A study on heat-flow analysis of friction stir welding on a rotation affected zone
강성욱,장범선,김재웅 대한기계학회 2014 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.28 No.9
In recent years, as interest in environmental protection and energy conservation rose, technological development for lightweight efficiencyof transport equipment, such as aircrafts, railcars, automobiles and vessels, have been briskly proceeding. This has led to an expansionof the application of lightweight alloys such as aluminum and magnesium. For the welding of these lightweight alloys, frictionstir welding has been in development by many researchers. Heat-flow analysis of friction stir welding is one such research. The flow andenergy equation is solved using the computational fluid dynamic commercial program ‘Fluent’. In this study, a rotation affected zoneconcept is imposed. The rotation affected zone is a constant volume. In this volume, flow is rotated the same as the tool rotation speedand so plastic dissipation occurs. Through this simulation, the temperature distribution results are calculated and the simulation results arecompared with the experimental results.
Study on fatigue experiment for transverse butt welds under 2G and 3G weld positions

Although the transverse butt weld method with ceramic backing strip has been widely used in various industrial fields for its fabricational convenience, it is rarely used in offshore industries since the fatigue strength of the weld joint has not been proved sufficiently. This study conducted fatigue tests for series of butt weld specimens with horizontal (2G) and vertical (3G) welding positions in order to verify the fatigue strength compared to S-N curve by DNV (Det Norske Veritas), IIW (International Institute of Welding) and Eurocode 3. The difference of the 2G specimens and the 3G specimens are investigated in terms of angular distortion and the effect on the fatigue strength are analyzed.

In this study, the deformation of friction stir welding on the aluminum battery housing material(AL6063-T5) applied to the electric vehicle was effectively predicted through experiments and numerical simulations. The temperature data were measured during the friction stir welding experiment, and the numerical simulation was carried out using the experimental temperature data. In the heat transfer analysis, the temperature distribution of the structure over time was calculated using the Reynolds equation. The final friction stir welding deformation was calculated by performing the structural analysis using the calculated temperature distribution data over time. The thermal elasto-plastic analysis was performed according to the friction stir welding process conditions and the welding sequences. Finally, the optimum welding condition was derived that the welding speed is 1000 mm/min and the rotation speed of the tool is 2000 RPM.
