미얀마 전통 인형극의 보존과 현대적 수용을 위한 연구 : 극의 전통적 원형과 무대시각화의 시대적 변천을 중심으로

'미얀마 전통 인형극‘에 대한 본 논문의 주된 목적은 긴 역사적 배경을 가진 미얀마 전통 문화유산과 미얀마 사람들의 마음속에 긍지로 자리 잡아 즐겨왔던 미얀마 전통 인형극의 원형을 연구하고 현대에까지 발전해온 모습을 탐구하여 이를 계속적으로 보존, 발전시켜나가는 방법을 연구해 보고자 하는 것이다. 따라서 고대로부터 오늘날에 이르기까지 계승된 미얀마 전통 인형극이 담고 있는 인문학적 주제에서부터 극장의 구조, 인형의 제작 등의 기술적인 문제, 그리고 극단이 처한 현재의 모습에 이르기까지 연구하여 그 대안을 찾아보고자 하였다. 실제로 고대 미얀마 왕조부터, 미얀마 인형의 상황은 정점에 다다랐으며 미얀마 사람들 사이에서 가장 대중적인 공연이었다. 더욱이 미얀마 인형극은 지난 수세기에 걸친 미얀마 역사에 근거했으며, 모든 계급과 대중들은 공연을 보면서 즐거워하고 명예로운 전통 공연예술로서 받아들여 왔다. 고대의 미얀마 왕들은 미얀마 인형극을 미얀마 전통 예술의 중요한 갈래로 중요하게 여기며 후원자 관계를 맺었다. 미얀마 왕국의 멸망과 함께, 인형극은 무서운 속도로 쇠퇴하기 시작했고 오늘날에 이르러 나이든 전통 인형극 세대는 거의 사라져가고 있다. 이러한 것은 지난 몇 십 년 동안에 요구되었던 후원자 관계의 결핍에 기인한다. 그로 말미암아 이 논문은 거의 빈사상태에 이른 예술이라고 이야기 하는 미얀마 전통 인형극을 전승해 나가고자 하는 절박함에서 시작된 것이다. 한 세대로부터 다른 세대로 전승한다는 점에서는 현재 존재하는 상황에 대해서는 발전이 필요하고 또 근원적으로 풍요로운 국민 특유의 특성들을 보존하는 것도 중요하다. 그래서 젊은이들이 그들 스스로 민족의 문화와 그의 특성을 보존하는 데에 참여하는 것이 매우 필요한 것이다. 한편 오늘날 세계화의 시대가 도래함으로써 현대의 세계에서 고도로 발달한 기술들, 예컨대 가라오케, 생방송 쇼, 영화 그 밖의 디지털 엔터테인먼트들이 오늘날 미얀마의 젊은이들을 압도하고, 미얀마 전통의 문화적인 자아를 위협하고 있다. 실제로 미얀마 예술과 문학은 윤리, 품행에 대한 법도, 규율, 관습, 미얀마 사회의 문화적인 전통, 고유의 민족정신에 대한 사랑, 그것을 존속하려는 좋은 전통의 실천 그리고 하나로부터 모두에 이르기까지 현명하고 온화해지도록 가르치는 미얀마 문화의 전통에 대한 장려를 이해하고 받아들이고 있다. 이러한 문화를 바탕으로 미얀마 인형극은 세계의 다른 인형들과 유형적으로 다르며 음악과 노래 그리고 공연에서의 춤이 한데 어우러져 조화롭게 조종해야만 하는 매우 독창적이고도 훈련이 필요한 어려운 공연이다. 과거 매우 존중되던 왕조시대에서는 단지 줄에 매달린 나무 인형이 아니라 인간의 분신과 같은 살아있는 것이었다. 실제로 나무 인형은 줄을 사용하고 조종되었는데 이 줄에 매달린 인형들은 아무 절묘한 무용가들처럼 춤을 췄다. 어려운 상황 속에서도 미약하나마 오늘날 미얀마 인형극이 미얀마의 춤과 음악, 조각, 세퀸 장식 그리고 회화와 같이 모든 예술작업을 포함함으로써 고유의 민족적 철학과 문화전통의 원형을 지켜나가고 있다는 것을 발견할 수 있었으며 이를 발전시켜나가야 할 의무와 책임이 우리에게 있다는 생각이 들었다. 논문을 마치며 항상 나를 격려해주신 한국예술종합학교의 교수님들, 논문을 위해 내가 필요한 정보와 자료들을 찾아준 나의 부인과 도움을 주신 여러분들에게 감사를 드린다. The main purpose of the thesis production is to study how to preserve Myanmar traditional marionette theater and to explore the various possible way of surviving in contemporary theater. The reason why Myanmar traditional marionette theater have been lived with Myanmar people as a daily entertainment and educational guide of life it had been developed not only as a theatrical art form but also as the humanities. With preserving both conceptual meaning of origin and artistic characters of the performance which identified with other puppet theater of the world, Myanmar traditional marionette theater should be developed today as a cultural heritage and pride of Myanmar people. Therefore focusing on the original theme of the Myanmar marionette theater, characters of Myanmar marionette, the type of performance and the structure of the stage had been studied through the history of Myanmar puppet theater to find the way of surviving today. Status of the Myanmar marionette had reached the highest peak and the most popular performance among the Myanmar people since the time of ancient Myanmar kingdom. Myanmar kings in ancient time had patronized the Myanmar marionette performance had been developed over the last centuries in Myanmar ancient history and had been enjoyed through all classes considering as an honorable traditional performing arts. With the fall of Myanmar dynasty, however, the marionette theater had been drastically declined. Traditional marionette with original form in general has almost faded away today. This is due to the lack of patronage and concern required during the last few decades. This study started from the realization of crisis that the traditional Myanmar marionette theater could be referred to as a bygone arts dying to next generation. Myanmar marionette theater faced on problems how to transform and to preserve the originally at the same time to attract the modern audience. It is necessary to develop as a contemporary form which can communicate with people today to survive. Moreover, it tis important to develop on the basis of its characteristic value which distinguished the Myanmar marionette theater from others. Due to advanced technology of today young generation in Myanmar has been surrounded by modern entertainment such as karaoke, live-shows, movies and other digital entertainments which brought cultural globalization of the world. It has threatened the traditional marionette theater. Marionettes were esteemed not merely as stringed wooden puppets but life-like human substitutes in the royal pastime. This stringed marionettes dance like subtle choreographers. The characteristic feature of Myanmar marionette is different from other puppets of the world and hard to control in harmony with the music, song and dance for the performance. It needs specific technical disciplines and study of literature which based on national mythology, Buddhism, and ethical value of life of Myanmar. It requires many performing artists to have patient to endure difficult discipline. Fortunately there is a movement to recognize human heritage from traditional cultures of the world. The performing marionettes of Myanmar are recognized as a beyond handcrafts to other countries nowadays because of artistic beauty with philosophical meanings such as wisdom of life from Buddha, love and pride of nation, harmony with people, animals and nature. It is visible and invisible cultural fortune which can exports to other countries. This thesis stared from the responsibility and duty to find the way to maintain and develop marionette theater of Myanmar in this situation. Myanmar marionette theater is combined arts reflecting other traditional arts such as dancing, music, sculpture, sequin embroidery and painting of Myanmar in one stage. It is a heritage of Myanmar and of the world. Young people will hand down this unique performance to next generation taking important roll to preserve national heritage with both traditional and contemporary sense. So, it is important for us to find ways to support and educate them to draw their attention to the traditional culture.
