ABSTRACT A Study on English Affixation and Vocabulary Classification Jeong, Seung-ok Advisor: Prof. Jo, Hak-haeng. Ph.D. Dept. of English Language & Literature Graduate School of Chosun University English education in the Korean classroom of the elementary and middle school now focuses on pronunciation and grammar, respectively. And in the high school, teaching vocabulary is limited to the rote memorization of the individual items required for only Scholastic Aptitude Test. As a result, learning vocabulary is relatively neglected in English teaching. So it is doubtful whether or not learners are taught vocabulary efficiently and systematically. The aim of language teaching and learning is to improve communication skills. In fact, we can communicate without grammatical knowledge but vocabulary is a very important element in conveying meaning. The purpose of this thesis is to provide English teachers with the general classificatory criterion between English derivation and inflection through the study of affixation, and a more efficient and systematic teaching method of vocabulary. This thesis is organized as follows: In Chapter 2, I will examine morpheme and word. In Chapter 3, I will provide the general classificatory criterion of derivation and inflection. In Chapter 4, I will provide a more efficient and systematic teaching method of vocabulary. Chapter 5 is a concluding summary of this thesis.

ABSTRACT A Study on the Exceptional Stress of English Noun by Lexical Accent An, Jin-hee Advisor: Prof. Jo, Hak-haeng Ph.D. Major in English Education Graduate School of Education, Chosun University The aim of this thesis is to investigate English noun stress in the framework of constraint-based theories. English noun stress has been a challenge to SPE's rule-based theory in dealing with the exceptional stress because of its arbitrariness of rule order. In this thesis, standard Optimality Theory (McCarthy & Prince 1993; Prince & Smolensky 1993, 2002), Lexical Constraint Domains (Itô & Mester 1995), Local Conjunction (Smolensky 1995; Kirchner 1996), Sympathy Theory (McCarthy 1999), and Stratal Optimality Theory (Kiparsky 2000; Collie 2007) are attempted to resolve this problem. However, there are also problems in them. To resolve the problems in the theories above, I attempt to solve the exceptional stress of English noun by employing Lexical Accent (Hammond 1999), which is another constraint-based theory. Based on Lexical Accent, this thesis examines and analyses the exceptional stress of English noun. By doing so, I will reveal that Lexical Accent can explain the exceptional stress of English noun more persuasively than any other theory. This thesis is organized as follows: In Chapter 1, I provide an introductory remark about this thesis. In Chapter 2, I examine stress and foot briefly. In Chapter 3, after outlining the stress of English noun, I point out the problem of the SPE's analysis. In Chapter 4, I explain the theoretical background of standard Optimality Theory. And then after analysing the exceptional stress of English noun in the frameworks of standard Optimality Theory, Lexical Constraint Domains, Local Conjunction, Sympathy Theory, and Stratal Optimality Theory, I point out the problems of constraint-based theories above. Chapter 5 is the main part of this thesis. In this chapter, I try to resolve the exceptional stress of English noun by utilizing Lexical Accent. By doing so, I prove that Lexical Accent can solve the exceptional stress of English noun more persuasively than any other theory. Chapter 6 is a concluding summary of this thesis.

ABSTRACT Opacity and Optimality Theory with Candidate Chains The purpose of this study is to analyze individual language's opacity from a different standpoint, which is based on Optimality Theory with Candidate Chains (OT-CC, McCarthy 2006a-d, 2007), a novel version of classic Optimality Theory (OT, Prince & Smolensky 1993, 2004). In terms of Chomsky & Halle (1968)'s rule-based theory (SPE), opacity can be found in two cases: overapplication and underapplication. The former refers to the case where a process applies even though its context is not present at the surface. Contrary to the former, the latter refers to the case where a process does not apply even though its context is present at the surface. Opacity has been a challenge to OT since it is an output-oriented theory. To handle opacity, many other theories such as Local Conjunction (Smolensky 1993, 1995; Kirchner 1996; Kager 1999; ?ubowicz 2005), OO-correspondence (Benua 1995; Kager 1995; McCarthy 1996), Lexical Constraint Domains (It? & Mester 1995a-b), Two-level Well-formedness (Orgun 1995; Archangeli & Suzuki 1997; Cho 2001), Multi-stratal Evaluation (It? & Mester 1999), Lexical Accent (Hammond 1999), and Sympathy Theory (McCarthy 1999, 2002), have been proposed. According to Kager (1999), McCarthy (2007), Seo & Jo (2006, 2008a-d), and Jo & Seo (2009a-b), however, there are also many problems in them. In this study to resolve the problems in SPE and constraint-based theories, I try to resolve opacity by employing the new account of OT-CC. Based on OT-CC, this study investigates and analyzes opacity, supporting the superiority of OT-CC. According to McCarthy (2007: 3-4), OT-CC is a synthesis of OT with derivations: OT-CC includes not only a surface form but also a series of intermediate forms, each of which is minimally different from the form that immediately precedes it. And Like OT, OT-CC is a constraint-based theory, in which ranked constraints evaluate a set of candidate outputs. The main difference from OT is in the nature of the candidates. Candidates in OT are individual forms. OT-CC, however, records the history of faithfulness violation in forming a valid candidate chain. The winning candidate chain is evaluated according to three well-formedness conditions: initial form, gradualness, and local optimality (harmonic improvement+best violation). Here candidate chain employs PREC(edence) constraints(A, B)(PREC(A, B)) in order to record the history of faithfulness violation. PREC(A, B) requires that every B-violating Localized Unfaithful Mapping (LUM) proceed and be not followed by A-violating LUM in the reduced LUM Sequence (rLUMSeq). If the order of faithfulness constraint violation is reversed or violation of constraint A is skipped, the candidate chain under question gets violation marks. This study is organized as follows: Chapter 1 provides an introductory remark about this study. In Chapter 2, I outline the concept of transparency and opacity while exemplifying individual language's data. In Chapter 3, I introduce OT and OT-CC. And after comparing OT-CC with SPE and OT, I consider the common properties and variances of the theories. In Chapter 4, I analyze individual language's opacity in the frameworks of SPE, OT, Local Conjunction, OO-correspondence, Lexical Constraint Domains, Two-level Well-formedness, Multi-stratal Evaluation, Lexical Accent, and Sympathy Theory. And then I point out the problems of the above theories. Chapter 5 is the applying part of OT-CC. In this chapter, I try to resolve individual language's opacity by utilizing OT-CC. By doing so, I prove that OT-CC can solve opacity more persuasively than any other theories. In Chapter 6, after examining English noun stress which shows opacity in the word-final tense vowels and analyzing the opacity in the frameworks of SPE and OT, I point out the problems of the theories. To resolve the problems, I apply the opacity to OT-CC. By doing so, I show OT-CC's firm explanation. Chapter 7 summarizes this study.

For decades, the term of phonological variations has drawn the attention of researchers, and the relationship between phonological variations and sociolinguistic variations was mostly examined. This research focuses on the phonological variations in English, an increasingly prominent field within sociolinguistic research. The present study investigates English pronunciation, using fifty Chinese students in Chosun University. The study reveals that the English speech of majority of the students manifests Chinese English pronunciation in both segmental and supra-segmental levels. What is more, a relationship does exist between the phonological variations of /r/, /θ/ and pitch variation and sociolinguistic variables of gender, age, geography and English learning experience of the students in the study. The study aims to reveal the features of their English pronunciation and explore the relationship between phonological variations and sociolinguistic variations.

In this thesis, I will be looking at the proposals that have been offered by Lees(1960), Chomsky(1970), Allen(1978), Selkirk(1982), and Fabb(1984) to account for English compound. They have attempted to analyse English compound. However, there are also problems in their arguments. The aim of this thesis is to investigate English compound based on the lexical and syntactic perspective. In this thesis to solve the problems in their arguments above, I will analyse English compound from the angle of the lexical and syntactic perspective. By doing so, I will reveal that the lexical and syntactic perspective can explain English compound more persuasively than any other analysis. This thesis is organized as follows: In chapter 1, I provide an introductory remark about this thesis. In chapter 2, I examine English compound. In chapter 3, I point out the problems of the analysis of English compound based on the lexical perspective, which was offered by Chomsky(1970), Allen(1978), and Selkirk(1982). In chapter 4, I point out the problems of the analysis of English compound based on the syntactic perspective, which was offered by Lees(1960) and Fabb(1984). Chapter 5 is the main part of this thesis. Here I will attempt to analyse English compound from the angle of the lexical and syntactic perspective. So, I will expose that the lexical and syntactic perspective can explain English compound more persuasively than the former analysis. Chapter 6 is a concluding summary of this thesis.
