This is a survey report on the megalithic monuments of the Pasema area in Sumatra, Indonesia, which was conducted in February 2011. The survey was carried out collaboratively by the Honam Cultural Property Research Center in Korea and the National Research and Development Center of Archaeology in Indonesia, and investigated seven dolmens, seven stone chamber tombs, thirteen stone statues, and one rock carving site. The dolmens, which can be divided into stone-supported type and capstone type, are situated on the plains and their construction dates are difficult to estimate. The stone chamber tombs, which are a side-entrance type, are situated on the low hills, but some of them are not clearly distinguished from the capstone type dolmens. The construction date of the stone chamber tombs is equally ambiguous, although they appear to have developed after the dolmens. Most of the stone statues coexist with the dolmens or the stone chamber tombs, but their function and the relationship with each other is not clearly understood until now. Menhir exists alone. The megalithic sites of the Pasema area are important archaeological materials through which we can understand cultural interactions in ancient East Asia. They awaits further investigation, particularly on the issue of establishing chronology through systematic excavation.
