Here in this study, we isolated 1,2,3,4,6-penta-O-galloyl-β-D-glucose (PGG) from Curcuma longa L. and elucidated the lifespanextending effect of PGG using Caenorhabditis elegans model system. In the present study, PGG demonstrated potent lifespan extension of worms under normal culture condition. Then, we determined the protective effects of PGG on the stress conditions such as thermal and oxidative stress. In the case of heat stress, PGG-treated worms exhibited enhanced survival rate, compared to control worms. In addition, PGG-fed worms lived longer than control worms under oxidative stress induced by paraquat. To verify the possible mechanism of PGG-mediated increased lifespan and stress resistance of worms, we investigated whether PGG might alter superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities and intracellular ROS levels. Our results showed that PGG was able to elevate SOD activities of worms and reduce intracellular ROS accumulation in a dose-dependent manner.
Antioxidative Constituents of the Aerial Parts of Galium spurium

As part of an ongoing search for natural plants with antioxidant compounds by measuring the radical scavenging effect on 1,1-diphenyl- 2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), a total extract of the twigs of Galium spurium L. (Rubiaceae) was found to show potent antioxidant activity. Subsequent activity-guided fractionation of the methanolic extract led to the isolation of nine compounds, asperulosidic acid methyl ester (1), asperuloside (2), caffeic acid (3), kaempferol-3-O-L-rhamnopyranoside (4), quercetin-3-O-[α-Lrhamnopyranosyl(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside] (5), isorhamnetin-3-O-glucopyranoside (6), quercetin-3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside (7), kaempferol-3-O-[α-L-rhamnopyranosyl(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside] (8), and quercetin (9). Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic studies. Compounds 1, 3-8 were isolated for the first time from this plant. Among them, compounds 3 and 9 showed the significant radical scavenging effects on DPPH, and compounds 3 and 7 showed the potent riboflavin originated superoxide quenching activities.

Removal of volatile fatty acids in anaerobic digestion of organic wastes can accelerate eventual decomposition of organic wastes to CO2 and H2O using a recovery of electric energy by a microbial fuel cell. The fuel cell anode chamber was a 10 cm (I.D.)×20 cm long cylindrical Plexiglass having an ion ceramic cylinder separator (I.D.10 mm, O.D.12 mm, 0.3 μm average pore size). The aluminum foil cathode (12 cm2 surface area) was located inside the ceramic cylinder. Between the two cylinders, 1 liter of activated carbon particles was packed as anode electrode having a void fraction of 0.4. This fuel cell was connected to a 5 liter bioreactor (working volume 1.5 liter), and the bioreactor was run in batch mode by re-circulating a synthetic wastewater of 5 g/L glucose. Maximum TVFA (total volatile fatty acids) and SCOD (soluble chemical oxygen demand) removal rate were 3.79 g/L·day, 5.88 g/L·day, respectively. TVFA removal efficiency (92.7%) and SCOD removal efficiency (94.7%) under maximum current density operation were higher than the operation with maximum power density. In acid fermentation, butyric acid concentration was highest because Clostridium butyricum was a dominant microbial communitiy in the inoculum. The microbial cells collected from the anode bio-film samples were affiliated with Bacillus cereus based on the nucleotide sequences of dominant DGGE (denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis) bands.

Objectives This study was aimed to develop the clinical practice guideline for Soyangin symptomatology. It discussed the principle and method of application of clinical practice guideline for Soyangin symptomatology which focuses on symptomatology, not disease. Methods Based on the previous guidelines, we assessed the guidelines by Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation (AGREE II). After AGREE II assessment, we chose and revised the clinical practice guideline. Member of writing committee reviewed and examined "Donguisusebowon" and many articles for developing clinical practice guidelines. Draft of clinical practice guideline was reviewed by advisory committee and approved by Society of Sasang Constitutional Medicine. Results & Conclusions By researching and discussing the Soyangin symptomatology, we establish the evaluation criteria for diagnosis including classification, definition and develop diagnostic algorithm and treatment assessing tool.

Methods Donguisusebowon and many articles were reviewed and examined for developing clinical practice guidelines. Among the previous guidelines, we assessed the guidelines by Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation (AGREE II). After AGREE II assessment, we chose and revised the clinical practice guideline. Results and Conclusions By researching and discussing the Taeeumin, Taeyangin symptomatology, we make the principle of the clinical practice guideline, including classification, definition, algorithm, and treatment assessing tool.
