이 논문은 곰이라는 러시아의 이미지가 수세기에 걸쳐 편견과 고정관념으로 채색되어 왔으며, 상투적으로 왜곡되어 왔다는 주장에 근거를 제시하고 있다. 이런 이미지는 역사적으로 러시아의 혹독한 기후, 통치자들의 잔인한 전제주의, 민중의 순응주의를 전달하는 많은 여행자들과 관찰자들의 증언에 근거하고 있다. 러시아는 이런 부정적 이미지를 바꾸는데 어느 정도 성공했지만, 수세기에 걸쳐 러시아는 곰이라는 이미지에 익숙한 서구사회에서는 불가능한 일로 보인다. 미국인의 눈에 비춰진 러시아에 대한 이미지는 붉은 광장(39%), AK47 소총(31.2%), 마뜨료쉬까(23.4%)보다도 곰이 제1순위(41.6%)를 점하고 있다. 곰과 러시아는 함께 쓰이는 결합어이고, 부정적 지표로서 사용되고 있다. 미국인에게 곰은 호전성, 가혹함, 야만성을 의미하기 때문이다. 수세기 동안 걸쳐 형성된 곰에 대한 부정적 이미지를 개선하기 위해 그 형성 과정을 살펴보는 것은 의미 있는 작업이다. The article gives grounds for the statement that current image of Russia as a Bear is largely colored by prejudice and stereotype of last centuries and often distorted to a cliché. The image has its roots in observations by many travelers and observers in historic times reporting on the Russia’s severe climate, cruel despotism of its rulers and the submissiveness of the common people. Сhanging the negative image of Russia in the country itself may be partly successful but in the Western world is a nearly impossible task, as the latter is being based on the centuries old image of the Russian Bear. Under the american eyes, the images of Russia are bears(41.6%), the Red Square(39%), AK47 rifle(31.2%), Matreshka(23.4%). Bears and Russia are connective words and they are used in negative connotations such as aggressiveness, cruelty and barbarism. It is a meaningful tast that to look at the formation process of the negative image of Russian bear which has been created in the last several centuries.
