남극 북빅토리아랜드 테라노바만 지역 토양의 지화학적 특징

한국의 장보고과학기지가 위치한 동남극 북빅토리아랜드 테라노바만 지역에서 2011년과 2012년에 걸쳐 하계기간 동안 총 25곳에서 토양시료를 채취하였다. 연구지역의 기반암은 화강암과 화강편마암이며, 식생은 주로 이끼류와 지의류가 분포한다. 일부지역에서는 도둑갈매기의 뼈와 둥지, 바닷새뼈 등이 관찰되었으며, 장보고과학기지의 북쪽으로 다각형 구조토와 계단형 구조토가 발달하고 있다. 토양의 풍화 정도와 지화학 조성을 이해하기 위해 입도와 총유기탄소량(TOC), 총질소량(TN), 주원소 및 미량원소, 희토류원소(REE) 조성을 분석하였다. 토양의 입도는 위치에 따라 넓은 범위를 보이지만 대체로 모래(55.0%)와 자갈(24.7%)이 우세한 특징을 보인다. 토양 내 TOC와 TN 역시 넓은 범위를 보이며 평균값은 각각 0.69%와 0.08%의 낮은 값을 보인다. TOC와 TN 값이 높게 나타나는 지점은 주로 조류의 흔적이 발견된 연안지역 쪽에 집중되어 있으며, P₂O5의 함량도 이와 유사한 경향을 보였다. 주원소 조성은 상대적으로 좁은 범위를 보이는데, SiO₂ 함량은 평균 68.0%, Na₂O와 K₂O는 각각 평균 2.6%와 3.2%로 기반암인 화강암질 암석과 유사한 조성을 보인다. CIA값은 평균 62.5이며 57.5에서 71.7 사이의 범위를 가지므로 어느 정도 화학적 풍화를 받았음을 지시한다. 미량원소의 조성과 REE 분포양상에서는 지점별 특별한 경향성은 관찰되지 않는다. REE의 경우 전체적으로 경희토류원소의 부화와 중희토류원소의 결핍이 뚜렷하게 관찰되며, 음의 Eu 이상(anomaly)과 약한 양의 Ce 이상을 보였다.

애도를 통한 무위의 공동체의 가능성 엿보기 ―『엄청나게 시끄럽고 믿을 수 없게 가까운』을 중심으로

This paper explores the idea of community in Foer’s Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, particularly focusing on how it attempts to imagine a new form of community different from the pervasive notion of patriotic national community that has gained strong currency since the 9/11 incident in 2001. The community presented in the text provides a form of membership through mourning, but this membership is not dictated by nationality, racial demarcation, or any pre-determined notions of identity. By sharing loss and pain with complete strangers and thus realizing the fluid yet continuing connection that we all share in a society, the characters show that collective mourning can be an alternative form of communal identity to the rigid boundary of national community. The idea of communal membership through mourning in the text is very much in the same line with Judith Butler’s and Jean-Luc Nancy’s theories, which theoretically outline the communal relationality containing Otherness. This paper attempts to show that the community presented in Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close encapsulates these theories, creating through literary imagination a mourning community that does not require fixed boundaries or any label of homogeneous membership.

종말서사 속 유토피아적 상상력의 가능성과 한계 ―『스테이션 일레븐』을 중심으로

This paper aims to explore how utopian imagination is intertwined with the post-apocalyptic narrative in Emily St. John Mandel’s Station Eleven. The novel is praised by many critics for conveying an optimistic and hopeful vision of the post-apocalyptic world, particularly through the power of culture and art. This paper follows this thread of criticism, on one hand, by arguing that Station Eleven indeed embodies the impulse of articulating utopian thoughts, which is heralded not just by art but also by the effort to reclaim the idea of community. Contrary to the majority of criticism on the novel, however, this paper also attempts to show the ideological limitation of the utopian impulse manifested in Station Eleven. This is revealed foremost by the novel’s treatment of reality. By positing modern technology as normality and Shakespeare as the only legitimate gatekeeper of spirituality, Station Eleven presents the real world as the ultimate goal for the post-apocalyptic world to return to. In doing so, the sense of temporality becomes disrupted and the apocalypse turns into a historically contingent incident. By closely examining these ahistorical aspects, this article argues that the utopian imagination of the novel, however with good faith, functions to reconfirm a romanticized version of reality and thus an ideological perception of history.

라이프로깅 애플리케이션 콘텐츠 구성을 위한 사용자 행태 분류

Recently, life-logging service which has expanded to measure and record the daily life of the users and to share with others are increasing. In particular, as life-logging services based on the application has become popular with the development of wearable-devices and smart-phones, the contents of this service are produced by user behavior and are provided in infographic menu form. The purpose of this paper is to extract user behavior and classify for making contents items of life-logging service. For this paper, the first of all, we discuss the definition and characteristics of life-logging and research the contents based on user behavior related to life-logging by the publications including thesis, articles, and books. Secondly, we extract and classify the user behavior to build the contents for life-logging service. We gather users` action words from publication materials, researches, and contents of existing life-logging service. And then collected words are analyzed by FGI (Focus Group Interview) and survey. As the result, 39 words which suit for contents of life-logging service are extracted by verify suitability. Finally, the extracted 39 words are classified for 19 categories -`Eat`, `Keep house`, `Diet`, `Travel`, `Work out`, `Transit`, `Shoot`, `Meet`, `Feel`, `Talk`, `Care for`, `Drive`, `Listen`, `Go online`, `Sleep`, `Go`, `Work`, `Learn`, `Watch` - which are suggested by the surveys, statistical analysis, and FGI . We will discuss the role and limitations of this results to build contents configuration based on life-logging application in this study.

(Background and Purpose) Recently, the expansion of the role of the public library beyond the place of information acquisition and education centered on books is demanding the symbol of the community and the value as a cultural community space. Accordingly, public libraries are developing in the form of complex cultural spaces to revitalize the region. The purpose of this paper is to explore the development direction of the public library to provide the central point of the development of unique culture and arts in a specific region and to create a cultural identity. In particular, this study aims to suggest the development direction of public libraries for local cultural branding through the study of public libraries as complex cultural spaces. (Method) First, we studies the concept of public library, the role related to the community, and the meaning of the library as a complex cultural space based on the bibliographic information. Second, we analyzes the cases of domestic and foreign public libraries operating as complex cultural spaces. Third, through the analysis results, we suggest the direction of development of public library as a complex cultural space. (Results) The function of a complex cultural space can be linked to the function of a public library by the characteristics of symbolism, complexity, expertise, participation and accessibility. As a result of the case analysis, participation among the five characteristic elements was the highest, which could see the importance of encouraging voluntary participation by providing various programs and spaces. The next high level of complexity and accessibility conforms to the meaning of a complex cultural space in that you can experience various values in an easily accessible space. Symbolism was rated as the highest scale in all cases. Based on this symbolism, the public library as a cultural complex will be able to be a landmark that accentuates the characteristics of the area and thus gain the value of the tourism industry as well as the influx of people from other regions. (Conclusions) Public libraries as complex cultural spaces can be landlocked and improve the quality of cultural spaces by developing contents of cultural spaces that fit the characteristics of regions and providing professional information. In addition, the architecture that serves as the hardware of space should be unique, and the operating program that is the software should meet the user's requirements. Variety, a characteristic of complex cultural spaces, needs to be applied to the spatial composition and services of public libraries. In conclusion, the pursuit of directionality, which fused the role and spatial composition of the composite cultural space while maintaining the basic function of public libraries, is expected to help promote the local branding and the lives of local residents.

『더 로드』와 9/11, 그리고 20세기 명백한 운명의 종언

This article explores the political significance of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road (2006), particularly in terms of its association with 9/11 and the idea of Manifest Destiny. Although modified in various ways from its original form from the nineteenth-century Manifest Destiny, the concept has remained as the basis of twentieth-century American international politics until 9/11, when its validity as well as righteousness has been seriously challenged. The Road depicts a post-9/11 world, where various elements associated with Manifest Destiny have become undermined or even null. McCarthy represents the nation as a ruined and claustrophobic space, in which the boundary of ‘frontier’ disappears and thus the impulse to expand the frontier is either lost or turned inward. In this situation, all Americans in the novel turn from explorers to bums: as descendants of frontier spirit, they show a constant gesture of moving on the road, but this action is completely meaningless and without purpose. By analyzing these elements as a degraded version of Manifest Destiny, this article aims to go beyond the general sentiment about The Road as a psychological reaction of trauma and terror after 9/11, and tries to illuminate it as a political statement to revisit the nation’s old ideal.

『세계 대전 Z』에 나타난 세계의 종말과 미국의 재탄생

This paper aims to explore the geopolitical aspect of apocalyptic imagination in World War Z. The novel presents zombies and its de-territorial characteristics as a symbolic way of expressing the fear of de-localizing power inherent in globalization, and by doing so, it continues the subversive tradition of zombie narrative questioning the status quo. The problem is, however, that this subversive element ultimately leads to a highly conservative impulse in the novel. As an maginary solution to the geopolitical problem of globalization, the author turns to mythical images of the U.S., which marks a “new” beginning of the nation in the post-apocalyptic world. In presenting the U.S. as the only place in the world properly inheriting liberal democracy, the author attempts to differentiate the nation from the rest of the world. The U.S. is presented as a special space practicing liberal democracy, while the rest of the world becomes extremely stereotypical places. Given that, this paper aims to argue that, contrary to the general readership and criticism, World War Z is based upon politically conservative impulse in which American exceptionalist ideas are ultimately endorsed and reinforced.
