so-called cosmopolitan melancholy. East Goes West, written in 1937, has been acclaimed as a harbinger of Korean American fiction though in numerable aspects it has raised serious questions of its themes and characters due to dominating geographical, ideological judgments. This paper, avoiding falling into the pit of politically bipolar understanding, maintains that the characters, Chungpa Han and Dowan Kim, are allegorical figures unfolding their cosmopolitan melancholia as political unconsciousness persevering in the most capitalistic urban space in the U. S. Alienation, reification, exile, diaspora, and melancholia form a constellation of allegory reflecting characters’ unstable identity, resistance to assimilation to capitalistic culture, and interstitial obscurity confronting imperialism and intricate machine of capitalism in the U. S. as well as global space. As theoretical scaffoldings, to explore melancholia as both creative force and ideological fantasy, this paper uses Sigmund Freud’s idea of the difference between mourning and melancholia, Walter Benjmain’s understanding of Baudelaire’s themes?flaneur, poetic hero?and melancholia as galvanizing source of creativity. Embracing these themes and theoretical ideas, the paper consists of three parts: First, it throughly analyzes Chungpa’s melancholia using Freud’s theory of melancholia focusing on ideological fantasies of cosmopolitanism; In turn, using Benjamin’s understanding of flaneur in Baudelaire’s poetry, it delves into the limit of Chungpa’s recognition of capitalistic system as a symptom of his melancholia; Last, focusing on Dowan Kim’s eternal exile and his suicide, the paper suggests power of melancholia as creativity.

『시경(詩經)』『큰 쥐(碩鼠)』와 김시습의 「큰 쥐」 비교 연구

This is a comparative study on Kim si-seup(金時習, 1435∼1493)`s ``Big Mouse``(碩鼠) and the poetry of the same title included in the Book of Poetry(詩經). Kim`s ``Big Mouse`` is based upon ``Big Mouse`` of the Book of Poetry. Therefore, it is necessary to compare these two works in order to explain how Kim appropriated the literary tradition of the Book of Poetry, and what the peculiarity of Kim`s ``Big Mouse`` is. The ultimate aim of this study is to investigate new methodology which can help new understanding of critical poetry written in classical Chinese during Choseon period. When the realistic literary theory based on counter-nationalism got wide consent, many scholars studied the critical poetry written in classical Chinese during Choseon period. But such studies are seldom found nowadays. This study is an attempt to reconsider critical poetry written in classical Chinese during Choseon period in relation to classical tradition.

신체유물론적 시각에서 본 심대윤의 ‘노동 옹호 윤리학’

This paper explores the welfare ideas of Shim Dae-yun (沈大允, 1806-1872) from the perspective of soma-materialism. Soma-materialism focuses on the human body, animality and physical activity. It is frequently mentioned that Shim regarded the pursuit of profit as a human nature. But it is labor that produces profits and labor is a physical act. Therefore it is body and labor that have preponderance importance over profit-seeking. Focusing on Shim’s ideas about human body and labor, this paper first analyzes Shim’s own labor experience from various perspectives, then examines Shim’s thought of body and labor, and investigates traces of mentality of ordinary people and working-class projected in Shim’s thought. Through these discussions, it is judged that Shim’s thought has various ideas about human body and show materialistic consciousness well.

Objective : The purpose of this study is to compare the effects of near acupuncture point needling and remote acupuncture point needling on treating ankle sprain of acute stage. Methods : From March 1st, 2007 to May 30th, 2007, the 50 patients who had visited Iksan oriental medical hospital, Wonkwang university with acute ankle sprain were divided into 2 groups ; one group took near acupunture point needling, and the other group took remote acupunture point needling. Both group had been treated with the same additional rest, ice, compression and elevation(RICE) therapy. To evaluating the efficiency of each treatment, Visual Analog Scale(VAS) and Ankle-Hindfoot Scale(AHS) were applied before 1st treatment and after 3rd treatment. Results : As a result of evaluation by using AHS, the score change comparison between the two groups had no significance after the treatment. As a result of evaluation by using VAS, treatment score of remote acupucture point needling was marked lower than score of near acupucture point needling. Conclusion : Remote acupucture point needling is more effective than near acupucture point needling in controlling the pain of acute ankle sprain.

Actinomycosis involving the female genital tract has increased since the advent of the intra-uterine contraceptive devices (IUD) : the incidence of actinomyces in IUD users with pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) was reported to be between 17% and 30%. However a definte relationship between actinomyces and PID has not been demonstrated as yet. We present a case of pelvic actinomycotic infection that was initially diagnosed by means of fine needle aspiration. A 57-year-old female presented with urinary frequency and difficulty for 100 days. Computerized tomographic findings showed a mixed heterogenous soft tissue mass in the left superior aspect of urinary bladder. Fine needle aspiration was done under the impression of urinary bladder cancer. Microscopically, smears disclosed many sulfur granules in necrotic background with many neutrophils, histiocytes, multinucleated giant cells and granulation tissue. These findings were confirmed by surgical removal of the mass.

An analytical electron microscope system has been widely used in biology, medicine, veterinary medicine, agriculture, and materials, etc. nowadays in Korea Market since mid of 1980's. How to install and to choose the equipments? The answers are which prerequisites are needed to us. The purpose is going to introduce the prerequisites of the pre-installation and installation of Philips analytical electron microscope(CM 12/STEM and SEM 515, Philips, The Netherlands) in the National Institute of Safety Research, Seoul and to discuss the check-subjects. The check-subjects in the pre-installation and installation are more than 24. The influence of magnetic fields, mechanical vibrations, earth is crucial factor for decision of installation site. The areas of our electron microscope center are $105.6m^2$ and have the Automatic Image Analyzer System(IBAS, Kontron Co., Germany) connecting to the SEM mode. Water temperature was controlled by the NESLAB recirculatory chillers(NESLAB Co., U.S.A.).

본고는 조선후기 가옥 매매에 대한 사례 연구이다. 유만주(兪晩柱, 1755~1788)의 사례를 다룬다. 우선 본고는 유만주의 가옥 매입에 소용된 자금의 출처를 추적한다. 친족의 부조와 경강상인 혹은 경강주인의 사채가 그 주요 자금원(資金源)이었다. 이어서 본고는 구매 결정 과정을 살펴본다. 집 구경, 집의 장단점 관찰, 도면 그리기 등을 거쳐 구매 결정이 이루어진다. 이 중 도면 작성 단계는 본고가 처음 밝힌 것이다. 도면은 집의 규모와 형태를 살피고 다른 사람의 자문을 구하기 위해 활용되었다. 그 다음으로 본고는 매매 계약의 실상에 초점을 맞춘다. 유만주의 부동산 거래는 그리 안정적이지 않았다. 가옥 매매는 동시에 여러 건이 진행되기도 했는데, 집문서가 교환된 뒤에 매매가 갑자기 무산되기도 했다. 아울러 본고는 유만주가 사들인 집의 가격 수준을 몇 가지 가격 비교를 통해 가늠한다. 끝으로 본고는 집주릅의 역할과 그 보수 형태에 주목한다. 집주릅의 활동 방식은 ‘갑자기’라는 말로 압축될 수 있다. 집주릅은 ‘갑자기’ 등장해서 흥정을 붙이거나 거래 방향을 바꿈으로써 거래의 주도권을 쥐었다. 그리고 매매를 되돌리기 힘든 시점에서 ‘갑자기’ 집값을 올림으로써 더 많은 이익을 취하는 전략을 구사하기도 했다. 집주릅은 거래를 주선하는 대가로 수고비를 받았다. 수고비는 대체로 1냥이었으며, 그 밖에 몇몇 물품을 수고비조로 받기도 했다. 이상 집주릅의 구체적인 활동 방식과 그 보수 형태는 본고가 처음 밝힌 것이다. This paper is a case study on real estate transaction of late Joseon. I explore Man-ju Yu(兪晩柱)`s record of purchase of house, which is found in his diary Heumyeong(欽英). First, I track down the source of the funds. Financial help of relatives and loan of Gyong-gang(京江) merchant were the major funding sources. Second, I examine the purchase decision process. Yu decided to purchase a house after visiting the house on sale, watching its pros and cons and drawing its floor plan. Third, I focus on the reality of the contract of sale. Yu`s real estate transaction was not so stable. Even the transaction was suddenly collapsed after the sale documents had been exchanged. I also examine the price level of house which Yu purchased by comparing the prices of other goods. Finally, I explore the role of the real estate agent who was called as ‘Jip-ju-rup’(집주릅) and pay mode for him. He appeared ``suddenly`` to attach to bargain and changed the bargain direction. In doing so, he exercised leadership in real estate transactions. Also at the point of being difficult to stop marketing the house, he ‘suddenly’ raised the house price. In doing so, he got more profit. Yu payed the real estate agent for arranging the deal. Usually the real estate agent received 1nyang. He also received some goods instead of money.
