Edina Obed Mgunda

        RANK : 232319

This qualitative phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of international students in the Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP), focusing on the multi-cultural sensitivity in higher educational settings. The research questions that guided this study were; the main question was what do KGSP international students experience while pursuing their graduate-level degrees in South Korea? The sub-questions included 1. What motivated students to choose graduate programs in South Korea? 2. What are the major challenges/difficulties faced by KGSP graduate students, hindering them in achieving their goals? 3. What are the coping strategies utilized by students to overcome these difficulties? 4. What would students like to see changed? In the existing literature, many studies have explored the challenges experienced by international students in different countries. However, despite the world’s interest in the topic of international students’ adjustment, few studies have been conducted in Korea. This is particularly, international students in the KGSP. Lack of research leaves the government, higher education institutions, community social workers, and other helping professionals uninformed about the needs of international students. Therefore, this study sought to fill the gaps in the existing knowledge about international students’ adjustment. This study utilized a qualitative research approach to gain a detailed understanding of a representation of participants’ experiences. Fifteen (15) international students were recruited using the snowball technique. Using semi-structured protocol with several open-ended questions, participants were interviewed face-to-face for approximately an hour per person, which proceeded until saturation of data. Findings revealed that international students experienced language barriers, lack or limited interaction, cultural differences, discrimination, and financial challenges while adjusting to the Korean culture and environment. The study provides key implication for practice and policies, as well as, future research. Keywords: international student, multi-cultural sensitivity, KGSP

      • Conceptualizing Multicultural Counseling Competence for International Students in Korea : a Focus on University Counseling Centers and Counselors

This study used an idiographic research design using the concept mapping methodology to explore a very specific, unstudied topic. Specifically, this study helped raise the understanding of how counselors think about the construct of multicultural counseling competence required for international student counseling. Considering the importance of engaging the counseling center in vitalizing international student counseling, the study examined the institutional-level competence of university centers in addition to the individual-level competence of counselors. Ideas obtained from brainstorming interviews of 11 counselors were turned into specific behavioral indicator statements of multicultural competence for international student counseling (48 for university centers, 78 for counselors). Subsequently, 13 counselors categorized these statements on the basis of relatedness and their cluster solutions summed up to create the group similarity matrices for the center competence and counselor competence. Through multivariate concept-mapping statistical analyses, the center competence indicators were organized into five clusters along two dimensions, and the counselor competence indicators were structured into six clusters along two dimensions. Each competence indicator statement was rated for importance and degree of execution. Specifically, the concept map for multicultural counseling competence of university counseling centers working with international students shows 48 competence indicator statements grouped into five clusters laid out on a 2-dimensional map. Dimension 1 (X-axis) describes the target of institutional support provided by the university counselor center. Specifically, statements that involved client support were placed in the right sector of the map, and statements that involved counselor support factor were placed in the left sector of the map. Dimension 2 (Y-axis) describes the capacity of the center. Specifically, the upper half of the map is comprised of items dealing with internal capacity (utilizing in-house resources to enhance international student counseling), while the bottom half includes statements dealing with external capacity (utilizing outside resources to enhance international student counseling). The five categories of center competence for international student counseling were: (1) Engaging in active partnership/advocacy for sustainability, (2) Providing counselor support, (3) Creating International Student-Friendly Place, (4) Reaching out to international students, and (5) Diversifying counseling services. As for the concept map for multicultural counseling competence of counselors working with international students, 78 competence indicator statements were grouped into six clusters laid out on a 2-dimensional map. The two dimensions that characterized this map were the source of counselor capacity (Dimension 1) and the direction of counselor efforts (Dimension 2). The six categories of counselor competence for international student counseling were: (1) Sustaining awareness, attitude, abilities for international student counseling, (2) Acquiring knowledge to understand international students, (3) Utilizing culturally responsive counseling strategies, (4) Employing procedural strategies to create an open and supportive environment, (5) Engaging in extended roles, and (6) Practicing self-care and professional development. This study represents the first formal research attempt to systematically examine the multicultural competence of university counseling centers and counselors working with international students. The number of international students on Korean university campuses will continue to increase and their need for counseling services present real challenges. Accessible and appropriate counseling services provided by competent university counseling centers and counselors will play a pivotal role in helping international students as they deal with diverse issues related to adapting to a new cultural and academic environment. To date, university counseling centers and counselors in Korea and elsewhere in the world are not equipped with practical guidelines, trainings, or resources to work with this special population. This study will serve as a foundational starting point in the efforts to increase greater proficiency and to improve counseling outcomes for international students. The scope of this study was to look at the multicultural competence of both the university counseling centers and counselors; it is hoped that the university counseling centers and counselors move forward together in advancing the much-needed international student counseling services.

      • Academic Adjustment of International Students in South Korea: A Case Study of Seoul National University

        RANK : 232319

This thesis examines the academic adjustment of international students at Seoul National University, focusing on the expectations of international students in prior to enrolling to Seoul National University and how those expectations affect their adjustment in the academic context. Previously there are many studies that investigated on the adjustment of international students in different countries especially, USA, which is the country with the highest number of incoming international students. Previous studies point out the issues and challenges that international students faced after arriving to the host university. On the other hand, the purpose of this study is to explore on the expectations of international students before enrolling to Seoul National University and what role do those expectations play in the adjustment of international students. Using Qualitative method, five international students from the college of education were invited to participate in this research through snowball sampling. In-depth semi-structured interviews from 40 – 60 minutes were conducted, three times from each participant. Major findings of the study include students with wrong expectations had greater disappointment which led them to have thoughts of dropping out of the academic program. On the other hand, students with right expectations adjusted well in the academic setting. Moreover, Lysgaard’s U-Curve theory which was used as a theoretical framework was not applicable to all students since international students had different stages of adjustment based on their characteristics.

      • International Students in Higher Education in Korea: Motivation and Services for Success

Julie Ahn

        RANK : 232319

Korea has experienced a recent increase in international student enrollment in higher educational institutions. The government of the Republic of Korea (henceforth, Korea) has encouraged this trend for its own policy and economic reasons. Another major internal pressure is the decreasing birthrate as a result declining domestic student population, which has put pressure of higher education institutions to increase enrollments through recruitment of international students. But, given the services of Korean higher education institutions for these international students, can the Korean higher education institutions continue to attract international students? What are international students’ views of support for their student goals within Korean higher education institutions? This is the question that drives this research. This study reveals where international students reveal gaps in support services they perceive are necessary or desirable for them to have a successful academic or professional outcomes of their studies. The purpose of this study then is to use analysis of these expectations as a guide both for higher educational policies and services and also to reveal the efficacy of Korean higher education national policy. This study took place at a private university in Seoul, Korea. This institution was chosen because about 80% of the universities in Korea are private. The institution chosen is in the middle of finding ways to increase and maintain its rank and is struggling financially due to it being cash strapped. Through a descriptive survey of 121 international students, 11 interviews of international students and references from the university professors, and document analysis, a better understanding of international students’ experiences and what internationalization looks like in South Korea is reviewed. The countries that the international students were interviewed include countries from Chile, China, India, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Rwanda, Singapore, Vietnam, and the United States. The findings show that when international students are considering which country and school to choose for their studies, they consider many different factors and they embed social imaginary within the context of internationalization and globalization. Also, the findings show that international students have a difficult time with language and have expectations from the school in supporting their academic needs and for social issues. They have no expectations and prefer to build social relationships on their own. Lastly, the universities and Korea need to strategize in providing after graduation options, as many international students would like to have some sort of work or internship experience before leaving Korea. If planned well, it can be an opportunity to utilize international students as future human resources to support to country’s economic competitiveness and also to achieve its goals of internationalizing the context of higher education. Higher education institutions can benefit as well, by staying competitive for attracting and maintain international student enrollment.

      • Understading digital intimacy and personal well-being through sharing Memes : An analysis of international students in Korea

Lentera Paramuswari

        RANK : 232319

This study aims to explore the motivations behind international students' memes-sharing behavior with their significant others, examine the relationship between memes-sharing and personal well-being, also their digital intimacy with their friends. This study was conducted through semi-structured in-depth interviews and analyzed through thematic analysis. The author used snowball sampling as the sampling technique and 20 international students who are currently and had studied in Seoul area Universities. The study identified four motivations for sharing memes: fostering bonds, spreading joy, expressing emotions that cannot be conveyed by words, and altruism. International students share memes that reflect their life problems in Korea, serving as a healing instrument to release stress and elevate mood through laughter about their issues. Furthermore, sharing memes contributes to enhancing self-acceptance and providing social support, fostering a sense of belonging within a community that shares similar problems. Three criteria influence people's decision to share memes: familiarity, relatedness, and a similar sense of humor. By understanding and applying these criteria, participants remember and comprehend their friends, maintaining and strengthening their relationships, thereby demonstrating improvements in digital intimacy.

      • (The) determinants of worldwide international student mobility in higher education : a gravity model appoach

        RANK : 232319

The increase in international student mobility worldwide suggests that research in this field of study is growing in significance. This paper examines the overall international student mobility patterns and explores into the theoretical predictions on what factors determine the international student migration flows. The primary purpose of this paper is to investigate the empirical determinants affecting the flow of international students in higher education across nations at a worldwide scale, by means of an econometric regression analysis. The secondary purpose is to give tentative policy recommendations which could contribute to the promotion of international student mobility and the internationalization of higher education for countries, both as host and home countries. Traditionally, a large part of the previous higher education empirical studies using econometric methods has been concerned with flows of students from developing countries to industrialized countries or focused on single-country (typically the United States) or countries clustered according to their characteristics. Taking this fact into account, this study makes its own distinctive contribution to the existing literature by tackling worldwide-level ISM (International Student Mobility), taking into consideration 50 both developed and lesser-developed countries as host and home countries. Using pooled cross-sectional time series data over the time period of 1999-2009, this paper estimates an econometric model of international student flows worldwide. The total bilateral flows of students between 50 countries are set as dependent variables. The gravity model is used to reveal the factors determining foreign students’ flows in higher education. A mixture of both economic and non-economic, macro and micro, traditional and innovative variables were tested such as: GDP per capita, unemployment and inflation rate (as proxy for market size and stability), the number of national higher educational institutions in the Academic Ranking of World Universities and R&D expenditure (as proxies for quality of education). Distance, both physical and cultural, was also factored into the equation. Dummy variables such as Common border, Common language, Colonial ties in the past, etc. were tested to find out whether they are important predictors of international students’ flows. Many variables were found to have significant influence on the flow of international students. Based on the findings, this paper concludes with a discussion of the implications for international student mobility and higher education.

        Lu Wei

• International students' reconstruction of their experiences in South Korea

Narcy, Mai Linh Aurelia

        RANK : 232319

Academic discussions have largely left out international students as having an active role in the process of their development. Using grounded theory methodology, this study illuminates the individual interpretations that international students make through interacting with local students, other international students, faculty, the university administration, and the local society in South Korea. It was found that international students undergo the process of inner reconstruction when the interpretations clashed with their existing knowledge construct. From this reconstruction process, the international students then respond back to the environment in a way that fits the changed knowledge construct. This study's findings support the transformative learning theory. This study also shows the international students' responses to the environment by rejecting local norms, becoming passive or giving up, or becoming assertive and trying to maintain control.

      • SOCIAL SUPPORT FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS : A STUDY ON A KOREAN COLLEGE CAMPUS

Munkhgerel Enkhjargal Graduate School of UNIST 2018

        RANK : 232317

This study examined UNIST international students’ satisfaction rate in both academic and social life on campus. International students face many challenges such as culture shock, language difficulty, homesickness and difficulty in academic life. In order to overcome these challenges, students have adopted resources that mainly are derived from the university to overcome these challenges. Thus, as demonstrated in this study, having a better understanding of these students’ academic challenges, university faculty and staff can recognize students’ needs and effectively offer supportive campus resources and services. This study also suggests that some preparations need to be made by the university that will embrace international students upon their arrival. I have two hypotheses to explain the international students’ overall experience and perception about their college life. Results demonstrate that assistance in transition, student support, and professor support have significant positive effects on university’s service for international students and overall experience.
