        Beyond the Single Story: Reading Beliefs, Behaviors, and Readability

        The purpose of this study is to investigate what reading beliefs Korean primary school L2 readers possess and how their reading beliefs are related to their reading behaviors and readability among the multiple stories. Though current literature in L2 reading has focused on great interest in the reading comprehension of a single story or text, little interest was given to L2 readers' conceptions and readability among the multiple stories. The researcher first diagnoses four Korean primary school readers' reading beliefs, followed by story retelling to investigate their reading behaviors. Finally, their readability and its criteria are examined after reading five stories. School instructions or home literacy environments in English reading could influence L2 readers' reading beliefs and behaviors which might in turn be associated with their readability among the multiple stories. The results showed that L2 readers have their own reading beliefs and behaviors, which are influenced by their school instructions. In addition, Korean EFL readers' reading beliefs and behaviors were strongly connected with their readability among the multiple stories.

        An exploratory study of university EFL students’ participation in CBI

        A substantial body of research in ESL contexts has investigated how content-based instructions (CBI) have contributed to both content and L2 language learning, but there has been little research to investigate the effects of CBI on EFL, especially in Korean university contexts. This study addresses students’ participations in CBI classroom by investigating their attention, motivational intensity, persistence, anxiety, willingness to communicate (WTC), and self-confidence in the classroom through the questionnaires before and after the instruction. The findings showed that the students in the CBI class paid more attention to the lesson than those in the Korean-medium one did. However, the students, especially at low-level, had trouble understanding the lesson, and the students with previous CBI experience were better accustomed to the CBI. In addition, the students reported their improvement in listening and speaking skills after CBI. This finding suggests the beneficial effects of CBI in Korean university EFL contexts.

        The Role of Dictogloss on Both Listening and Grammar

        Over the last two decades, research has demonstrated that attention through focus-on-form instructions plays a key role in L2 acquisition. One special type of focus-on-form instructions, dictogloss, involves understanding the text as well as learning the target language feature. Most of the studies, however, have exclusively focused on the effects of focus-on-form instructions on the acquisition of the target language feature. This study examined the effects of dictogloss on both listening comprehension and grammar learning, compared with the traditional focus-on-formS. The study found that the dictogloss instruction was beneficial to Korean EFL learners on both listening and grammar learning in total. However, it seemed that the beneficial effects of dictogloss were influenced by students’ proficiency levels. One one hand, the low level students could be constrained by a limited processing capacity during the task. In other words, they had difficulty in reconstructing the text while focusing on listening comprehension. On the other hand, the high level students’ achievement was influenced by their motivational factors such attention, intensity, persistence, and WTC (Willingness to Comprehend). Finally, students’ motivational factors were positively correlated with dictogloss, but negatively with the traditional focus-on-formS. Pedagogical implications were discussed.

        한국 영어 학습자의 관점에서 본 통합과 분리 형태초점교수법

        본 연구의 목적은 한국대학생의 통합과 분리 형태초점 교수법에 대한 견해를 조사하고, 이러한 견해가 집중도와 문법학습의 믿음과 어떠한 상관관계가 있는 지, 추가적으로 수준별 성별 차이점을 조사하는 것이다. 본 연구의 목적을 위해서 서울소재 대학생 157명을 대상으로 실시한 설문지 조사 결과를 상관관계분석과 T 검정을 사용하여 분석하였다. 참여 학생들은 통합 형태초점교수법을 선호하는 것으로 나타났으며, 통합 형태초점교수법의 선호도는 학습자의 영어 수업시간의 집중도와 영어 수준과 유의미하게 연관성이 있다는 것을 보여준다. 다른 한편으로 분리 형태초점 교수법의 선호도는 학습자의 문법에 대한 믿음과 유의미한 상관관계를 보여주었고 수준별 성별로 모든 학생들이 공통적인 결과로 나타났다. 결론적으로 통합 형태초점 교수법은 학습자의 집중도와 영어 수준에, 분리 형태초점 교수법은 학습자의 문법 학습에 대한 믿음에 영향을 받는다는 것을 알 수 있다. 결론적으로 교실현장에서 통합 형태초점교수법을 사용할 필요하며, 이러한 접근도 학습자의 수준과 집중도를 고려할 필요가 있다는 것을 보여준다. The present study aims to investigate how Korean EFL learners’ views of form-focused instruction, integrated and isolated FFI (form-focused instruction), are related to their beliefs about grammar and attention and how different these relationships are between high and low proficiency levels and between males and females in Korean college contexts. The findings indicated the participants’ strong preference for integrated FFI, which was significantly correlated with two factors, attention in English class and English proficiency. On the other hand, the isolated FFI was strongly correlated with their beliefs about grammar learning, that is, independent learning of grammar and importance of learning grammar rules. In conclusion, the integrated FFI was associated with students’ proficiency and attention, while the isolated FFI was related to their views of grammar learning. In conclusion, it is suggested that we need to use integrated FFI in Korean EFL contexts considering students’ levels of proficiency and attention.

        하수도 시스템 유무에 따른 강우유출특성 분석 - 팔당호 유역을 대상으로

        토지이용이 혼재되고 하수관거 시스템이 미흡한 유역의 강우유출 특성을 파악하는 것은 매우 어렵다. 본 연구에서는 팔당호 유역에서 토지 이용 및 하수관거 형태에 따른 강우 유출 특성을 파악하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 팔당호유역 7개 시·군에서 공공 하수관거 시스템 지역 48개소, 개인하수처리시설 지역 28개소에 대한 강우 유출수 모니터링을 실시하였다. 개인하수처리시설 지역의 토지 이용은 산림과 논의 비율이 높았으며 SS, TN, TP EMCs와 초기세척 강도가 공공하수처리지역에 비해 높게 나타났다. 또한 초기강우 차집 시스템을 설치하여 초기강우 유출수 43%를 처리할 경우 59%의 TP 유출부하량을 저감할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. 개인하수처리시설이 설치된 지역에서 강우량 및 강우지속시간과 영양염류 유출 부하량은 양의 상관관계 (R>0.6)를 나타내어 팔당호의 부영양화 문제를 관리하기 위해 개인하수처리지역에 대한 우선적 정책이 필요함을 알수 있다. The characterization of stormwater runoff from mix land-use catchments with an inadequate sewer network is a challenge. This study focused on characterizing stormwater runoff from the Paldang watershed area based on land-use type and sewer system coverage. A total of 76 sites were monitored during wet weather from seven different counties within Paldang watershed. Public sewer system (PSS) was installed at 48 sites, while 28 sites had no or individual sewer system (ISS) coverage. The results indicated that the sites included in the ISS group with higher forest and paddy land-use percentage exhibit higher values of average event mean concentrations (EMCs) and first flush intensity for suspended solids (SS), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorous (TP). In addition, upgrading runoff interception system can capture 59 % of the TP load in the first 43% of runoff within these sites. Similarly, rainfall depth and storm duration showed a positive correlation (R > 0.6) with nutrient loads within ISS group sites, as compared to PSS group. Therefore, these sites are likely to contribute higher TP and TN loads during heavier storm events and should be selected as priority management areas to combat the problem of eutrophication in Paldang reservoir.

        루이스 부뉴엘의 멕시코 시기 영화 연구 -자연주의와 반복성 개념을 중심으로

        본 연구는 루이스 부뉴엘의 멕시코 시기 영화를 ‘자연주의’와 ‘반복성’ 개념에 기초해서 분석해보았다. 그리고 이 개념들을 통해서 부뉴엘 영화의 전복적 성격에 대해 연구해보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 들뢰즈의『시네마Ⅰ: 운동-이미지』의「충동-이미지」장을 중점적으로 다루었다. 이 장은 부뉴엘의 영화가 원초적 공간을 상정하면서 감각을 회복시키는 예술 본연의 기능을 하고 있다는 것에 주목했다. 그리고 이러한 기능을 그의 또 다른 저서인 『차이와 반복』에서의 ‘반복의 전복성’과 연관 지어 보았다. 또한 들뢰즈의 『차이와 반복』을 중심으로 반복의 3가지 차원, 즉, ‘습관으로서의 반복’, ‘기억으로서의 반복’ 그리고 ‘영원회귀로서의 반복’을 적용하여, ‘영원회귀로서의 반복’이 부뉴엘의 멕시코 시기 영화인 <절멸의 천사>에서 어떻게 전복적 요소로 연결될 수 있는지에 대해 논의해 보았다. This thesis paid attention to Bunuel`s film from two perspectives; Naturalism and Repetition. Naturalism is a trend to describe Bunuel`s films during the Mexican period. His films during the Mexican period introduced the basic world and displayed cruelty in the world intactly. That place is ruled by civilized human`s instinct rather than reason. Bunuel correlated it with his films or furthermore, visualized Eros and Thanatos`s latent desires. This corresponds with Deleuze`s thought. Deleuze reads ``The Impulse-Image``, taking notice of this in Bunuel`s films. Another concept is repetition. Repetition has been pursued by philosophers including Kierkegaard and Nietzsche in the history of philosophy. However, Gilles Deleuze is the first one who understood the concept of repetition as a principle of dynamic life that creates differences. He lent weight to subversive power of repetition. Bunuel`s film in the Mexican period, ‘The Exterminating Angel’ is what expresses this power as an image. ‘The Exterminating Angel’ demonstrates that huge subversive power is generated when power of repetition is visibly implemented on the basis of naturalism in Bunuel`s film.

        An Exploratory Study on the Effects of Pre- and Post-Korean (L1) Summary on CBI

        This article reports on an exploratory study on 24 university students' learning of content knowledge in the content-based instruction (CBI). Previous studies on CBI have exclusively focused on whether to use CBI or not, rather than on how to teach CBI. The purpose of this study is to examine the treatment effects of pre- and post-Korean (L1) summary on the content-based instruction. The findings showed that CBI preceded by Korean summary was positively related to low level students, while CBI followed by Korean summary, to high level students. In addition, most of the students, especially, high level students, paid more attention to the CBI instruction when followed rather than preceded by Korean summary. The educational implication will be discussed.
