Spin, like mass and electric charge, is a fundamental property of all particles. The spin of composite particles such as the proton must be generated from the intrinsic spins and orbital motions of its constituents, and the question of how the quarks and gluons inside the proton contribute to its total spin remains one of the most important unresolved questions in nuclear physics. While the contribution from the quark spins is well known, the gluon and angular momentum components are poorly constrained. Measurements of di-jet asymmetries arising from longitudinally polarized proton-proton collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) offer a unique way to probe the intrinsic gluon spin contribution to the spin of the proton. The measurements of the di-jet cross section, as well as the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry, ALL, are presented. The cross section and ALL results are based on 17.1 pb-1 and 19.5 pb-1, respectively, of data taken by the STAR detector during the 2009 proton-proton run at √s = 200 GeV. The measured cross section is in good agreement with perturbative QCD theoretical predictions using the CTEQ6M parton distribution functions and the ALL is consistent with previous inclusive jet results obtained from the 2009 data.

Many of the works of Dominick Argento have been researched and analyzed, but his choral work Evensong: Of Love and Angels has received limited attention thus far. Written in memoriam for his wife Carolyn Bailey Argento, Evensong draws its musical material from her initials C.B.A. These letters, translated into note names, form a conspicuous head motive that is present in each movement of the work, and it serves multiple functions: as a melodic feature, as the foundation for a twelve-tone row, and as a harmonic base. This paper provides an overview of the work's conception with specific relation to Argento's biographical details, compositional style, and work habits; a brief review of the critical reception of the work; and a succinct analysis of the form and cyclical materials found in each movement.

This dissertation brings current theoretical understandings of the relationship between religion, gender, and ecology to bear upon a socio-historical analysis of the evolution of the U.S. Grail at its main center in southwestern Ohio called Grailville. Founded in the Netherlands in the 1920s, the Grail today is a small international women's movement with a spirit of high idealism and deep roots in the Roman Catholic tradition. Grailville, a partially converted old farm on 300 acres of land, has been the organizational heart of the U.S. Grail since 1944. A genealogy of ecofeminism at Grailville demonstrates that the roots of ecofeminism extend farther back than, and well beyond the bounds of, the radical political movements of the 1970s and 80s with which it is commonly identified. Proceeding in reverse chronological order and drawing on archival and ethnographic sources, the dissertation examines the emergence of ecofeminism at Grailville in the late 1970s through 90s and then the mid-century forms of praxis that facilitated that emergence. At Grailville in the 1940s and 50s, women cobbled together new ideological variants out of the discourses of surrendering womanhood, valiant lay sainthood, and Catholic rural life. Although explicitly opposed to feminism and endorsing an instrumentalist appraisal of nature, the Grail's early ideals of valiant Catholic womanhood and Catholic rural life---when deliberately "lived" at Grailville---cultivated modes of subjectivity that emerged later as forms of feminism, environmentalism, and ecofeminism. This study complements work already done on the U.S. Grail and Grailville by focusing on the persistent emphases on women and the land and on the longstanding effort to "make ideas live." In doing so, it establishes Grailville as an important site of pre-conciliar Catholic agrarianism as well as later forms of ecofeminism, and it places Grailville along the spectrum of U.S. forms of "lived religion." With respect to the interdisciplinary study of religion, gender, and ecology, the dissertation makes several contributions. It deepens and broadens scholarly accounts of ecofeminism; it demonstrates the importance of historical, ethnographic, and case-study approaches; and it highlights the eco-social implications of understanding embodied practice---including ritual practice---as pedagogical and normative.

The purpose of this research study was to develop a set of guidelines for managing curricular conflicts in an elementary division of an independent school for girls. A curricular conflict is defined as a disagreement among school constituents over curricular issues. Methods. A qualitative research design was used. The research was conducted in three phases. In Phase One, the author, the head of a lower school for twenty-five years, reconstructed from the school archives and from personal notes all of the substantial curricular conflicts of the period 1982--2006. These reconstructed disagreements and the ways they had been managed were then analyzed in an attempt to understand the conflict issues within the contextual structures of an independent school. This information was then used in Phase Two as a basis for selecting from the general conflict resolution literature twenty-two potentially useful guidelines for managing curricular conflicts. In Phase Three, one of the recent curricular conflicts was treated with the recommended guidelines. Main findings. (1) Curricular conflicts are a phenomenon inherent to the sociocultural structures of independent schools. (2) Most curricular conflicts can be seen as representing the tension between the more traditional and the more contemporary opponent positions. (3) Resistance is a normal reaction to a curricular change. (4) There is no evidence that curricular conflicts were associated with the diversity of the population. (5) The recommended guidelines emphasize: (a) the analysis of the opponents' values; (b) an assessment of the readiness for change; (c) the reduction of the opponent values prior to change; (d) conformity with independent school cultural values; (e) objective criteria and evidence-based whenever possible; (f) the importance of understanding resistance to change. (6) Curricular conflicts can have constructive effects, which can stimulate creative solutions. The issue of the validity of the guidelines was examined. Curricular knowledge and conflict resolution skills are important ingredients of an educational leader's armamentarium. The study concludes with a conceptual model depicting the educational, social, cultural and economic areas of concern that an educational leader should consider when dealing with curricular conflicts.

      • Local matters: Race, place, and community politics after the Civil War

This study examines how a seemingly disparate population of rural migrants was able to incorporate itself into the political process and elevate community concerns to the center of political discourse after the Civil War. Too often scholars pay little attention to the local concerns and historical processes that determined not only how former slaves conducted themselves in the political arena, but also how their goals and aspirations changed over time. Surrounded by majority slaveholding counties in the Mid-South, Memphis provides an opportunity to study the grassroots political mobilization of former slaves. Beginning with an examination of the wartime migrations of enslaved men and women in the Mississippi River Valley to Memphis, Tennessee, this study identifies the cooperative strategies black migrants utilized to express their freedom, forge new bonds of fellowship, and establish a sense of community in their new surroundings. In order to understand how the concerns of former slaves became a matter of public interest, I trace the movements and daily interactions of members of social networks within black neighborhoods to demonstrate how socialization and civic life influenced the contours of popular politics. While black political leaders focused on civil rights and the transformation of the social order, former slaves used politics to experience freedom and express their desire for self-determination in ways that demonstrated their level of attachment to their community. By focusing upon these social and spatially based networks, this study seeks to broaden our historical understanding of the connection between civic life and political participation in an urban setting. An examination of former slaves' cooperative associations reveals a variety of personal connections that transcended material conditions and long-term or migrant status. African American residential activities, leisure interests, and personal familiarity established a feeling of connectedness in their neighborhoods that became the basis for the development of political strategies. These social attributes, therefore, become a way to reconsider the shifting political alliances that characterized post-Civil War southern politics. African Americans were willing to forge alliances with ethnic minorities and ex-Confederates that reflected their sense of belonging in their respective communities and elevated local concerns to the center of public debate. In the end, my study challenges historians to consider looking beyond questions of race, class, and gender to explain black southerners' participation in the public sphere. African Americans responded to multiple issues that allowed them to carve out a middle ground. In Memphis, African Americans relied upon neighborhood associations to foster a consultative model of local self-governance designed to not only elect their own representatives to local office, but also to articulate their desire for self-determination by ensuring their right to secure their material well-being, protect friends and families from violence, and educate children in their own neighborhoods. An examination of neighborhood life, the central role of black sodalities in popular politics, and electoral behavior, therefore, demonstrates former slaves' willingness to eschew long-term political objectives for short-term goals to protect the social integrity of their new communities.

This research effort investigated chemical countermeasure use in near-shore environments. Currently, there are regulatory constraints on the near-shore use of dispersants, one type of countermeasure. Shoreline cleaners, another countermeasure type, were also investigated. There has been minimal shoreline cleaner testing in wetlands and sandy beaches. More scientific research is needed to address these issues. A fundamental laboratory-scale study investigated hydrocarbon solubility in petroleum/water systems. The predominant mechanisms were dissolution and colloidal oil. The aqueous dissolution of petroleum hydrocarbons was much lower than published solubilities and could be predicted using a modified Raoult's law. A second laboratory study examined the potential of a biosurfactant and a synthetic surfactant for enhancing the solubility of aromatic hydrocarbons in crude oil. The biosurfactant treatment significantly increased solubility (one to two orders of magnitude), as compared to the synthetic surfactant treatment. The dispersant research was conducted in a surf-zone setting (Shoreline Environmental Research Facility, wave tank facility) and in a wetland (San Jacinto Wetland Research Facility). The experimental design simulated a dispersed-oil plume. In the surf-zone experiment, a materials balance on the oil was calculated. In the dispersed-oil treatment, no oil accumulation was evident. The wetland study monitored chemically-dispersed oil concentrations in the sediments, analyzing the data for biotic and abiotic oil removal. When compared to the control treatment, there were no significant differences in biodegradation rates for the dispersed-oil treatments, but the amount of physical removal (flushing) was significantly different. The shoreline cleaner studies were also conducted at both research facilities. For the surf-zone experiment, the beaches were systematically oiled, two cleaners were tested for effectiveness, and an oil mass balance was determined. In one cleaner treatment, 75% of the oil from the beach substrate while in the second cleaner treatment, 25% of the oil was removed. Beach erosion factored in the effectiveness of the first cleaner. A shoreline cleaner was also tested on oiled wetland sediments. There were no significant differences in effectiveness or biodegradation rates, when compared to the control. Research is needed in field-scale dispersant effectiveness tests in near-shore environments; additional quantitative shoreline-cleaner tests in beach settings is also recommended.

CC Chemokine Ligand 2 (CCL2) is a potent mediator of the inflammatory response. Its functions include recruitment of monocytes to areas of inflammation where activation of resident cells leads to further production of CCL2 and exacerbation of the inflammatory process. An increase in expression of CCL2 has been associated with various inflammatory diseases including HIV associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND). In addition, a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) at position -2578 within the distal regulatory region of the CCL2 promoter has been associated with increased CCL2 expression in plasma and cerebral spinal fluid disease severity and progression in individuals with HIV infection. Despite the associations between this SNP and disease progression and severity of many inflammatory conditions, no mechanism explaining the link between CCL2 regulation and the disease phenotype has been proposed. We propose a mechanism for SNP mediated differential regulation of the CCL2 distal promoter and suggest its role in exacerbating the inflammatory process that leads to an increase in disease progression and severity. The -2578 G polymorphism creates a six base pair consensus binding site that is also an inverted repeat for three amino acid loop extension (TALE) proteins PREP1 and PBX2. We identify DNA/protein interactions between the CCL2 distal promoter, PREP1, and PBX2 using gel shift assays and these results are confirmed using chromatin Immunoprecipitation assays (ChIP). In addition, we confirm binding of HoxA9 and IRF1 to theses sites using ChIP. Binding of theses factors to the -2578 A allele, which has only one TALE site, result in transcriptional repression while two sites within the -2578 G allele leads to alleviation of that repression and a subsequent increase in CCL2 expression.
