Neurotoxic shellfish poisoning (NSP) can result from eating filter-feeding shellfish carrying brevetoxins produced by the marine dinoflagellate Krenia brevis (formally Gymnodinium breve). Brevetoxins enhance sodium entry into cells via voltage-sensitive sodium channels and have an excitatory effect. The incubation period is three hours (range 15 minutes-18 hours). NSP is characterized by gastroenteritis combined with neurologic symptoms. Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms include abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea and burning pain in the rectum. Neurologic symptoms are paresthesia, reversal of hot and cold temperature sensation, myalgia, headache, vertigo, and ataxia. Other symptoms may include malaise, tremor, dysphagia, bradycardia, decreased reflexes, dilated pupils, seizure, and coma. The health problem caused by K. breviscan be associated with a red tide bloom. We encountered 3 cases of neurotoxic shellfish poisoning. They all presented with GI and neurologic symptoms andrecovered after conservative treatment.

Pentachlorophenol (PCP) has been known to be a strong antibacterial agent and powerful pesticide. Quaternary ammonium salts have been reported to exhibit excellent antifungal activities. We observed that the antifungal activity of polymers containing PCP as pendant was not satisfactory even though the antibacterial activity was very strong. In this study, poly(methyl methacrylate-co-4-vinylbenzyl chloride) (poly(MMA-co-VBC)) was reacted with PCP and N,N-dimethylamine (DMA) to obtain poly(MMA-co-VBC)-PCP and poly(MMA-co-VBC)-DMA, respectively. The base polymer was also reacted with both PCP and DMA at the same time to obtain poly(MMA-co-VBC)-PCP-DMA. The polymers were characterized In terms of the antimicrobial acticity and the thermal property.

Vestibular neuritis is generally thought to be caused by a viral or postviral inflammatory disorder of vestibular structures. But there is no definite evidence to explain this pathophysiological mechanism until now. We experienced an unusual case of 34-year-old man who presented with facial paralysis several days after vertigo of a whirling nature. We report a case of facial palsy developed in succession of ipsilateral vestibular neuritis involving superior vestibular nerve which may infer the viral pathophysiology for the vestibular neuritis with a brief literature review.

Amid the situation that foreigners’ tour is increasing in the local regions beyond metropolitan area, this study is aimed to understand how positive and negative evaluations for tour effect the local residents. Also, it aims to understand the affect the hospitality has on foreign tourists so as to seek the developmental plans of the foreigners’ tour in the region. To do so, a survey research was conducted with the residents of Boryeong-si, Chungcheongnam-do. The results revealed that direct impact factors on the hospitality for foreign tourists were both ‘positive evaluation on the foreigners’ tour’ and ‘understanding of other cultures.’ ‘Overtourism evaluation’ which was the negative evaluation showed the negative impact indirectly through these two factors. In addition, negative correlation was found between ‘positive evaluation on the foreigners’ tour’ and ‘overtourism evaluation,’ implicating that dropping in the overtourism evaluation could be minimized if the evaluations on economic, sociocultural, and environmental effects of foreigners’ tour were raised
