Both Korean and Japanese are the same agglutive language. It can be thus seen that compared with English, which is an inflectional language, both languages are characteristic of developed suffix. Among these characteristics, however, the most representative "auxiliaries" are to be seen in parts of speech of Japanese, but not in those of Korean. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to examine the problems in teaching Japanese which occur because of these characteristic differences between Korean and Japanes. To be more specific, this study attempts to contrastively compare usuages of each type of auxiliaries of current Japanese with those of Korean and to examine relationship between them and to find out the more reasonable and appropriate method for teaching Japanses auxiliaries in teaching Japanese grammar.
日本語 謙讓語 考察 : 丁寧語化를 中心으로 About how to Courteous expressions
安秉坤 慶尙大學校 1981 論文集 Vol.20 No.2
It is in general said that among many languages in the world honorific expressions of Japanese and Korean is most developed and has a similar system each other as well. When Korean people learn Japanese, however, the most difficulty is to use this honorific expressions, in which we can find that modest expressions of Japanese have more various expressions than those of Korean. That is, it follows that in these expressions of Korean declined the suffix which had been a typical modest expressions of Middle Korean before the seventeenth century, while those of Japanese have not yet gone through this change. Therefore I aimed at studying the change concentrated on courteous expressions through misuse and confusion of Modest Expressions which have come into question in honorific expressions of present day Japanese. And according to the criteria of the classification of speech, I examined modest expressions by dividing into mours prefixes suffixes, verbs, and formal verbs. As a result, I could find that all nouns but "WATASI(WATAKUSI)" [わたし(わたくし)] had already lost the honorific me aning as modest expressions and so had prefixes and suffixes. That is to say, "O" [お] and "GO" [ご] alone are used limitedly in the special case of "ONEGAI" [おねがい] "GONHENdzI" [ごへんじ] and "TACHI" [たち] "RA" [ら] and the like already lost the modest meaning and are only used as plural suffixes. Verbs and formal verbs have the most important role in modest expressions in Japanese: the former almost goes through courteous expressions, the latter has the most typical form "O" [お] verbal+"SURU" [する], which showed courteous expression and confusion with honorifics. I could confirm from this study that misuse and confusion of modest expressions in Japanese are not one of temporary phenomena but changing phenomena of honorific system of courteous expressions or decline.
